thank you Dave.

Actually there is a 50x100x3mm piece for the rudder shield which matches exactly with what is described in the manual. It is coated with epoxy or resin or something clear and shiny anyway.

ok I think the thin sheet of plywood "E" is used to laminate the sides of the 10mm thick blocks used for the main gear door attachment and the front gear door spacer.

I am still confused about "A", though. Not sure what you mean by "lip for the gear door-shut"?

Jeremy,

I've only built a classic flash but the only use I can see from the manual for the thin flimsy ply is during the construction of the blocks that attach to the gear legs and hold the gear covers in place (in conjunction with the 10mm balsa block). It is mentioned in the manual under the heading 'Main Gear Doors'.

I'm not sure how many people bother to fit these; I certainly didn't.

siclick,

Thanks I was just reading through manual again and came to the same conclusion about the thin plywood.

Still confused about the clear fiberglass strip, though.

Page 21 of the manual, under 'Nosegear'.

The manual calls for you to make a U shape with it to centre the nose gear as it retracts. I didn't do this but did have to set up the noseleg very carefully to make sure it didn't get stuck up. Hopefully someone else can tell you if the U shaped guide helps.

You can also use it as a stop for the nosegear door. You can just about see it on the photo at the very top of page 21 (above the photos showing the U shaped guide). The strip can be glued to the inside of the fuselage, sticking out just a little, and sanded so that it only sticks out a couple of mm. This just stops the nose door closing too far.

As Darren says, it stops the nose door going inside the fuselage when it closes. I leave approx 3/32" showing (depends on your nose door clearance)
I face each side of the nose balsa block and hollow it slightly to help the block stay centralised running up the leg as it retracts.

There are often quite a few added bits included in CARF kits as they realise people have various ways of achieving the same thing.

Hey guys, what size magnets are you using to hold the canopy while gluing
to the frame?

I don't do it that way, I tack with ZAP20 and O Kicker (does not blush the glass) You would need electric motor type Neodymium magnets to do it your way.

I think E is two pieces of wood. They may be the same size as the motor rails. It's been a long time since I built mine.

Edit. I laminated the two pieces E to the balsa block C and this was used to make spacers for the main gear doors and the nose gear door. On the nose gear door it keep the door from getting caught on the strut when dropping the gear.

Down side is I now have 5 canopy glasses to fit []

Thanks quist. I eventually ended up at the same conclusion. Not a big deal, but what exactly is the point of laminating block C on both sides with E. Mind you, I am brand new to jets and airplanes and come from the Heli world so building is very different.

Don't worry - the UF will not be flown until probably next year, once I get very comfortable with my HABU 32. Planes seemed boring compared to Helis, but Jets...well that's a different story! I became ADDICTED once I started flying the Habu 2 foamy and am also building the Eflite Phantom 32.

Thanks,

Jeremy

Laminating will keep the balsa from splitting.

I maidened my pinky UF on Friday at Classic Jets and got 5 flights in. Put another 6 on it today and have to say it's fantastic! P180RX means it's quite quick Seemed very happy operating out of my home grass strip today.

Andrew, what's your timer set at? I'm debating between a 180 or 140. Was set on using a 140rx, but that engine now looks like a crush Coke can. []

Lol - have to admit I made some messes on Friday[:@]. Played with some settings and all good today.

Dantley - I'm now at 7.30 on my timer. I fly a mix of aerobatic and fast stuff so end up off the throttle a lot but still wind it up for the odd lap.

Thanks Andrew. Now I'm leaning towards a 180... have to buy a new engine, so might as well go with the 180.

It's stunning how tough the plane is (as my first 'selection' of landings on Friday proved). But with the 180 I'm not on the hammer all the time and with the full bypass in, it carries energy really well, so I don't have to be on the power all that much. I suspect this makes it pretty good on fuel.

Mr Bird, there will be no more invites to Mass in Hertfordshire for you. Have you arranged a working party for 'the local grass site' to insert the divots? - I'd hate to get my stick stuck in one of your creations.
