OK folks. My ESM P-39 is together (a looker, I'll get some pictures on soon, she's been cristened ''Public Relations''), the engine is tweaked (DLE-30, runs like a dream), it's been fully balanced, shaken down and adjusted. Ground handling is very nice. Any words to the wise on this girl for her maiden flight? I do hate surprises, does she have any?
Great! What was your all up weight without fuel? Good info from Carosel, I always do that with my new models, I learned from 1/1 that if she stalls with the stick absolutely straight back, no aileron and only rudder input to hold the nose straight you should not drop a wing at break. Idle power here or nearest zero thrust. It it drops a wing at stall, you are out of rig, warped wing etc. The fix in R/C is to put in rudder trim until she breaks as straight ahead as possible without dripping a wing. Again, ailerons must be held neutral. You get a chance to check for unequel flap deployment her also. Congrats! Mine has been on the becch for al while, I'm finishing a Cub on floats. wallace.tharp

Haven't weighed her yet but for her size she seems light (guess about 15 to 16lb.). With the DLE-30 up front the only balance adjustment I needed was to shift the batteries forward.

Very smart plano! i would however suggest you check your weight/cg because mine is 18lbs and very nose heavy. Ieven have my servos in the tail and its still nose heavy. I doubt my Laser 240 weighs much more than your DLE30.

Well, I could be off on the weight by a few pounds.

For those that have flown this bird, I've left mine a touch nose heavy to start using the CG from the manual. How good a starting point is the manual anyway?

The manual is rite on and yes do leave it a little nose heavy for your first flights I did the same with mine and found that it fly's very nice and very predictable .
Cheers.

I found the c/g suggestion for my esm La7 was correct. Ihave heard others say its wildly out but i have never had issues. Regarding c/g testing though i always test with gear up and fuel tank empty. As the nose leg retracts backwards and the tank will never be empty this gives a 'worst case' c/g and i balance at this point. Then with a load of fuel on board and the gear down the model must be nose heavy, especially on takeoff. Yet by the time landing comes round the fuel is mostly gone and i am only slightly nose heavy

Hey, any of you fellow elecric guys get an all up weight yet with two 5 or 6S batteries? I'll get back on my P-39 soon, just in time for some great Arizona weather. Today it's windy and in the 50s. Still can't complain, been flying most every weekend. It's the Buckeye, AZ Air Fair this Sat. I'm the MC for the R/C part. We have a really big time guy flying an R/C jet. Should be fun

Trying to decide weather to get the ESM Aircobra or the TP FW-190. Want a large electric scale prop plane.

Well, we finally had a warm (70) degree day with almost no wind yesterday. Snuck out to the field and was able to maiden my new ESM P-39 "Public Relations". Everything worked just fine, however, need to swap out the nose gear servo with something with a higher torque, other than that she was a doll. First 2 flights on the brand new DLE-30 so expect a little more performance as we tweak it.

Impressive looking lady on the ground and in the air.

Yea, we need pix, congrats, how many oz of torque was the servo for the nose that was not enough? I am still procrastinating on my partially assembled Ty's cockpit. Don't seem to be able to just put it in there. Probably should finish all my electric and control stuff first anyway. wallace.tharp

With all the complication in the nose of my model i must say i ditched the steering nose wheel. I just locked it dead straight and thats the end of it. Our flying site rules say prohibit taxying into and out of the pits anyway and on takeoff/landing i will have rudder authority to keep her straight. Especially if i use the elevator to lift the nose a little just to unload the wheel. I have done this before with great success.

a castering front nose wheel would also be an option and has been used many times...ive even done it on a smaller cobra.

The full size P39 has a free castoring nose wheel and it was my first choice. Sadly the nose leg on my model refused to free castor as the bearing was not smooth enough. So, some loctite had it sorted! if i find i need a steerable nose wheel then a blow lamp will make short work of the loctite and i can retrofit it.

Hi Mr Ruff how are you doing it was great to see you at the OEOFlast weekend and congratulations on the recognition with your 337.

For your field Iwould suggest the P-39 better for those windy cross wind landings with as the 39 is a trike :-) If you do decide to go with the P-39 you will need to consider the gear, my suggestion is the Seirra Gear. Also you will want to consider a battery hatch. Let us know what you settle on. In all honesty Idon't think you can go wrong with either one.

I have been able to get back to mine, I have successfully electrified the Seirra nose Gear and its installed, I have just about got the spinner centered will post some pics soon. Ihave also made some modifications to the rudder in an attempt to up scale it. I will post some pictures of the gear and rudder soon.

Cheers

Thanks Chad I will talk to you soon.

I have just about completed the instrument panel, I made a some additions to the panal from Ty's Planes. The additions included some assorted nuts and bolts and some instruments from Propagateam that I got from IflyTallies, and from Chad. The next step with the panel is to install the guns and then get it into the plane. Ialso did some modifications to the rudder, I did not like the angular cuts along the hinge line so I rounded it off by adding some extra balsa then sanding it to shape. It took me two attempts, the first time I did not take into account the varing geometry of ESM's angles, they move further aft of the hingeline as the rudder thicken towards the bottom. The other modification I made was to add the hinge mount that was missing, right now its roughed in and once squared up I will add some trim along the edges to finish it. Ialso included some shots of the spinner from Troy Built its expensive but looks pretty good. I hope you enjoy the pictures

What set up did you use to electrify your Sierra gear? My P-39 is next on the bench and I have the sierra gear also.

Hi Wayne

I used a Lado 666 Actuator, modified mount, a local hobby shop has a CNCmachine and for a nominal fee he created a new mount, that allows the Lado to fit in. The harder part is the T bar. That is a Lado part that Gus at Magnum RChad and was gracious enough to let me have it. It is essentially a sleave or tube where the inside is threaded to 6-32 and threads on to the actuator, this way its moves it back and forth depending on the direction. Then all you have to do is make a new T-Bar to fit the end of the sleave and fits into the Seirra Gear. Now what it interesting is that you cannot use the Lado actuator for the mains, there is simply not enough room. For them I used the Wingspan mini actuators. That will be a topic of an upcomming post. To be honest this is one case where it might be better to go with the pneumatics.

Cheers
