I'm looking at the weight of all those spruce stringers behind the CG, and wonder if anyone has gotten away with substituting balsa stringers. My numbering seems to point at saving 4.8 to 5 pounds of nose weight if I replace all the stringers.....but what about structural integrity??

You are not going to 3D this airframe. Balsa stringers will show everyone that has ever handled this airframe. They will get all beat up from handling/hanger rash.

Yeh, I know....3D is not in my vocabulary, but hanger rash is. If I split 1/2 and 1/2 I'll save 2 pounds nose weight......
All the cautions about the plane building tail heavy have me worked up a bit. Hate to build a 25 pound plane then have to add 7 pounds to balance like 1 guy did....

Use spruce on the bottom and the very top which is where hangar rash most likey occurs. It is rare that I bang the side of the fuse into a door, but the bottom will get dinged from sitting the in the stand, setting it down on the screw driver that I did not see on the work bench...etc. Likewise on top, You always back that top spine when you lift it up out of the rack in the truck/trailer, again sitting in the stand inverted, or you look under it as you go out the door and and whach...door frame.
