History of the Blue Max
Although it may sound incongruous Germanys highest military medal award during WW1 was decidingly French sounding Pour le Merite(also known as the Blue Max). The award dates back to 1667 created by Frederick William 1.Given that French was the language of the royal court the naming of the award would have appeared a natural choice.Until 1810 the award was awarded to civilians in addition to military personnel.Curiously receipt of the award need not only be a once only honour. Some recipients were given the medal 2 or 3 seperate times.During WW1 the award gained its greatest fame.In the aerial war a fighter pilot was initially entitled the award upon downing 8 enemy aircraft. The qualifying total was revised to 16.Although the Red Baron readily qualified for the award however he was never awarded the Blue Max award. The last surviving recipient of the Pour le Merite Ernst Junger died in 1998.

So the thing he has around his neck was a fake? or perhaps not his?
In January 1917, after his 16th confirmed kill, Richthofen received the Pour le Mérite.

I hereby award corvette65 a 'blue max' but he (she) has to buy it him (her) self. They (copies) can be obtained from Historic Aviation booksellers. If he (she) can't find one of those ( the 'medal' or the movie) then he (she) can buy a 'red max' which is a rocket. But... he'll (she'll) have to build and fly it himself (herself?) unless someone wants to do it in his (her) stead. However, crvette65 must hold harmless any person who does this but must be accountable for any damages sustained during or after the rocket flight to nowhere which is where this thread started and is going really fast! lol
