Proper gas mixture
What is the proper gas mixture for start up for the first time. The instructions for the boat say a ratio of more oil than gas. Is this correct for boats?
This is the boat that I have : http://www.nitrorcx.com/99b-12016-1400-dr260-artr.html

I run 8 ounces of oil to a gallon of gas and don't bother with adding more oil for break-in as you're not going to use much fuel anyway in that process. If you want, just set the needles a little bit richer. I actually use campstove fuel and synthetic oil in mine, Coleman or Ozark Trail from Wal-mart and Honda HP-2 oil. The fuel is cleaner burning and has no additives that can harm the gaskets and diaphragm in the carb, especially ethanol.

RE: Proper gas mixture
The fuel/oil mix you run can make a difference.
Good CLEAN FRESH filtered non-ethanol gasoline with 10 ounces of a quality 2 stroke oil.
If you want inexpensive there is Mercury quicksilver premium non synthetic available. You want the best get some Maxima castor 927.
The best two stroke fuel around for the money is 100LL from the airport. It is clean and consistant quality that won't go bad on you in a few weeks. Use steel can for your main storage and a smaller one for fueling. I mean if your taking a trip to get fuel you probably want to get 4-5 gallons at a time. Many airports will only pump 100ll into steel cans anyhow. You can get the 5 gal steel cans cheap at a local Race fuel supplier.
Keeping dirt out of the fuel system is absolutely paramount to a engine that won't give you carb troubles for a long time. Throw some dirty old ethanol bearing pump gas in it and you will for sure have issues sooner than you want.

RE: Proper gas mixture
As far as power goes, Our dyno tests of a lot of different "gasolines" along with different oils at the same 8 oz. per gallon ratio found very little to no difference at the best needle setting. Less than 8 oz per gallon will result in some power loss. Non ethanol fuels are easier on diaphragms, and our tests won't show differences in engine life with different products.
The bottom line is that octane doesn't matter in these low compression, industrial type engines. We did find a power gain over the 40 to 50, 5 second, full power dyno runs during the tests. That means that the engine can be run at full throttle out of the box but will gain power as things wear in.

RE: Proper gas mixture
Stock engines will run fine with 4 oz. oil to a gallon. However, more oil gives more power, at least up to 10 oz per gallon. I have no idea how the quantity of oil affects engine life, but rod big end bearings are starting to fail after a fairly short time in racing engines. The solution is oil slots and more oil in the fuel.

What do you do when the waste that's left in the can? I dump it in a doubled up trash bag and throw it in the trash.

Thanks for all the input. My owners manual is dramatically wrong on such items (thanks china). I like the idea of removing the ethanol in gasoline yourself as I don't have any places near me that sells non ethanol gas. Has anyone else done this method?

RE: Proper gas mixture
We used the water method to measure the amount of ethanol in gasoline. We used a 1000 cc graduated cylinder and didn't shake it much or wait an hour. it worked very well.
