Default Topflite Giant P-47D "Tarheel Hal"

Hi, I am ordering the Topflite GS P-47D Thunderbolt "Tarheel Hal" arf. I want to put either a DLE 55 or a DA 60 in it. Do you think these are a good choice? Also I want to get your opinion on servos, I am really familiar with the Hitec 645s. I want to put those in it. Also I am putting the Robart Electric mains for retracts, but they are so expensive and the reason I want to put electric retracts in it is because lots of people have had problems with the air retracts for example, they all of a sudden wont come down. Then I want to get the Futaba super 8 fg transmitter, (I got spektrum) is there any problems with the transmitter, and the receiver that comes with it?? I don't want my plane to crash like spektrum, I have had lots of troubles wi their products. I am also new to arfs, and gasoline engines, is the thing easy to put together? And ow do you mix fuel with oil? Also what about the electronic ignition, what does it do? Lol thanks for your help, I am only 14.

If your interested I have a ZDZ60 with a wrap around muffler so it exits in the rear and will fit in the cowling very well. I would let it go for $450.00 shipping included.

That's very generous, thank you but my heart is set on those 2 engines.

If you change your mind let me know. I do not have it listed yet on here and was going to give you first dibbs. Take a look at the info on the ZDZ60 and I think you will be impressed but DLE are really good engines too, I have several of them.

Put a DA85 in it. That seems to be the norm. Great flying airplane, but with thousands of them out there, the paint scheme is getting boring and I'm from the Tarheel State.

DA 85? Isn't that toooo powerful? I thought the norm for these things are DLE 55, DA 50, or the G62. And there is a Tarheel State? Lol that's awesome, I never got what "Tarheel Hal" was. I love that paint scheme, where I am, the paint scheme is rare. I don't think I would buy one without that paint scheme. Thanks a lot.

14 eh? I remember getting into RC then. I bought a 2 channel galloping ghost radio back then, not knowing how it worked! What kind of experience do you have building/flying? Knowing some of your skills would help in making suggestions. On the face of it the P-47 is a good choice for a first warbird but warbirds are not a good choice in general for a first giant scale project. As fas as air retracts go they are just as reliable as electric and I speak from experience having had both and returning all the electrics I've purchased so far. You have to make sure you maintain themjust like any of your equipment and if they don't hold air overnight then you will have issues with them in the air. Topflite makes very good planes andI have 3 of them now and all of them are very good quality. Engine size is very subjective to how a pilot likes to fly and how heavy you build your plane. The manufacturer makes a suggestion based on their flight testing and what avg pilots skills would be. An overpowered airpplane will get real tricky in a hurry if you aren't experienced, but having the extra power can be helpful on aborted landings and windy days.

Yep, I'm 14. I have been flying since I was 9, I have a P-51, an Extra 300s, and a T-28. I am s really good pilot, and I usually help people to learn to fly sometimes. Thanks for your help.

Either one of those two engines will work fine.

As for the air vs electric. The problem is usually setup. I have rarely have trouble with my air retracts. If either are setup wrong the will give trouble. From what I here from the guys with elec. gear they say there is little difference in the two when you have to buy the accessories for the air.

Hope this helps

OMT, although I'm not the biggest fan of the 645s they will work fine also.

As for the oil mix. There are a hundred opinions on that. I use Pennzoil air cooled. 1 small bottle (about 4ozs) to 1 gallon of gas is 40 to 1. That is a good ratio. Not too much, not to little
Sounds to me like you've already got most of this figured out.

Also if you post In The warbird section I believe you will find more help.

Actually it's 32:1 4/128 but hey close enoughIwould not worry alot about oil and all that stuff now get all your gear together and build a solid no frills airplane the first time around and get some more experience under your belt and then you can play around some more.If you want the best landing gear then Sierra is it, big $ but little problems and very robust.

Ok I checked the oil bottle this morning. It is 3.2ozs. If you mix that with 1gallon of gas it will be 40to1. I couldn't remember the exact amount in the bottle.

I have the MVVS 58cc in mine (set up for air racing) and it hauls very well
An 85cc in my book is a big overkill

Hi Lifer,

For normal flying, I use a 24x8 prop but for racing, I played with 22x12 and 20x16
I did get some very good results out of the 22x12

I'm looking forward to trying a 22x12 on my P-47 with a DLE 55. Thanks for the reply!

Thanks guys. I have never had a gasoline engine so I am kinda new to it all. I'm not sure with mixing and everything but 40:1 sounds good. I can't wait to build it!! And a DLE 55 with a 22  by 12 prop is gonna have a lot of prop rip if ya know what i mean. I saw a guy out with one the other day and it was pretty loud. Anyways thanks y'all again.

I don't want my plane to crash like spektrum, I have had lots of troubles wi their products.
What kind of issues are you having with Spektrum, I've owned several of their radios and have not once ever had an issue with any of them. If you're consistently having problems with their radios then it is likely user error, lack of ability to properly set up or you're lacking in flying skills. It's easier to blaim the product instead of your own errors.

A friend's plane with a Spectrum went down from 2oo feet this weekend. He's a 3-D pilot so it wasn't pilot error. Another guy I know has to re-bind his Spectrum receiver every flight. He also had to send the transmitter in almost immediately after purchase because it wouldn't bind. I know a lot of people have had zero issues with their Spectrums, but the frequency of failures I have seen personally concerns me a lot.

Ya everyone has had lots of troubles with their spektrum receivers and transmitters, that's why I am getting the Futaba super 8fg, I hope it will be a good transmitter, and I am putting those hitec 645mg servos, I hope that my plane doesn't crash haha I love it so much.

apalsson,
I'm just about to maiden my TF P-47with a DLE 55 and I was wondering about using the flaps. Have you been using full flaps on landing or does it land OK without any ?

Thanks,
paul

I drop full flaps and there is little if any noticeable pitching.
If you look at the pictures, it looks like the flaps are only half way down. I suspect this may be the servos not coping. It was a windy day and I was coming in reasonably hot

I use 70 degrees of flap with some down elevator mixed in to prevent stalls. Works well. It needs a lot of power to fly with these settings, about 50 percent.
