Western Regional Dawn Patrol (Feb. 23)
Wow! I finally got to attend a Dawn Patrol...even if it was just as a spectator. Today, Saturday Feb. 23, the Blackstar Canyon OCMA field hosted this Dawn Patrol event in southern California and got quite a respectable turn-out. Certainly there were more WWI models than I've ever personally seen in one place before!
Anyway, if you were there...and if you have photos please post them here. I'll post a couple in a few minutes. I just had a point-and-shoot so no in-flight photos.

No, I left my DSLR with the telephoto lens at home (in Japan). I was hoping that someone else would post some photos. It really was a nice event and the weather was California Perfect. The organizers said that they hoped the event would grow each year until it became a sort of "West Coast Rhinebeck." They're hoping to have a grass strip ready by next year...in addition to the current "composite" strip.
Seems like almost all of the big Dawn Patrols take place in the midwest...with a few more in the south. But this event proved that there is no shortage of skilled WWI modelers or just plain friendly folk out here in California.

Yes, it was a perfect day, and a beautiful field to fly off of. We arrived late, and I got one flight in with my blue DR1, and had a few problems with my Gee Bee Z and did not get them sorted out in time for a flight. [] You took pics of the tripe and the Z, which is setting next to my friend Mel Santmeyers 1/4 scale D7 in your pictures. I actually fired the Z up and pulled out onto the runway, but the rudder was not responding correctly. I had to pull back into the pits and figure out what was wrong.[&o]

Do you know what caused the wings to come off. I'm building the same plane(1/3 busa pup) and wondering if i should pay more attention to the wing wires making sure the crimps don't slip.

We're pretty sure that a wing wire failed, gotta make sure they all are secure and strong. Only thing that holds the wings on!

Duane, thanks so much for posting the link to that video! And I know exactly who was shooting it! Funny how we all sort of know who was who without recognizing anyone!!! It was great to see all the flying video...but yeah it's always hard to watch a large model go in.
The crash must have happened just as I was pulling into the parking lot because I noticed the yellow Gypsy in the air.

It's lucky that big Pup went splat right in the middle of the strip instead of right into the crowd not 10 yards away. [X(]

Right O! Whats that saying? "God watches out for fools and Englishmen" Well, we're not English! These big models fly so gracefully and easily, we tend to forget that 41lbs out of control is extremely dangerous.

The second video is a total heart breaker! I guess that is the nature of the hobby.
If you think about it that was probably a pretty realist crash. I'm sure more than one pilot lost his life in the same way in the Great War. The pilots of that era had a lot of guts to climb into those crates. May God bless them!

Anyone know the builder of the Nieuport 27 (framed up fuselage)? I've always liked the 27 and you sure don't see them very often.
