I just finished up on the “Nose” repair. It took me a bit closer to 5 hours versus five minutes.

It was good practice work for me. If you did not know that it was crashed it would be hard to tell that it has been crashed. That is not to say that I think it has a killer Monokote job. I know it is not. [X(] But it’ll work just fine for this plane.

I had to splice in a piece on the bottom. The wood was too crunched and some of it was missing. I also found a dent in the top when I was covering. By then it was too late to worry about fixing it[].

The People Eater Flies Again!!!!! As color blind as I am even I could keep track of Mikes Roar. The cooling system on Stu's Roar is outstanding. Now that Rick has the People Eater all repaired I'm sure he will be moving onto a bigger project now that there is balsa dust on the floor of the shop.

Hey Guys;

I apologize for not getting on here sooner, but my building progress has slowed down a bit due to work and family issues...... But I am finishing off the sheeting on the wing, and also rounding off the LE on the wing, and finishing off the fuse in preparation for inserting the wing in. Not much to show in the way of pics at the moment, but I will see what I can do once i get a bit further along.......

Rick - great job in your repair of the purple roar........  glad to hear you've gotten this back to flying condition again......

LD Mike - congrats on your maiden.... glad to hear that it went good........

Tobydogs.... I love the fireworks on your cowl... this one looks just as good as your others did.......

Hope to be able to finish this one off soon so that I can get the maiden done and join the Roar club.....

Mikey

Third battery through the Uproar and first bad landing. Side wind, bounce, curb and tree. Those things make for a bad landing environment. Needless to say, I missed the curb and trees but ended up doing a cartwheel down the asphalt. Pretty tough plane. Broke the fuse in two right in front of the tail section and dinged up the wings a bit. I was upset and forgot to take pics.

Anyway, it is ready to fly again.

Hey Guys;
I managed to get some more work done on my Roar, and its just about ready to cover at this point. I've got the wing inserted, and stab glued on. I still need to decide whether to go electric or nitro with this, and then put the hatch over the fuel tank area once I decide. Then I'll add the additional 2 inch wingtips to make this ready for our funfly in June, add the remaining sheeting on between R1and R2, and then its onto covering. I'm still toying around with a cover scheme, but hoping to have this completed by the end of the month.

But here are some pics of where I'm at so far, and I will say that some of the tips that have been provided throughout this forum has helped me tremendously during this build, especially when it came to the cap strips and waiting until the wing was in place before putting them on. That could have been a nightmare. So thank you all for your help and assistance and I will continue to post my progress as time permits.....

Mikey

I’ve been working on or at least trying to give the purple uproar a little more positive character. All the while making a decent repair of the wing. On top of that finish off the last few scraps of all that old monokote that I sat out to use up when I started building these three uproars.

Sticking with my normal mode of "covering patterns"... I cut out a piece of thick paper (not quite as think as poster board but that would work) and started sketching a shape that was small enough to fit two (a right and left) into the material I had left and big enough to patch the two wing bays without pulling it off the edges when I shrink it down. As you see in the next two pictures I decided to cut a matching whole in the right wing panel to keep it all the same.

I had almost enough big pieces of gold to make a couple of stars. Again, I started with my scales (strait edges) a pencil and some paper and sketched up something I could live with. For the star on the left, I had to scab on a piece for one of the arms. It’s still showing some wrinkles. I still have a little trim to add I think. Once I have all the trim done I’ll shrink everything up one last time.

There are still a couple of pretty rough looking spots in the repair. Open framework and compound curves are just a bit of a pain. If you have repaired an open bay with plastic covering you’ll know what I am talking about. But, it’s all good. If it was intended to be a beauty queen I surely would have built a different airplane entirely. The practice did me good as the right side did do better than the left.

LD Mike,

I appreciate the comment. I think the stars are a nice addition too.

Speaking of repair and rebuild. How did yours work out? Has the Electra Roar been remaidened?

The place we fly had finally dried out enough to use the dirt strip. I flew two batteries through it yesterday and it flew as good as new! I did at least 15 practice landings with no crashing. I think I still need to move the cg back a bit so it will slow down a bit more. It was a good day.

Hey Guys;

I know its been a few weeks, but I'm finally able to start working on finishing up my roar and I had a question about the wingtips I'm adding. I'm using Rick's suggestion of using 1/4" balsa for the added 2" I need, but before I glue them on, I wanted to verify the measurement before I make this a permanent piece. My initial thinking was that I would mark a line about half the wing width at the spar, and do the same at the leading edge, and then line up the back edge with the trailing edge, since these are about the same size pieces. But when I tried lining these marks up, the mark at the spar is about 1 mm below the leading edge mark and the trailing edge...... However, when I line up the leading edge mark with the trailing edge, the wingtip looks almost centered. Is this how I would be doing this?

Hopefully the pics I'm trying to attach will work, so that you can see what I'm trying to describe so that I can be sure I add these correctly.....

Thanks guys for all your advice and input......

Dak/Mikey,

Looking good so far. I am thinking you are close enough to grab the bottle of glue. But if you wish to mess with it a little more....here are some things to play with.

Ideally you want the tip to connect through the center of the radius that makes up the leading edge and to line up with the trailing edge. In your second picture you look very close. However in picture three it looks as though the front edge of the tip is a little high on the wing. Not much. Remember these wings are not truly symmetrical because of the flat across the bottom (for building ease).

I have attached a JPG file of the rib centerline drawing I have. I think this is posted elsewhere in the thread. This is what I used to center the ailerons. Notice from the spar forward and about two inches of the trailing edge have the sheeting and cap strips represented on this drawing. I have also added the dimensions in the case you have a way of printing and scaling the print till you get it to the right size.

Also when finishing up your tips keep in mind how they look and line up with the ailerons as well. In other words stick an aileron in place and make sure the tip looks like you want it to look.

Don’t forget to glue in some blocks at the leading edge and sand to shape. It’s looking good.

A while back someone was looking for the tail feathers presented in a different way. So, while I was messing around with the white back ground on my CAD software I created these jpegs of the elevator and rudder with a couple of reference dimensions in case it is of use to someone.

Very cool planes... I've been following this thread for a whle.. good stuff guys. I don't have an Uproar.. but I have been building a Dazzler slowly... actually have a build thread on RCG.. I can't resist throwing a pic up here.. Looking at the attachments and plans.. these are very near identical planes.. the radio compartment is identical. I'm just at the point of installing the rx/batt in that cove/LE of the wing.. I'm putting a Magnum.46 on it for power... Flying this thing on the RealFlight sim in nuts.. can't wait to see what the plane will actually do in real flight(no punn intended..)..... heres few a quick pics..

Fantastic job with the covering[8D]. Those flag schemes with the transparent colors are just cool! I can appreciate the checkers on the tail as well.

Only two things I know of different between the Dazzler and Uproar – the turtle deck and the ailerons. I think I wrote this earlier in the thread - I am pretty sure the plans of the Dazzler and Uproar came off the same desk (literally) one way or the other.

A fellow ProBro came up with the flag scheme. There was a write-up in one of the RC mags a few years ago. It def. looks nice.
I think that the pic. of the Dazzler is the nicest looking scheme in this whole thread! You did a nice job!

Yes.... That's the thread.. I referenced that in my build thread... along with another thread that I used to get the "checkerboard" effect for the tail.
What I had was basically a white canvas.. and I had the opportunity to do a scheme I've admired for a long time.. matter of fact, I ran across the original thread on RCU more then 10yrs ago.. and its a 3D American flag.. Here's a link to that thread for your reference if you're interested:

http://www.rcuniverse.com/forum/tm.asp?m=603331

Its an interesting thread with some great pics of some very nice planes.
I saw that thread 10yrs ago and always wanted to try it..

The other thread I found is how achieved the checkerboard tail... and that technique will work for virually any type of graphic.. Here's that thread..

http://www.youtube.com/watch?feature...&v=8NhLZ-4V1pM

I again thank the original thread starters/videographers for the info I received to get a plane like this.. whereever they are..... and I'm now seeing many very incredible planes in this thread too..
I've wondered what happened to "Termigator" though.. I had a few interactions years ago ... he's got some great concepts.. I'm in graphic arts/printing myself too.. so its all very handy.. and I've enjoyed and followed this thread a few years.. its all good stuff guys.. very cool.

Heres my Dazzler build thread if anybody might want to check it out.. its only about 10-12pgs... just some notes I took and stuff I threw on there..

http://www.rcgroups.com/forums/showthread.php?t=1403724

Have a great weekend everyone.

hey gang, got out today with the roar, it caught a stong cross wind and cart wheeled. she lost the lg and poked a hole in the bottom wing. this was my first flight of the year and it was 50deg's and blowing 10+mph which isn't bad at all but there was a slight gust as i lifted off and my bud standing next to me says he figuered it would be the problem. best part is she already repaired and ready to go again saturday. winds should be the same.

got to fly the ajslick 42inch ws and it got tossed around a little also but all fun for the 1 flight.....man do i need to down load realflight back into my computer.

I finally got tired of messing with the “purple” machine. Seams like no mater what I try to do with the covering I just can’t get it right[:@]. Got carried away with the metallic red shadow on the star. Once it was on there I wasn’t taking it off[:-]. Added metallic red and some gold to cover up the plum on the elevator. Got tired of messing with it before I did the rudder.

To see it close up - it looks - road hard and put up wet.....As I said before it’s no show bird. It’s built to fly.......

It’s time to get one of those ST 40’s taken apart, cleaned up, and stuck on this thing, so I can go fly the wings off of it some more.

rick, shes looking good! i got 3 flight on the roar yesturday and started to relax from being so rusty at the sticks. i would have flow the slick more than once but the plastic lg bolts snapped on the first landing that wasn't even bad.....plastic bolts can be cracked and let go on even the best landings.

question for ya rick..how many roars do you still have,i seem to remember 3??

Stewart,

Your inquiry prompted me to get current pictures. Yep, there were and are three. Intended for myself and obviously two other people. But they’re all still hangered in my garage. With the exception of the purple machine they look pretty much the same. The red one is still as good as new. The blue one shows a little wear and tear.

For those that may not have read this thread from the beginning...These three planes were covered with Monokote that I had in a box that I strait up wanted to use in order to get rid of it. The newest of those rolls of covering were from 1990. Much of it was new around 1985.

Over the past 12 months or more – These planes have not made the trip to the flying field as much as they had been through 2011. Here is the flight totals.

#1 BLUE last time in the air 12/8/12 it has 75 total flights
#2 RED last time in the air 7/29/12 it only has 21 flights on it.
#3 PURPLE crashed it 7/8/12 total of 92 flights.
