Default MN jet rally 2013 - new site?

Hello everyone,

We are looking forward to the 8th MN Jet rally this year. We lost our previous site and currently have an option for holding at our club field (grass) in Rochester, MN, or at another airport.

I began looking (just) outside of MN because of some state "statutes" and we have had good luck with a group in New Hampton, IA. This location is closer about another hour South from where we previously had the event. The town is interested in the event and I will go down shortly to inspect the runway. We can stand on the west side with a mostly N-S runway. We are working for some hangar space as well, no gauranteed yet. 2-3 good hotel choices in town and we are only 2-3 miles from the town.

Take a look at it if you like. I would like to hear back from people about that are considering attending. It looks like a great opportunity.

Thanks
Dave

Based off the AirNav photo that location looks great. I will be attending for the first time no matter what. Good luck

Thanks

I was hoping this news would have stimulated a few more posts, but I am glad you took a look!

I will post pics from the "ground" when I get there later this month.

I am trying to figure how we will setup; being on the west side would be ideal from a sun issue. I think we should fly to the East as well becuase of the lake, camping area.

Yes, I hope to get some pictures in the next few weeks. I will take my UB down to check it out.

I am not certain of the condition of the runway. I expect it might be a little rough compared to Rushford, we'll see.

I will report back here and post pics for all. The group down that way has been EXTREMELY POSITIVE and HELPFUL about the idea of this event.

I also have been very fortunate in that my local club has us covered for a backup site at the very least. Being close to home would be nice too, but this loacation isnt too far away.

I will also update the http://www.mnjets.info site as soon as I can too.

Checking on Super 8 availability. I will see about a group rate. They also have a pool and a conference room...

Looks promising Dave.....17/35 is good......forgot what Rushford was, but anything more east of south, rather than straight N/S gives you less sun problem in the early morning..........for us, about the same distance....straight shot down to Praire du Chien and then a short hop over to New Hampton......

Tom,
Rushford was 16/34 but also was up on the bluff..
WE should be in good shape here, I am just trying to figure how to get the parking and flying on the west with a safe spectator area too.
I wonder if we have enough room if we go directly across the taxiway...

Looks like a good possibility. We would need to favor toward the north end in order to avoid flying over what appears to be their hanger and also leave enough room for spectators to be able to cross over the runway at that same end. Also looks like a couple of race tracks of some sort just east of the hanger??? Just things to check out when you go down there to "test fly".

Thanks everyone for your comments.

The runway and taxiway are ideal for a setup flying over the West side. If we go that route we will have great flying most of the day if not all day! I do have to check on whether we can overfly the things on that side to the North and West.

Worst case, as Jerry mentioned, I think we could move far down to the North and setup on the West facing East.

I will clarify all of this with the folks down there shortly and report back here.

Now, do we need a new name for the event?

Good luck Dave looks like a great site. Hope it works for you. Don't think I will make it down. One trip down to Minnesota a year is enough for me, but maybe if it works out for you there, maybe another time.

Yes fine thanks. Just waiting for the A 123 revision from Jetcat, batteries and the new PowerBox Royal SRS. Otherwise snow is about gone and just waiting for the temps to get a bit warmer.

LOL, that was funny Don!

I agree that is likely best; just have to make sure we can fly over that side.

Jerry and Lance, if you start making adjustments now in your bedtiem and AM routine, you will be able to join us in the AM!

The Super 8 in New Hampton has offered us a 15% discount for the event.
While it is early to book a room, they can be reached at 641-394-3838 , ask for Brad or Amy.
Dates are 8/21-25. They mentioned that Saturday was beginning to fill up...

I told them that we wil confrim the even within the next 2-3 weeks and they are going to hold ten rooms, some with double beds for a few weeks.

There is only one other hotel in town and then another greater than 10 miles away so this one is most convenient....

Hey, now Don, don't be mean spirited. Why do you think we've always liked the Tecumseh & Rushford sites so much?

Seriously though, that looks like a public camping site to the west of runway? Certainly can't overfly that unless closed for event, which might upset locals.

I expect that the distance from the taxiway to the beginning of that site is about 2000 feet, 600+ meters...
Might be far enough away to not be an issue?

Dave, a couple years ago for one of our jet flys we were curious how far down the runway we were actually flying. From the taxiway we went down to approx were the wind sock is (Halfway down the runway from the taxiway)or there abouts. We watched a few flights and it was interesting to find that only a coupe times did anyone fly further down the runway. When we flyat Tecumseh we stand at the throat of the taxiway to the runway. The wind socklooks close but its futher down than it appears. If you get a chance to fly there maybe you can get someone to go over to the campground and see how close you get, I'm thinking it won't be an issue..
