Thanks for following up with the pre-registrations guys. We are up to 23 pre-registered, 3 confirmed but not registered, and still several likely to show but unknown status. So, we could easily be at or above 30!!! That's fantastic.
Looks like D7 is the center of the pattern world in the month of April! This contest is looking to be very well attended and then we have Chip's massive Pattern Bash in Arvin.
Also, FYI to the FAI fliers... I am contemplating making a slight change to the patterns. Once I hear back from Mike that all is well with the scoring program then I will let you all know. But, for now I wouldn't spend too much time practicing USA 1 and USA 2 unknowns. I'll explain more later.

Hi Guys,
A few more registrations have come in. We're at 28 currently, with several still in the unknown category that are regular attendees. If you know of anyone thinking of attending, please drop me a note. I am trying to get the flight orders and judging matrix completed prior to the contest.
Heads up: Bring water and food. Also, it looks like you may want to plan on bringing shade as well. I think we'll have more people than we can fit under the shade structure. That's a good thing from two points of view 1- lots of pilots, 2- Sun!!
I'm attaching the pilot list as it exists today. (at least I thought I was, it won't let me upload right now)

RE: Second Annual Chuck Hartmann Memorial Contest (and FAI Challenge) Riverside 4/13-4/14
Hi Guys,
As I mentioned earlier, I am making a change to the format for the "unknown" portion of the contest. Unless Mike tells me that there is a problem with this format (it should be OK) then here's what we are going to do:
- We are dropping the Japanese sequences for round 1 and now round 1 will be a true unknown. It will be handed out on Saturday after flying is over. It is very similar in difficulty and style to the Japanese sequences so you can use those as a reference for what's in store. Yes, I have seen it but only long enough to enter in the FAI catalog numbers and I promise that's it and I haven't flown it, much less looked at it since early this week. I'm doing this because I've had feedback that some of you want to fly a real unknown. So, here it is.
- We are dropping USA 1 and USA 2 from the round 2 unknown round. Round 2 will be a choice between France 1 and France 2. I really want to include one of these difficult sequences into the mix. Not everyone is in favor of it, but it is important for us to give these maneuvers a try. It is part of the FAI future. I have noticed that since I have been trying some of these crazy knife edge maneuvers I have had quite a lot more interest from fliers at the local field. I think this is good for the sport. So, let's just give it a go.

Here's the latest headcount based on pre-registration and email traffic:
Sportsman=8
Intermediate=3
Advanced=8
Masters=13
FAI=6
Please be ready for pilot's meeting at 8am. We will start Round 1 with Intermediate fliers off the end of the runway (flying east-west) so the sun won't be an issue. We may run two rounds of Intermediate back to back on that line. Then we'll rotate back to the normal flightline.
It is going to be very tight to get all the rounds in with the later starting time we have. So, I am going to be creative with flight orders and flight lines.
We will also need help scoring. I'll take volunteers.. but will draft people if necessary.

Well my son will be there with me and he said he'd be willing to help dictate scores to expedite inputting. He helped out at Hemet, so knows how to do it.

Hey Guys
A few reminders for the weekend:
- there is no power out there so bring your generators or batteries or pre-charged packs
- remember to bring your food and water
- we want to get an earlier start so be ready for pilots mtg at 8am
- sorry, but unlike last year, the road is pretty dusty this year, so go slow on the exit from the main road.
We have a great turnout expected so it looks to be a fun time.

Steve,
Will the field be open Friday for practice? If so is there a lock on the gate?

RE: Second Annual Chuck Hartmann Memorial Contest (and FAI Challenge) Riverside 4/13-4/14
Looks like we'll have a good day tomorrow.
I have been running some flight line scenarios and it looks like we will run Intermediate, FAI, and Advanced on Line 1. Masters and Sportsman on Line 2. The lines are nearly the same size so we won't be splitting Masters across two flight lines in parallel. There's no point in doing that. I will be running Intermediate Round 1 off the edge of the runway at 9am (or earlier). It looks like we will have 6 Intermediate pilots so that should put us in a good spot for the start of the full round 1 with the sun. Oh, and Round 1 Intermediate Judges will be Jim Bronowski and Gary Switala.
I'll announce this in the pilot's meeting tomorrow, but we will really need everyone to be ready to go when their class is up. If everyone pisses away 1 minute per round then we're blowing an hour off our flight time through the day. So, I'll be yelling at everyone to get moving.... [>:]
See you all in the morning.
And one other thing, leave me a parking spot by the shade structure so I can be close the the pit area. Like someone else said earlier, you don't want a grumpy CD in the morning....

Stopped by for a few hours to check it out since I've never been to a contest. Wish I actually entered this one as it looked like a lot of fun. Here is a photo of about half the planes that were there.

Hey Guys
Thanks so much for the great turnout!!!! We had a pretty full field and, with the fog and sun challenges on Saturday, it was a real challenge to fit it all in. But, thanks to everyone's flexibility and willingness to keep things moving we were able to fit in 6 rounds for Sportsman, Intermediate, Advanced and FAI. Masters was only able to get 5 rounds, but I think it was the wise thing to do so that the out of towners could get on the road.
Sorry I see Jarvis already posted the scores. But here they are again with some comments.
Sportsman
Jamie Schoolcraft 4000
Gary Banducci 3856
Steve Lampert 3771
Mike Whitacre 3659
Dick Chrystie (Spelled with a Y, not an I) 3428
James Whitacre 3391 (so, does James have to buy his brother Mike a dinner now?)
Intermediate
Brock Vaughn 3967
Lawrence Tougas 3919
Christopher Walker 3889 (the gear held up with the fancy shock absorbers)
Randy McElhattan 1905
Jean Greear 1616
Advanced
Robert Fish 3965 (even with a couple flameouts)
Jon Bruml 3923
Glen Dean 3852
Gary Switala 3760 (I think you should bring a real jacket to So Cal contests from now on)
Mike Greear 3736 (Kept the scoring program running)
Bill Malvey 3141
Jim Bronowski 2518
Masters
Matt Stringer 4000 (move up, uhh.. no stay where you are at)
Bryant Mack 3910 (ditto)
Jerry Budd 3807 (The nose job helped the Gaudius)
Jon Carter 3719 (the extra wing on the Angel Shadow must have done the job)
Sean Mersh 3641
Dale Olstinske 3540 (see.. you needed that canalizer like Jon)
Frank Capone 3492
Jarvis Johnson 3375
Steve Kaneshiro 3204

Bill Wallace 866 (sorry about the motor mount)
FAI

I think the FAI crew enjoyed the format. I am attaching the Round 1 unknown that was flown. It was flown at the 2009 US Nats. For Round 2 we flew France 2, also attached. I, personally, had a great time with this format. It was fun flying the unknown and really a blast flying the knife edge maneuver intensive French routine. I hope we do this again in the near future. It's great training for the pilots and I think it was fun for the other guys to see this kind of format.
This contest was a great warmup to Chip's Pattern Bash coming in a couple weeks. Don't forget to pre-register. I would not have been able to make our contest work if I didn't have the level of pre-registration that we had.
Once again, thanks for everyone that came out, all the guys that judged without a single moan or complaint, the scoring help from the Greears, the Szeubers, Kit Switala, and anyone else that jumped in (and Larry Roberts for the last minute printer cartridge run). And thanks to the Riverside RC Club for the use of the field.

RE: Second Annual Chuck Hartmann Memorial Contest (and FAI Challenge) Riverside 4/13-4/14
I want to thank Steve for the incredible job he did this weekend. 35 pilots, late start on Saturday (fog) and we were still done with 6 rounds for eveyone except Master's who got 5 in. Plus the FAI format seemed well received. It was fun to watch!! Ans thanks as well to the Riverside RC Club for the use of their field this weekend.
See you all in Arvin.
