RE: Enlarged Zirioli Turbinator 125% size
Well the shop is full of Turbinators right now. I installed both stabs this morning and then flipped them upside down and put a bias strip of carbon cloth over the bottom joint as well. Now taking a break until the epoxy cures and believe it or not everything is built except for the main gear covers, I'm waiting until the gear shows up to do that and will start the rest of the fitting of systems after I get back from spring training. Maybe I'll get lucky and get good news today at GPA that my gear has a delivery date from Robart.

Ron,
I found out a couple years ago that pressure treated sawdust was causing me trouble. Now days my sinus' react to all dust some more so than others. the crazy part is body filler still doesn't bother me. I do wear a particle mask when doing body work but I'm still exposed to some dust and it's been nearly forty years. Have fun in Florida and Toledo, sorry I can't be with you. Got my membership card from Farview Flyers, let me know when you think we all can get together and go up for a day or two.

Hey Ron,
The BIG Turbinators look Grrrrreat!!! Sorry to hear that you had to fly south into that fantastic 60+ degree weather!! You are missing this absolutly crappy rain, snow and sleet we had on Monday, and dont forget the wonderful commuting on the Beltway . If you were at BWI on Monday morning, you saw what we had to deal with at work overnight keeping the big guys (737's) flying. Have fun in Florida, see you for Toledo
Hey Bob,
Hamburg sounds good as soon as this winter goes away!!!
Jimmie
PS First in Flight is looking better for me as of last night (Monday)

Jimmie thats great news about FIF for you. My buddy at work Dave Storey just bought a 7 x 12 trailer and he is also picking up a Skymaster Hawk. He has been flying with his buddies in Tenn. the last few weekends and fell in love with it. i'm going to add him to our email list for events. Dave is a natural on the sticks and is fun to be around. He was the Demo pilot for JR when Steve won the TOC back in 96. I'm leaving town tonight so I got the taste of the strom still in my mouth.

Ron, is Dave the gentleman who came to a club meeting a couple of years ago and gave a show and tell of a full scale plane he was building? Your shop must be tight with the two giant planes assembled at the same time. Does anyone give a volume discount on Monokote, I think you're going to need it. Have you blown up those Tiger plans yet?
Jimmie, good news for FIF, it will be great if we all can make it. What turbine are you guys planning to put on the big turbinators? Mine is still on the back burner till I get some car projects out of the way.
Hope to see you guys soon.

I'm putting my P-120 in mine and the p-70 out of the Reaction in the std one. Jimmie picked up EB's Titan and the 120 out of his Bandit so im not sure which one he will put in.

Ron, it measures 5" x 6" x 11 1/2". It calculates close to 190 OZs. I hope it will give me a 6 - 7 min. flight with fuel for missed approaches. My 180 eats fuel at 20 OZs a minute at full throttle. Are you still going to Toledo? I will be there Saturday.

Thanks Gary, that was my first pull from the molds. I did not take the time on finishing the plug the way it should be done. Spring is coming to soon. I am trying to learn to make molds on smaller parts before I make the molds for my A 10.
Would you know the angle of attack of the wing while sitting on the runway? I have to machine a extension for my nose wheel strut. The wing is setting to negative.

Jeff,
A great use of the space available between those bulkheads! Are you going to run just the one tank plus the UAT, or are you going to plumb in another tank also? I have not decided on a P120 or P160. I would like to glass and paint so the P160 might be a better choice due to the weight increase, but not sure yet. I will consult with Ron before we proceed. His airplane has to be ready for FIF in Wilson, NC, mine can wait for Hamburg Rally later on in the summer

Jimmie,
I am planning on running one tank and a header tank. That should be enough. Gary Baker is running a 160 and he says it is fast. I will probably dial mine back. I don't need the speed and I can save fuel.
I am following a friends advice on glassing. He does a lot of large scale warbirds. I used 3/4 oz cloth and West Systems resin to put the glass down. I fill the weave with Lite weight speckling mixed with water and worked into the weave with 400 wet and dry sand paper. Depending on how good you want the finish determines how many filler coats. I have mine primed and it does not seem like I added a lot of weight. The color paint can add a lot of weight. If your not going to use a spray gun try 2X Rustoleum rattle cans.

Jeff,
I measured mine today. 9 1/8" @ the leading edge and 7 3/8" @ the trailing edge. I used struts I had laying around from other models. Nose strut came off a 1/5th scale P-39 and the mains are from the JMP T-33.

RE: Enlarged Zirioli Turbinator 125% size
Got back on the planes tonight. I got tired of waiting for my Robart electric versions to show up and pressed forward with a set I had laying around in an old Roo. The guys at Robart swore that they would be shipping out the back orders to Great Planes and Horizon right after Toledo. Still no gear but the struts showed up last week. I know I can go direct and get them but why pass up a deal when you can get one because there are no hobby emergencys as my old buddy Eric Baugher would say. Here's some pics of the progress on the gear. I can bond in the wheel well liners in the morning and then start covering the plane. I hope the electric gear shows up in the next two weeks or I have to decide to use the air gear until it does or just hold off on taking it to FIF. The wheels are four inch Robarts on the mains and a BVM three and a half on the nose. Still working out the brakes and need to decide on air on the mains or just one kavan electric one on the nose.

RE: Enlarged Zirioli Turbinator 125% size
Well the gear has yet to show up, so I went back to finishing the last detail. I built up the leading edge fairing to match the fuse. Just used some 1/8 balsa sheet for the sides and them some 3/8 square to fill in behind to the wing surface. Finished it off with some light spakle to blend in the last bits. I also filled in the last 4 inches of the bottom for the aluminum sheet to have something to attach to at the back. If I can just get some free time to cover it we might fly it right after FIF I just don't see having the gear in time to have it ready in time. I don't like rushing at the end and forget something important.

Well as usual the Robart gear is very late but finally here. Will finish the install this week and then off to the races covering the plane. Will post pictures when possible.

Yes a big job for one plane, Jimmie has our buddy Bob Frantz lined up to paint his when it is ready to go to paint. I'm still deciding on weather to paint or monocote it.

RE: Enlarged Zirioli Turbinator 125% size
Well, after weeks no make that months of delays in shipping my Robart retracts finally were shipped. They sure are nice but the wait took the drive out of me to get it covered. I will never ever start another plane unless I have everything before I start. I got the gear in tonight and cut the nose strut to length for proper ground angle with full tanks. I used 16 lbs of water jugs on the CG to simulate the engine and the rest if the equipment along with a gallon or so of fuel for takeoff. It will sit level or slightly nose down which is good for no having it takeoff to soon or hop on landing. Now the real work starts to cover the beast. I also cutout and fitted the cockpit floor so the pilot I picked up when visting Nick in Fl. fits under the canopy. Pictures to follow and hopefully we get to fly them by the end of summer. Got really busy at work also building a lot of UAV's this spring and summer. Nick has been up for two months helping me at work and it would be nice for him to see it fly for the first time.
