Hi John,

You have some nice work going on there. I used the FG cowl and wheel pants Stickbuilder Bill recommended way back in the forum. I did cut a quarter inch out of the center, and I don't think it altered the shape enough to notice.

As for paint, and covering, I'll give you what I did and make a few recommendations. At least a few steps I won't do again. I covered with Sig Koverall. I first tried the Balsarite for fabric to attach the fabric I started on the elevators first and put two coats around the edges. I found that it was too much - one coat should have been enough. Then I went with Nitrate dope to attach the fabric and I liked that better, so I did the rest of the model with dope. With either method, you shouild dope all surfaces that will be in contact with the fabric.

After covering it I applied three coats of 50-50 dope and thinner to the entire airframe. It was beginning to look real good at this point but I wanted to fill the fabric a little more. At this time a discussion on the forum began about how good Min-Wax PloyCrylic was in fillingthe weaveand giving a nice finish. So I then applied several slightly thinned (with water) coats of the PolyC. Now it looked real good. However, this stuff needs some care in application or you get a lot of tiny bubbles that may not flatten out prior to setting up, and they have to be sanded out prior to the next coat. I also discovered I had some runs around the leading edges of the wing and stab to late to doanyhthing about it. The PolyC does not seem to cure to a completely hard state (unless I didn't wait long enough). Trying to sand our a run makes a bigger mess that the run itself.

Finally, when I got ready for the color, I was about to go back to dope and was told not to apply dope over anything but dope. So I painted it with KlasKote epoxy (KK). I like this paint, as it's almost exactly like the old K & B Poxy we all loved. I made two mistakes here and it was not the paint. When I was ready to paint I first wiped it down with a damp clean cloth and waited for it to dry. Then I wiped it down with a Tack Rag. It has been so dry where I live that I was building up a slight static charge on the model with the tackrag, and I ended up with a less than perfect finish. as Ithink it attracted the dust fromthe air. Finally, in my attempt to keep the finish light, I did not apply enough paint. I did go over the PolyC with a very light coat of KK white primer, and sanded it lightly. However this was not enough to make the finish opaque, and light does show through it. Not what I really wanted.

If I ever do another model with a fabric covering, I WILL use Silver SolarTex iron on fabric. This had ben recommended by a friend who had just covered a large BUSA SE-5. He loved it. First, it needs very little or no filiing. It goes around curvers well and sticks good. Second, it is pretty much opaque, so light will not show through the covering. It will probably need a light coat or two of white primer or paint if you are going to paint your model a light color. Both cream and red apply here. If you decide to go with rib stitching, and the pinked tape, I think the SolarTex is the material used for that.

Good luck and enjoy.

Joe

Beautiful work going on. There will be quite an amazing group of WACOs coming out soon.

The latest Model Aviation magazine has an ad page fron Dynam (Nitroplanes) which lists a 1270mm wingspan (50 inch) 4 channel WAKO Bi-Plane (yes, WAKO is how they spelled it!). It's in the classic yellow with black trim sceme. Might be worth a look into.

I'm headed to the Owls Head Transportation Museum near Rockland, Maine this weekend with my Great Planes WACO-YMF ARF for display at their Spring Model Festival.
http://www.ohtm.orgModFest_10.html. I plan to bring along a new ARF Katana and build it there over the weekend.

Should be a fun weekend with amazing models of planes, cars, boats, trains engines and more.

Hi Joe,
Thank you for the finishing info, I was planning on using SolarTex, but silver is a great choice. I believe I read where the early aircraft were sprayed with silver to keep the UV off the airframe. I have this compatibility chart from a old AMA article by Bill Boss (pic 1), hope it helps anyone with what to put over various paints, I've found it handy.

You removed 1/4" from just the center of the wheel pants? Did you slit them in half and taper the removal to the front end, to keep the overall length the same? I have mulled over these glass pants from F & M for a bit now, they are 3/4" too wide, thats quite a bit. Well guess ill try slitting them down the parting line and remove some of the center area.

I like the color scheme of NC424 too, looks great in the air, I also thought about NC110AS, I like the dark green an cream colors. I'm ordering my graphics from Cal-Grafx, guess it will be around $70 or 80 they seem to do good work.

I will post more pics of the fuselage when I get the upper section done.
John

I think someone on the thread ordered a pair from F-M and asked them to remove the 1/4 inch from the center section. I do remember seeing that post. your tail wheel assembly looks great where did you get it, or did you make this one.
ORIGINAL: jlhambright

Hi all, sorry I haven't contributed much to the thread, but I have been busy with my AMA Pica build and wife hasn't felt well, so time has been short since first of year.

Both Wings & tail feathers are done, I'm working on the fuselage now. Just bent up the LG and installed in fuse with shock assembly. I installed the servos and have some linkage ran before going to far on the fuselage, have the bottom wing fitted level with crutch and 0 deg incidence. I don't care for the rear mount carb on the DLE, it places the choke and throttle linkage right in front of the fuel tank, had to make a 180 degree bellcrank for the choke, next one will have a duel assem for throttle and choke. Since the model will be a super did the rudder balance tab, raised the tailwheel 3" and redesigned the LG 3" lower with stock tract width, I am not quite sure where fuse stations were moved to get the 10" length overall length increase, so I built the fuse to plan.

I see -7 used the same full size Waco to model as I have, you did a great job, even the axel covers on wheel pants nice detail, what type of paint did you you use? I am thinking about water based house paint, have used it in the past, it's easy to color match, but gloss is somewhat of a problem.

The only concern I have is the wheel pants, Fibertec n more's cowl is great but wheel pants are 3/4" to wide and not quite the right profile. I could cut it out down the center, but that would shorten them too much. Thought about making my own fiberglass mold, which is the only way I can see to get multiple copies of the correct shape. Does anyone have a better solution? Started to carve a scale WP and one of my dogs found it and chewed the rear section, oh well I think I will do it in foam anyway. Will try to contribute to the thread more often, here are some pics of my attempts at a Waco.

Hi George,
I made the Tailwheel assem from brake line tubing, brass tube and sheet brass. I have hand drawings of it and will post it when I dig it out from all the balsa dust, my shops a mess. Thanks for the tip on the WP, will give them a call, still might make a fiberglass mold of carved one, really not to hard to make. I am working on the inner WP fairing now, will try to make a vacuum mold of this part, it really adds to the overall look of the whole assem. Thanks again for the tip

John

I had a great time today at the Owls Head Transportation Museum Model Festival. The WACO got a lot of attention form the public and fellow modelers. There was a large display of aircraft, boats, cars, trains and engines along with flight and car demos.

Whew! Finally! We got away from the farm and back to our home in town. Now once again I can get to putting my shop back together. Been away from the house for a couple of years, and really missed it. Thanks Dan Hudson for all your help.

A few pics from the Owls head model Festival. The last two are a beautiful Pitcairn Mailwing which was recently donated to the museum. It would make a great model!
A couple of short videos as well. There was a lot more going on than I got on camera.

Have they ever covered the s.e.5 that was on display there? A few years ago I heard they were planning to cover and fly it. Great museum! ...

They are working on covering it but I don't know the time frame. It is currently in the workshop and wasn't on display at this show. I recently donated a 1/6 scale Top Flite Dave Platt SE5a kit to the museum to display along with it.

They have a WACO in their collection that museum members can buy rides in as well as their PT-17 Stearman (seen in the background of the picture above). Theirs is a 1931 WACO UBF-2. http://www.ohtm.org/edu_col.html

I've been dreaming of building a scale Waco for years and finally decided to get started. This thread has been amazing to learn about all the possibilities. So my first Waco arrived yesterday and today I had my first build session. I'm really excited about this plane and already having fun. Thinking of building a 25% or 33% soon and thought I would start with a 20% to learn the aircraft and improve my build skills. Build time is limited now so I started with an ARF to get a head start and will detail it out a bit. Nice big box arrived with good packaging. Covering is sagged a bit and I am thinking of recovering in solartex.

OK first day with Waco and I had to start with the engine - my favorite part of the plane. Wanted to add some detail but not too much weight. Came in at 1.6 oz YIKES! There's a lot I want to add to do to the plane so every ounce is important. I'll power with a Neu 1515 2Y 1100KV but want to try to make it look like a radial. I found a good reference photo online and tried to follow it.

I hope you folks don't mind but I'm so excited about my Waco that I just had to share it.
It's a 1/4 scale 1936 WACO YKS-6 "Custom Cabin" ARF.
100 in. Wingspan
74 in. long
Weighs about 22 lbs.
I put a UMS 7-77 Radial up front.

The maiden went exceptionally well. Only small aileron trim was needed and she flew hands off. The radial, beside sounding great also ran great.
It was one of those times when all went well and we all go home with a big smile on our face.

Worked on the landing gear today. I made some cross braces and I'm happy with the way they came out. .4 oz added - not bad and adds a nice detail to the ARF. I installed some small eye bolts - reinforced the landing gear cover prior. I used elastic cable to support the aluminum tubes and they are fairly secure and also give just enough to flex with landings. Next step is to detail the wheel paints.

WacoDream - Thanks for the good comments.

Your project looks very nice. For me, the ARF was the way to go. But I sure admire the craftsmen's work posted on this forum.

Hello, Thank you. I cannot find templates that were trace from original wood parts. I just want to build one more Pica Waco 1/5 Scale Plane. If I had the templates would be all set. My plane I inherited is in pretty rough shape, Have plans instruction manual. Found templates once, think from this link, but they seem to be gone http://www.houseofmoy.com/waco/ Any help in getting full size templates for formers and all cut out wood parts wood be greatly appreciated. Also want to join WACO Brotherhood. Daniel L. Thank you all for the help.
