RE: Knowledge Quiz for Warbird wiz
Ok this is different from most previous questions.
I began in 1942
President Roosevelt felt I was so important he sent 10 aircraft to support me. (C-53 skymasters)
After the loss of two key cities I became the only answer to a hard problem
In order to make me more effective a small number of civilian aitcraft and crews volunteered to help.(Dc-3s)
Prior to my begining in 1942 another group of volunteers kept my predecessors safe.

Lets continue in a similar vein:
1. This mission was a precursor to a much more famous one.
2. It was a strategic as well as tactical success.

RE: Knowledge Quiz for Warbird wiz
nope but keep trying! here's another clue
Lets continue in a similar vein:
1. This mission was a precursor to a much more famous one.
2. It was a strategic as well as tactical success.
3. The aircraft used were considered obsolete.
4. Not the Doolittle raid.... though there is a very tenuous connection.
5. The loss rate in planning for this mission was estimated at 50%, in the event 2 out of the 21 attacking aircraft were shot down.
6. In another operation, later in the war, the aircraft suffered 100% casualties mostly from enemy fighters.

Aloha, how about, "First raids into Germany," probably with Brit Lancastrers? Or, "Operation Chastise, Ruhr Valley Dams?" wallace.tharp

RE: Knowledge Quiz for Warbird wiz
Hmmm...
Nearly 100% casualties from enemy fighter and a connection to Dolittle makes me think of one of my favorite old lumbering planes I plan to build one day if i ever work out how to do the corrugation on the wings. (I have plans for an 80" version).
I'm not that good at Trivia, But I think I might have this one nailed:
The USS Hornet (used in Dolittle raid) was involved in the Battles of the Coral Sea (precursor battle) and Midway (More famous battle) where the obsolete TBD Devestators were all but wiped off the face of history books. - not 1 survives today
Though losses of this plane were atrocious- the battles were won & therefore considered a tactical and strategic success

7. The squadron leader in the later attack was awarded the countries highest honour.... posthumously.
8. The aircraft was a biplane.
