RE: Charlie Kellogg's TBM Avenger Build
OK, I'm going to have to invest in a Solo Propeller... Looks spot on.
Nice work, Peter!
Cant wait to see the fully assembled model out of doors, staged like the real deal! (and in the air, too).
Best,
Noah

RE: Charlie Kellogg's TBM Avenger Build
Hey guys,
Peter great work, I'm sure it will be a hit with everyone who sees it.
Update on our maiden flight...
Started getting everything buttoned up for our maiden flight hopefully by mid April weather permitting. We are still having issues with the tail wheel, stays locked some times and not others even with extending the servo throw.
We are thinking of locking the wheel in the down position for the maiden flight and then going back to see if we can solve the problem. The major obstacle is that there is no way to get into the fuse to file that piece without do major cutting, reglassing and repainting (yuck).
Finally finished the move into my inlaws condo 2 weeks ago, very cramped, barely have room for my build table... but on the bright side 52 more weeks and I'm finished with work and then the packing for the move to AZ where I get a whole garage for the planes .
Hopefully will be back to the Trojan build by the end of the month, I haven't been able to touch it since XMAS due to packing for the move.
Charlie sorry I missed you at the show, it got a bit better than last year but I'm sure Fran told you.
Still looking forward to seeing the S-2 build thread...
Stay warm guys, spring is just around the corner except maybe for Peter who only gets 2 months of warm weather LOL

RE: Charlie Kellogg's TBM Avenger Build
Hello I just bought a Kellogg TBM Avenger kit and was interested in what engine you all prefer or have used or have had feed back on people using.
Thanks for responding Rod

RE: Charlie Kellogg's TBM Avenger Build
Of those flying, I only know about models powered with a 3W 75cc, or a Moki 150 cc, Brison 5.8 or ZDZ 90cc. All fly the plane very well. All have plenty of power.
3W 75 (charlie Kellogg's model):
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1tpOricl4xo
Moki 150 (my model):
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=G7YUSobbRxw
Brison 5.2 (Brian's model):
http://rcuvideos.com/video/avenger-Brian-wmv
The ZDZ90-powered is owned by Frank... not sure there's any video but he said it flies great.
There is another under construction, with DA 85cc engine installed, and still another that will have a Saito 450R (I think) radial.
I would say anything above a 4.2 ci (69cc) would fly the plane (even fully detailed and close to 50 lbs) in a very scale manner. I was originally going to install a Zenoah 80cc twin, but I went overboard with the radial. You shouldl be able to get a brand new Zenoah GT-80 for about $500 (if you search them out for sale on this or other RC websites)

Hey guys,
Question, we are ready to set up the flap travel and was wondering what everybody is programing the amount of drop?
That is the last thing we need to do before our first flight by Mid April if the weather cooperates.
Hope everybody is doing well

RE: Charlie Kellogg's TBM Avenger Build
Larry, I don't know the exact throw (in degrees), as I've never measured it, but I would guess that mine don't drop more than 30 degrees.
Because the flaps run nearly the entire span of the wing (and the ailerons are not very long), the flaps are very effective.
I don't think there's any need to get them to reply any more than 40 degrees. Certainly not for the first flights. If you feel you need more in the future after the shake-down flights, then you can dial in some more.
Below is a picture of my flaps fully deployed. Credit for the photo goes to RCKen, who I met when we both attended Warbirds of Tulsa, OK this past summer.
Best,
Noah

Peter, am in shock of how incredible your model is. It is a true work of art.
Mine, on the other hand. Is a stand off scale version.....stand waaaayyy off scale. I need to finish a few things like gear doors, turret , batteries, balance , etc.. but should fly in the next couple of months when the weather and field dry up.

RE: Charlie Kellogg's TBM Avenger Build
Peter,
Are you all finished and ready for Toledo now? Be careful transporting that baby down there, and good luck at the event!!
Jim,
Your Avenger looks great, too. Will you bring it to the Indiana Warbird Campaign this fall? I'm trying to work out some time away from work to get up there this year. Maybe we can get them in the air together!

Peter, your Avenger looks great! I´m looking forward to the maiden flight video. Do know the weight?
Maybe you´ve just written it, but this thread is very long and it could be very difficult to find this information.
Thank you.

Anyone heading to Camden, SC for the Sodbuster's Warbird Invasion?
I'm heading up there April 25-27 to cover the bases and maybe get a High Flight pictoral in the mag.

RE: Charlie Kellogg's TBM Avenger Build
Peter, can you take some closeups of how you split the pilot canopies. I want to do that on my Kellogg AD5. Charlie and I have been scratching our heads on this one. He mention to me that you did it on your Avenger. Do you have pics of the process? I have been watching this build and its is beautiful.

Congratulations, Peter!!!
Well done!
Looking forward to pictures.
A friend of mine was there and reported it was head and shoulders above all else.
Best,
Noah
