Getting back to work on my LT40, I got the wing covered. It's sort of boring in olive drab though.

Gary, that's a great color... I really like that alot. It will look awesome with a stark white outline. Some kind of 1960's Army style look or something. Very cool. The texture on the solartex makes it even more "vintage" looking.

I think outlining all the leading edges in white will look great (kinda like Sig's Senior Kadet scheme), and it will definitely make it pop visually when flying. Maybe a white belly. Maybe a white cowl. Maybe a big white start on both sides of the rear fuselage for a "Vintage Army" look. You could even put a fake BuNo on the wings or something, lol. I suggest to get some paper and colored pencils and make some quick sketches of different angles to see what you like. That's what I do.

Another "theme" could be the D-day stripes. That would look pretty cool, too. But outlining the leading edges just makes the planes so easy to see in the sky.

Protractor, compass, and ruler, my friend. lol. You can do it. Just be patient and redo as many times as you have to until you get it how you want it. Who cares if it's not perfect either. It's all handcrafted stuff anyways. : )

For long straight lines, it's best to use a taut string or something as a guide, and a meter stick to draw your long lines. Use cups or bowls or protractors/compasses to help draw your curves. Then the only irregularities will be your scissor skilz.

For smaller designs and joining curves, I use stock or construction paper to make templates and I'll keep holding it against the location on the plane, trimming a bit, holding it again, trimming a bit, etc. until it fits right. That way when I get it how I want it, I just trace that shape onto the covering film and do one cut, and apply it.

Nice looking schemes are so worth it I think. They take time, and sometimes people rush it to get it in the air, but when it's done, I find that I'm way happier with it than when I stick with a bland scheme.

I've built two LT-40s and one Seniorita, modified for ailerons and taildragger. Now looking for a Senior kit for floats. I also purchased a Seniorita ARF but had to build a new fuse after an unscheduled landing. One LT-40 was electric , powered by an Astroflight 25G and then Mega brushless motor and gearbox with as many as 20 nImh cells. Both Ritas are powered by Scorpion outrunners.
So I definitely want to build a Senior, modified of course with ailerons, maybe flaps...I dunno if it really needs 'em, but with float flying in mind. Of course another LT-40 would be nice too.

It's positively AMAZING, what can be put in the back of a van. I went through the angelfire website - had no idea a Kadet could go through so much "modifications" and still fly. Yeah, like that twin-boom version - - ALOT!!

Count me in I have a Kadet MK2 I built 20 years ago as a teenager and a señorita currently being electrified and recovered with silk.  It had such a horrible color scheme, I don't know what I was thinking back then.

I went through that angelfire page and really liked that twin engined version (mounted on the wings).. I bet that would make an excellent twin trainer. I wonder what other mods would be required to make that work? Enlarge the rudder?

I'd think increasing the size of the rudder and elevator both due to increased air flow over the wing behind the prop arc would be helpful. Even with a few degrees of downthrust, the plane would probably still want to climb with any increase of throttle

Could just be me, but I think this brotherhood was a success. Nice job Gary. I think my old '78 era kit will be on the building bench soon...........and I will be picking up a pair of floats for it too. Motivation comes in many forms, but this has been wonderful............

i think that was about the clearest explanation i've ever read about how to choose anything. so far i've just been (winging it) gleaning info here and there and wound up buying some stuff that will, according to your fine tutelage, probably work! all except the props. haven't bought those yet but 14/7 sounds ok if i can clear it when the tail comes up. might reduce the downthrust a bit per this thread but want to keep some being a trainer and all.

My first plane was a Kadet LT-40, It has had 3 major rebuilds and is in a bag awaiting #4
I have also had 2 Kadet Seniors (One red, one blue) and have a third one that was given to me in pieces awaiting resurection.
My son's LT-40 is hanging in my hanger and needs a power plant and receiver to get airborne again. (He got into SCUBA in a big way.)

I love taking a Kadet up on a windy day, throttling back, pulling some up elevator and flying it backwards to the puzzlement of the unintiated!

No problem. I hope that info can help anybody who looks up that sort of info, lol.

As for the downthrust, I kept about 1-2 degrees or so... it needs a MINIMUM amount of downthrust to couple with the side-thrust. Part of the reason for the downthrust (among a few other reasons) is to work in conjunction with the right-thrust to "pull" the plane into a right roll, which counteracts the torque of the propellor spinning the same direction... which can cause the plane to roll left. So right thrust needs SOME down-thrust to acheive this facet of flight stability. The rest of the down-thrust is related to the type of frame the plane has, the amount of lift (limits the thrust/lift ratio), and the whole "trainer" aspect of it all. A few people on here have covered it very well I think, if you weren't already completely familiar with the physics.

This kadet is my first trainer of this size, but I'm having a ball with it. I've been flying some pretty serious 3D planes, and it's only recently that I decided to "chill" a bit and get one of these beasts. I'm lovin' it! I would say that an Easy-Star type plane, and a 78" Kadet are two must-haves for any RC fleet....

HOWEVER... I'm looking at that giant Rascal 110... I think I may pick one up this summer. That thing is pretty impressive!

Your analysis of down thrust associated with right thrust to create a rolling motion counteracting the propeller acting to roll the model is interesting.

I conclude that a pitch down force and a right yaw force creates a rolling torque.

That is the interesting part of that theory.

yeah, that "forced roll" from coupling down/side thrust is important for 3D performance planes; they almost always have it. Not sure it matters as much with the trainer-type planes. Some folks on here could probably answer that better from their experiences.
