A mid range 540, 5000kv or so. Or a mild 550 at 3000-4000kv

What is the difference in the 540-550?  I don't know what those mean

They actually refer to the length of the motor. The longer a motor is, logically (but not always), the longer the rotor and stator are (the internal bits that make a motor 'go'), resulting in more torque.

540s are the kinds of motors that people have been using for years in 1/10th, as brushed or brushless. 550s have also been around for years, but have really become popular since the short course revolution started, and the extra torque is beneficial in most 4WD vehicles, particularly the heavy short course trucks. 550 isn't really needed in lightweight 4wd racing buggies like yours, but some people like the extra power.

For racing, you will probably be restricted to 540s in that car (think of 550s as 'outlaw big blocks' for that racing class). Be aware though, that 540 and 550 as terms are just categories of types of motors, there could be many other differences between models apart from just the length of the can. Also bear in mind that a '4-pole' 540 will be stronger than a 2-pole 550 and a 4-pole 550 will be a very strong motor indeed.

If your track allows 4 pole motors, that's a decent choice.
