I am looking for a suggestion for a kit for my os 10fp that needs a home.

I like the lines of the Mach None and Birdie 10, but there do not seem to be any kits to be had at a reasonable price.

Any ideas appreciated!

The herr star cruiser and cloud ranger are good ones. They don't advertise the use of that engine but are good ones for it. The laser cutting is very good on those models as well.

I love the OS .10, I really do. She taught me how to fly, how to tune an engine without a single complaint on her part. But, the old girl packs a few pounds and doesn't shake the fat all that well if I am to take off my 20 some-odd year old rose colored glasses.

I find that taking an existing 1/2A design and scaling it up about 1/8 makes it about right for the 10FP. Most 1/2A's won't balance with a 10FP on it and pitch speed wise, the .10 isn't likely any better than a hot 1/2A, just quieter and better to tune.

I love that engine. I flew one for years on a
Warlock by Airtronics. It would do control line
style stunts at shoulder altitude and never a
hint of a stutter. Master Airscrew 7 X 4 and
15% fuel with some castor.

I know this doesn't answer your question, but to enjoy engines of this size nowadays it really helps if you get used to scratch-building. Small planes are really easy to build from scratch and there are tons of simple but good designs. It's really not hard to do, especially in this size.

Then you can build one of those great old Randy Randolph designs, like Chips (MAN), or Nacho (FM) and have a ball.

I like that engine too. Really nice quiet sound, good throttle, decent power, fool proof. Probably should have some castor in the fuel.

In the last year I have picked up two Mach None kits from the classifieds for around $40 each. They pop up now and then, in the last year several sold for $40-$65 in the classifieds of another RC forum. Admittedly, you have to keep checking in to find them.

I thought the Mach none was a bit small for a .10...I remember it as being .049 or so...Anybody care to chime in?

I recall that Aubrey Kochman, who designed the similar Pacer, thought it was very important to use a lightweight engine, namely the Cox TD 049 since there was nothing else at the time. Hanging an extra 3 or 4 ozs on the nose would definitely require modification, plus how do you cram at least a 2 oz fuel tank into that skinny fuselage? Especially after you've shortened the nose to get it to balance?

I'll say it once more...scratch building is what gives you good options in this size. Then you can have the right combination of plane and engine instead of trying to hack up a kit that was never intended for it.

The Birdie 10, of course, would be fine. They are scarce, but you can probably find one if you make the effort and have patience. The Herr Pitts is probably fine too. There's not much if you must have a kit.

Even in the "heyday" there were not many .10 kits. The Kyosho Spree Sports 10
was a notable exception and an ARF to boot.

The Pacer was by Owen Kampen, but Aubry Kochman did lots of nice smaller
planes as well. I just bought a Pacer kit off of e-bay a couple of days ago.

A Honker Bipe would be another good one, and super easy to build.

A future project of mine is to build a MachNone short kit that has laid around here for 20 years and outfit it with a ASP.12
I'm pretty sure the .12 is the same size as my OS.10
The MachNone's foam wing is too CHUNKY to be fast with only .100 - .200 of a HP, so basically this short kit has a great looking canopy and a drawing of a very pretty plane that I'll be able to use in the project....but that's about it.

I put a OS .10 on a sig Rascal..it was the 3 channel .061 size arf,,I put the .10 on it because I was gonna put floats on the plane for a buddy to fly off his pond...flew fine, but unfortunatly it landed much faster and needed more space to come in than I had..not too bad damage...but thats about the time I gave up flying a few years back...I may fix it up and try it again...Rog

The OS .10 is fine for 1/2 A kits .Most were designed
for heavier equipment than we have now and the added
inch of prop diameter sure helps. Don't speculate on the
outcome if you have not tried it .

You're right, it is 1/2A. I know Baby Birdies have been flown with .10-.11 engines, I have one half built in stasis so can't comment first hand how well the larger engine works out. But it seems plenty big enough to me. The Hayes 2 and 3 oz rectangular tanks sometimes come in handy in tight spaces.

There's an Ace All-Star kit on fleabay right now, although that is not exactly along the lines of a Pacer/Birdie/Mach None type of design.

Where's the canopy??

I don't see why any of those ACE wing aircraft wouldn't be absolutely fine with .09-.10 engines. Same for the built up wing brethren mentioned, they're all similar. I flew a Simple 400 with a 400W electric package (Yeah, I know, forgive me.. I needed a lekkie park flyer for out back of the house and it was too ugly for glow) weighing in at 80g motor + 185g battery + ESC = about 300g or about 11oz for the power package. Wing loading was fine, glide was decent enough to land in a small ball diamond.
