RE: Sig Ryan STA
Everything looks great! However.....I only have one question. You went though a lot of effort to paint the panel lines on this bird, but I can't really see them in the photos. So is it that the pictures just don't show that much detail or did they kind of disappear when you painted that red over them? The rivets are fantastic, but I can't seem to make out the panel lines. Is it just the pics, or are you happy with how much they show up in person? Just wondering.

Vin,
The build is coming out great. Looks like your in the home stretch. Use strong servos and your gaps won't be a problem. Blenderderm will work.. But it leaves nasty residue when using it with glow.. Gas prolly won't matter much. I bought a case 12rolls of it on the 3m web site.. Shipped for under 20 usd. LHS gets 4 to 5 per roll.. Just sayin.....
Any way... Keep building my home room friend ! Season is almost here

I looked for one of these for quite a while, but no chance down here in Oz. Finally Black Horse brought out their 2 ARfs - big one is 92" ! I got one as soon as I could !. Fitted a Moki 180, inverted, head at ~ 7 o'clock mark, muffler outlets point stright out the bottom of the cowl, and apart from those outlets, I have not cut ANY extra holes in the cowl. It needs a starter to catch inverted, but once its going its fine. And what a beautiful flier! It has working flaps, but I have done some of my absolute best landings with this plane, without any flaps.
Just glorious in the air, and on the ground.

David, the panel lines are visable but they are very close to the rivets so your eye dosen't pick up on it right away. If I had to do it again I think I would made them a little more visable by going two tapes thick instead of one. The epoxy paint did pretty well in not hiding the details that I put in. The panel lines on the cowlare definitley more noticeable due to the lack of rivets...
Dan while the fuselage is nearing completion I still have a fair amount of work to do on my wing!
JP, sounds like you have a winner there. Nothing sounds like a Moki running... Post a photo of your new bird.

David I took a close-up that hopefully shows the panel lines that we spoke of. As you can see they are visable...
This morning I spent some time making up the tank. I'm using a 10 ounce Sullivan slant styletank (#440) with a upgraded aluminum fuel tank stopper assembly alsomade by Sullivan (#478). Brass lines were bent and I soldered 1/8" fuel line barbs (Du-Bro #813) to each respective end. The tank was secured to a removable birch plytank tray with a strap. Foam rubber was added under the tank to minimuze fuel foaming. The entire tray is slid into place and held into position with two screws that make the tank easily servicable should it need to be removed.
Note: Fuel tray and surrounding areas were fuel proofed.

VJ,
The finish on your plane is superb. I hope I can achieve the same results.
I did get a nice surprise today, see my Waco thread.
Later!!

Thanks Robert, but don't short change yourself. You are a very capable and talented builder as well, I've seen your models...
Anthony , just take your time and concentrate on what's under the paint. When you see how well this paint flows from your gun you will want to use it all the time...
Handyman220, I agree with you! I fitted my Ryan with the same cowl however I did use the stock wheel pants.

Very, very nice indeed. You have done an excellent job VJand I want to thank you again for taking time to document all the work. I sure hope Ican see it in person someday. Even if I don't build another one I am inspired to really fix mine up and make it better.A while back I purchased some elastic strapping made from neoprene like the stuff they use for leg braces and such from a guy that makes them and it works great for holding batteries, or fuel tanks you just use a small piece of velcro to stick it to its self.Looking forward to the wing and final completion. 20 days till springno pressure or anything

Thanks for the photo Vincent, the panel lines show up much better with that light direction. I was wondering about the 2 tape thickness thing myself, but it looks great......thanks again for taking the effort to show the process of this build, your doing a fantastic job...I may have to go the extra mile on my build of the Spacewalker next fall ! ! !

Gee VJ, you make me feel so inferior! Compared to this build, my Cub looks like a piece of..... Well, let's just say I'd have a looooong way to go to get your results.
And speaking of spring, it's already here! It's suppose to be 80 degrees tomorrow and the blossoms are in full force. I don't plan on getting much done this weekend because I'll be riding in our Reedley Lions Club Blossom Bike Ride. That'll probably do me in for the rest of the week, cause I'm not in shape.
Anyway, looking forward to more photos!

Thanks David! Take care of that collar bone.... Keep at it David, experience comes in good time, your doing great!
I spent stupid hours masking off the rudder and fin for the white accent. What a PITA.... After all that time taping I had it sprayed in about three minutes. I think it will look good when I put onthe black pinstriping tape.
Sorry no pic, 500 Message

RE: Sig Ryan STA
Just curious, but did any of the red bleed through into the white making it an "off-white"??? Red is such a strong color with a lot of pigment... thought you might spray the white before the red. As an FYI, PPG makes an excellent Degreaser called DX 330. Used properly, it removes fingerprint oils, etc. Have had excellent luck with it.

RE: Sig Ryan STA
What up-down aileron deflections are SIG kit owners using. The manual doesn't specify (that I can find) and the SIG information sheet posted a while ago says 1/4" up/down. With the kit bellcrank assembly that's about the most I can get, but I wanted to see if that was truely enough.
Thanks for your help.

With that said, I'll try the product on my 1/4 scale STA. Has to be good although the only 2-part paint I have ever used was IMRON (different application). Thanks VJ

Jaybird on my Sig I set up the throws per Sigs recommendations as my high and middle and took the difference between those two and added to the low. I have three rates. As of date the low and middle(middle is Sigs low) is more than sufficient. I only use the high when doing some 3D, yes the cub will do mild 3D.

Update on my progress: All of the white trim has been sprayed to the fuse and cowl. Tonight I will finish upthe pinstriping. The pull-pull system has been sorted out and works great. I am looking forward to installing the engine! Will post some photos as soon as I can...

VJ, you can open an account on photobucket and then post them from there, it's free and you can evene edit and add text to them. I just opened one because of the issues here.
