James,
It looks like the Apache kit has been upgraded (I like it) from the older Ohio RC kit. Ribs and u/c blocks look stronger! Don't know if you mentioned if you are building the two piece wing? Thanks for the photos, hope to see the rest of your build.
I have read not to use the spark plug (Chinese) that comes with the DLE 35, use the Japanese NGK CM6. And check the advance timing, should be 28 degrees.
Bogbeagle, thank you for your explanation on the washout. I want the plane to be neutral as much as possible for aerobatics. Sounds like I will be ok and probably not that adverse.
Any comments on aerobatics would be appreciated. Rick[8D]

Spotted this today

The plans say version 3.0. The u/c looks really strong.
I have gone for the 2-piece wing for storage and transport.
I already have the NGK plugs but I will be sure to check the ignition timing.
Been working on the ailerons / flaps today, pics to follow.

James, thank you for the link. I see the kits are offered in a clipped wing version (version 3?) and the ws is about 73 to 74 inches. Looks like they only offer the clipped wing versions now? Is yours the clipped wing? Are your wings done enough to attach to the fuse? and how do you like the 2 piece wing? Looking forward to your build. Glad you have the NGK plugs. Hope to hear how you like the DLE 35. My kit is the 81" ws version by Ohio r/c. Enjoy your photos. Rick

Hi Rick, this is the first I've seen of the clipped wing. My "Version 3.0" fuselage plan is hand drawn and has slight modifications. The wings are on a separate cad drawn plan without version.
My kit has 81" wingspan. I still have work to do before the wings are ready for seating. The 2 piece wing seems well designed and strong enough but as I haven't built that part yet, I can't judge.
How long have you had your Ohio kit? Do they still make them?

My ws is 81" same as yours but not 2 piece and yours looks very strong and well built. I have an Ohio RC kit and a "precision cut kit " Pepsi Chipmunk already built that I bought from a fellow modeler. The built one I have had for about 5-6 years. The wing has a bad warp that I have tried to remove without success. The eng is a Brisson 2.4 40cc that dead sticked on the 2nd flight and damaged the u/c. I want to build another wing for it buy haven't started yet. Ohio does not make it anymore, it was bought an produced now by Precision
Cut Kits. Rick

Hi! All

I've been building a ohio model chipmunk for the past year off & on it was a pepsi model but i changed the vertical stab and now its a super chipmunk. I'm almost at the point to balance my plane i was hopping some of you guy that have this model or one like it could tell me what your model's weight.

I have a DLE 30 and i also built in flaps

How did you get on with balancing C of G Rick?

I've been blogging here- let me know if the link is broken.

Edit- Enter site. The build is in "Tales from the workshop" then "Pepsi Super Chipmunk"

James,
Went to the link provided and I hope to follow it. Are you the "cookie monster"? I tried to email photos to you but you need to be a member and the moderator won't allow any new members per the message I received. With the 40cc motor I made some adjustments for the cg. I don't remember what the plans cg is but mine is 123mm and that seemed about right. Keep in mind that I only have two flights on the plane as I had a dead stick on the second flight with the new eng.
I set up the rudder with pull-pull and the servo is inside the fuse, behind the wing saddle. I didn't like the rudder servo mounted at the tailwheel. This looks cleaner to me. If you send me your email I'll send you photos of the rudder servo set up I used. RCU's photos are not working at this time. Rick

The bulkhead is epoxied in but only now that I have my tail linkages sorted. I've gone for pull-pull on the rudder and a forked push-rod for the elevators. The push-rod has to be built in early on or it just wouldn't be possible. The rudder cables are in tubes front to back. Anyway, it doesn't look like much but it took long enough.

Nice progress James. Is your pull-pull going to go to the rudder or the tailwheel? I didn't like the tailwheel setup and went to the rudder instead. What transmitter are you using? What's next? Rick

Hi Rick,
I will set up the pull-pull direct to rudder. I haven't worked out exactly how to do the tail-wheel yet.
JR 9 channel sold as the DSX9 in the UK or 9303 in the states. 2.4 GHz
The next stage is to mate the wing with the fus. The wing still needs a little work before I mate it up. I'm not 100% happy with how the two pieces are connecting. That and not having the tips shaped should give me a couple of hours work before I can progress.

I think I will use the Latex KK painting on mine, so what are the two colors used for the red and blue?

Hi acdii, My kit instructions just say dark red and dark blue. The colours are from the American flag so...

Some more pics from my build. I made a plug to dummy the fin/tail-plane so I could sort the pull-pull guides.
BTW I've been unable to post pics for days now. For some reason today is ok

Been flying my Apache Chipmunk a bit, recently. Was out with it, this afternoon and into the evening.

Super-steady and very easy to land.

Saito 1.80 ... pulls like a train.

Pleased with it. Hope that helps to re-invigorate your build.

I understand that the kit was copied from a successful plan. Do any of you know which plan was used? I ask because the wing is a work of art ... so well-behaved ... but the kit, as a whole, is over-built. I wouldn't mind building another model, but lighter.

Hi Guys, Hi Rick,

I haven't been on for a few months but I've made some progress with the Chip. Converted to dual flap servo. Some pics-

James,
Coming along nicely!! Are you getting anxious to finish it? I am enjoying your build. You do such nice work! It looks really good. The eng install looks really good and clean. Let us know how you like the eng isolators (less vibration). You can fine tune the flaps with the two servos. You still have the two piece wing? and your happy with the way it fits and mounts to the fuse? Is that battery in the wing a permanent location? What do you think your all up weight will be? What paint are you using on the fiberglass parts? Are you using the carbon fiber landing gear or piano wire? Keep the photos coming! Nice progress.
bogbeagle, have you been flying your Chippy? Do you have the 81" ws or the clipped wing? I think the new owners of Apache only sell the clipped wing version now? I wonder why? Thanks for the update James! Rick

Hi Rick,
I don't think it will be ready before the end of summer. I still have plenty to do. I am happy with the two-piece wing and will fly it. Some work was required to perfect the joining fit and some filler was needed at the fuse seat. I have no idea about weight or cg yet. I will use dual batteries / switches for Rx and another for ignition. I went to a local automotive paint retailer and purchased etch primer, thinner and acrylic for colour. Kit supplied piano wire u/c. The model has spent a lot of time without work being done but now that it is nearing completion I am more keen to work on it. I wanted to keep as much of the cowl as possible but access and cooling made it necessary to cut all the way. We have been enjoying some excellent weather these past few weeks so I have been flying more than building. I'll post more pics when she's completed.

Hi Guys,
My Chippy had its maiden flight today.
I needed assistance with the gas motor as it is my first and I asked a more experienced pilot to take-off and trim her out for me.
I have the skills to trim a model in flight but I was more concerned about my nerves than anything else. Once trimmed out, I took the controls, flew and landed the model.
Needless to say I am delighted.
She flies really smooth and easy. The DLE 35 has a surprising amount of excess power.
Having no experience of gas motors, the jury is still out on the anti-vibration mounts.
Some pics-

Hi James,
Congratulations on the maiden! The plane looks really nice! Sounds like it fly's just as nice! Let us know your likes about the flight charismatics and changes you make. It looks like you moved the L/G, angled more forward, under the leading edge? Curious to know the weight and how it fly's with that engine? Rick

Thanks Rick,
The L/G was like that with the kit. I wonder if there had been any issues with nosing over.
The engine seems to have too much power but I've only had one flight so I'd need to get back to you on that. As for the weight , I don't own bathroom scales so I'll need to borrow some and find out.
I'll post again with the info.
James
