Default What fuel for Norvel .15

I have a Norvel .15 and wanted to know what type of fuel I can run in it. Its going to be used for sport flying. Any information would be great. Thanks Ken

I use 10% Nitro and 20% all castor, I think castor works well with their ceramic technology. If you have the RC engine it is very well behaved and it will idle extremely well on the stock carb. The stock carb has a similar bore size as most other .15 engines by the spraybar is much larger, hence the good fuel draw and stable idle. It does limit the high end a little so if you wan't a little more power you can put in another .15 carb (the MVVS .12-.15) is a direct drop-in.

Yes it is the R/C version. I run 15% in most of my stuff. I believe the brand is Omega but can't confirm till I'm home. Thanks for the info..

You didn't say if it is the Big Mig or the AME version. The big Mig is plain bearing and is more suited for sport flying. The BB AME is a bit more powerful and may not idle quite as low. IMHO both are excellent engines.

Its the BIG MIG version. I got the motor new from a friend for cheap money. How does it rate against the Magnum .15?

If you use an another carb (e.g. an MVVS one) with a similar intake area as the .15XLS, it will easily out rev it. On an APC 8x4 prop the .15XLS will do around 15000rpm while the Norvel will do about 15600rpm.

I tested a bunch of .15 motors over the winter and posted them on the "tachometer readings" section if you scroll down a bit. I did all of the motors on the same 7" 5" Master Airscrew prop.(my fave)and 10% fuel. The Big Mig , Magnum (ASP) and AME are in there with a bunch of others. The Norvel really picks up with a bigger bore carb. I used a c/l carb that I made and it really woke up. I tested them all without a muffler because some wouldn't fit on the test stand, and it was more even. Iopened up the baffles on the mufflers of the Norvels because I read somewhere that was needed.

There is some discussion about engines mods here; [link=http://www.rcuniverse.com/forum/m_9450797/mpage_1/key_/tm.htm]Norvel .15[/link]
The largest improvement for me came from replacing the carb to a less restrictive one, the MVVS carbs should be available from here; [link=http://www.clubtamaran.com/parramotorING.htm]Parra engines[/link]

Since you intend to use it in a sport model I would suggest using it as-is and have fun. You have suggestions if you need more power.
