still confused about dle-55 fuel mix
I have searched and read everything I can find and am still confused,, I have 4 dle-55 engines and I am currently running them all on a 32:1 mix of premium fuel and penzoil aircooled 2 stroke oil.
I broke them in on this mix and am still running it, but they are all broke in now. all of them run great, but I have oil residue on all of my planes, I am wondering if I should change but have some questions, I have read that I can run amsoil saber 100:1 oil mixed at an 80:1 ration in my engines and that would be just fine, I have also read that I can run a 50:1 mix Of REDLINE? or royal purple 2cycle oil,
I also read alot of complaints about the amsoil, I always thought it was supposed to be a good oil, are these just peoples opinions, or is it just not good for these engines,,, I want to run something that will be the best for my engine, both for performance and longevity, So I am asking what is the best route to take, I have so much money in these I want them to last, I can tell you this, On the 32:1 mix I am running, Looking at my piston it is blacker than the ace of spades..
Thanks fellas

RE: still confused about dle-55 fuel mix
Ronnie, I run all my gassers including a DLE 55 on 50:1 Penzoil after a break in of 1 gallon at 40:1. My DA 150's had hundreds of flights without any excessive carbon build up. Gas is usually Shell 89 octane. 32:1 getting carboned up may be a sign of being either rich or lean enough to burn the oil rather then passing it through the engine. You state that you have residue on the airplane so I am going to think you are rich. You may want to try going to 50:1. To get the correct high speed needle setting I usually lean down until I notice a sag on an extended vertical and then open it up just until it goes away.

I would not run any of our engines at leaner than 1:50 mixes.
I even think I remember reading that DLE wants you to use 3% oil. ( 1:33) Go by the engine manual, and use a good oil that will allow the required oil mix. Amsoil will not!
Motul800 will
Stihl HPultra will
Mobil1-2T will
Redline racing will
None of these oils are cheap.

KLOTZ !!
Have been using it for years in snowmobiles, weed whackers, snow throwers, etc, etc.
Klotz now produces oil for RC engines and can be purchased thru Tower Hobbies, or I am sure thru your favorite hobby shop.
Perfect for 32:1 thru 50:1 ratios.
Personally we all have our own favorites, but as I stated, personally I would use nothing but KLOTZ.

I run all my new engines... DLE DA 3W SE with Pennzoil Air cooled 40:1 for about two gallons. Then I switch to Amzoil Sabre 100:1 but mix it 80:1. One of my DA100's is on it's 7th year without touching it. I also have a DLE55 coming up on its 5th year without touching it either. Gas is 87 octane unleaded. You'll get so many opinions. Once you make a decision stick with it and believe in it. I did and it's working for me.

I have run both my DA engines and my DLE engines on Amsoil Saber 100 mixed at a 50:1 ratio with no oiling of the fuselage and absolutely flawless engine performance with little carbon buildup in the engines. I usually ran the chep gas but did switch to super with a slight increase in performance.
Best of luck making your choice!

Pe, you seem to be following this thread. Have you had any experience with Lucas Oil semi synthetic? It is readily available where I live. Maybe not in Europe, though. I haven't read too much about it on the forums, one way or another. Not like the Amsoil debate, ha, ha. I have burned several gallons through a couple of different engines and it seems to be fairly clean, and the engines run cool at 32-1. The only other oil I have used is Pennz at 32-1. I have seen some DLEs and other more prestigious brands have bearing problems and usually they have been run on one of the 100-1 "miracle" oils.

It probably is a good mineral base stock oil with Poly-Butene added to guard against exhaust blocking, hence semi-synthetic.
I would rather see a technical data sheet. In our engines we do not want to have low-viscosity oils due to our lack of good engine cooling. (fins are too small, user abuse as well)

Ive been using Echo 50:1 mix in all my 2 strokes.
I've recently added Duralube upper cylinder lubricant to the gas also and notice an improvement in RPM and cold starting.
When I mean cold starting ....Im talking below freezing. I use it in my snow removal equipment. They sit in the back of the truck all night and have to start when we need them. So far so good, havent noticed any ill effects.
Just MTC.

I run the same Redline 50:1 mix for new and well broken in gassers. I've seen plenty of guys run Redline at 100:1 ratio after break in.
I own about 20 gassers and run them this way for years without any carbon or overheat problems.
It's more critical to set your mixture needles correctly than choosing a good oil.
Just choose your favorite oil and keep things simple.
I like Redline because of its great reputation, easy to get from Auto supply shop, and it's the same brand my auto shop uses on my Mercedes for many years.
Heck, if it's good enough for cars costing 6 figures, it's got to be good enough for engines that cost 3 figures right?

Did you break in the 55 with " Dino" oil or use synthetic?

My DLE 55 runs very well on 32 to 1 Stihl Ultra systhetic. Have nearly ten gallons thru it and it runs great. Just my 2 cents!!

Hey- that's for 4-strokes.
Running 1: 40 would probably give you the same benefits without the risk of using incompatible additives.

RE: still confused about dle-55 fuel mix
I have dle 55 just breaking it in. On start up it pops then start and then it stop and wont fire until it has set a minute. does this sound like it is flooding? After it has sat a minute it fires and I can fly it, if I refuel it and try to start it it wont fire until it has set again. Do I need to replace the plug with a hotter burning plug? If so which one.
