What caught my attention was that it was about a 1.25. Mine is an early A model and has always turned on the low side.

I'll have to get a measurement in my shop tomorrow. I'm unclear though on what points on the engine you're taking the measurements from. Are you looking for dimension "I" on the chart? That's speced at 112mm. Would it be possible to give me a wider angle on that photo? Thanks for the tip.

I it is sir, I measured from the bottom of the mounting lug to the top of the rocker cover. When I had the camera close enough to be able to read the numbers it was too close to take in the measuring points. Sorry about that. I'll try a better picture in a while.

Barrry, when I had a 1.25 if decided that it was a 9,000 rpm engine and did its best work when propped that way.

I've run two 125's in for mates and i don't know what it will take on glo ignition to get the best out of one. They seem to be the laziest engine i've ever run into.

ORIGINAL: Cougar429

I have been running my early gen Saitos, (without the quiet cam profile) on between one to two thou clearance. Easy to check as I cut a strip from a shim each thickness and ink marked them for thickness. The one thou should fit and slide with the valve closed and the two thou will bind. Quick and dirty and works fine.

If everything I learned means anything, you need some clearance as you are checking cold. When the engine is at temp that clearance can close up. If set too tight cold you run the risk of incomplete valve closure, especially on the exhaust. Short life expectancy for the valve face and/or seat.

Hobbsy, we woke to the same thing this morning. Had to clean off the car to go to work. Remote start is a must here. As for your neighbor, another argument would be to ask her if she cooks with alcohol. If so no more wasteful than powering a Saito.
Cougar thats a lot of bad information there, you've got your expansion rates bass akward and the theory that goes with it.

Mike, you might do better to ask this in the Gas Engines Forum, there are several Saito threads going over there. Take care, Dave

On Glow plugs...
I have (3) three of these http://www.horizonhobby.com/products/HAN3011 (Hanger 9 3031's)
I have a brand new FA-100 GK and am going to break her in this weekend (03/29/13)...............
My question: Is it OK and/or good practice for me to break-in the FA-100 in on the Hanger-9's 3031's and then switch to the OS-F plugs for the lastsequenceof 10 mins. during break-in (the last 30-40 mins.) and continued use of the OS-F's for duration of the FA-100's life.... or will breaking in the engine with a differentplugcauseany issue when I move to the OS-F's for ever....???
Or should I stay with one glow-plug thru-out.

P.S. Not sure if it matters, but I am going to break her in and continue with PowerMaster 20/20 YS fuel... yeah baby ! Going in a GP Revolver 70", btw.
Yes, I am anal, lol.

Vic, you can install the OS-f from the git go or run the H9, the H9 plugs are great plugs. I happen to be one who does not go along with the idea that breaking in an engine ruins a plug. My old Enya .46MKII still has the original Enya A3 that was in it when I bought in 1990. I have several Saito that have had the same Fox Miracle in them for 10 years or so. I am not familiar with the H9 3031. Keep us posted on your Saito child raising.

70 degrees, I dream about that, this was here just a couple of days ago.

G'day

Like Dave Hobbs, I am still using the first plug that either came in or was put in my new Saitos. Some are now several years old.

I generally use the Saito plug that comes with a Saito but if I need a replacement, I use an OS F or an Enya #3. Both work fine. I have recently bought a couple of Enya F plugs to try.

When four strokes don't run well (usually other club members), I generally suggest they try some of my fuel before anything else. This usually solves the problem. One friend was using fuel which I mixed for him. Then he complained that it would not work. We tried the usual tuning but then I filled his tank with my fuel and the engine was totally happy. On investigation it turned out that he had been using the Solaro method of fuel storage. He had lots of tail ends in several containers and he poured the lot into a half full bottle of the fuel I had mixed. The old fuel wrecked the good fuel.

Another friend found that after his first flight his remaining fuel was discoloured and dark. He found that with each succeeding flight the engine would get rougher and rougher until it stopped in flight. We sampled the fuel in the tank and sure enough it was quite dark. A complete fresh tank and the motor was happy again. So this motor has now been converted to run without muffler pressure. It now works fine. My Saitos do not foul up their fuel. The engines that did were ASPs.

Cheers

Mike in Oz

I sure do like the 20/20 fuel blend. There is plenty of oil splatter everywhere that makes me feel good.

No need for another picture. Your explanation as to the measurement points answered the question. I'll give it a shot tomorrow ands see how close I come. Thanks...

It does look cold going by the picture you post.I would'nt be keen to fly in that, would be fun to do it once.It does seem funny to think that excess machining swarf or other debri would somehow stick to the element/filiment and blow your plug up.H9 plugs as supplied last for ages.

Peter, I have seen over the years, pictures of plugs whose elements have had little rounds blobs of something but it never looked like metal. It always appeared to be something non metal that leached out of the fuel during the combustion process. I have never that from any fuel I've used. So far anyway.

I have a couple of plugs that are in a bag marking them as break in plugs. Maybe there is truth to the swarf thing, maybe not. Just something I've always been in the habit of doing. I"m sure there is plenty of metal being slung around as parts mate to each other, and then is blown out the exhaust. At one time, maybe this was just a thing to do. Nowadays, glow plugs are too expensive to be buying all time time, imo. I put the new plugs in an engine once it is on the model and is ready to go flying. If there is enough metal to stick to the element and fry a glow plug then I've probably saved the price of a glow plug over time. That would average out to about an hour or two of flying a Saito maybe?

Many thanks to all who piped in on my glow plug & engine break-in strategy. I will probably go with the plug that is included with the engine (from mfr.), and then do an A&B on the Hanger 9's vs. the OS-F's.

I will report back, hopefully, this coming Monday (weather permitting)... can you say, "I AM SICK OF WINTER !!!!!"

Thanks guys, much appreciated.

Ok, some (or all) of you might think I'm being sacriligious for even asking this question, but how cheap can you go with glow plugs? I have used numerous brands over the years, OS, Hangar 9, Fox, etc... But I see that there are some dirt cheap glow plugs sold by Hobby City (King). Has anybody tried those (and still publicly admit it)?

I never saw any difference between the Saito SS and the OS F, except the Saito was a lot cheaper a couple of years ago.

The Fox Miracle plug works on my 4-strokes, and it is cheaper than the OS F type.
