Default Taxes on Internet sales

When (not if) our Tax and Spend leaders require online sellers to collect sales tax what is going to happend with Chinese sellers? I'm betting that US sellers will be eliminated to only the huge ones. I also think that places like Hobby King will close their US Wharehouses. Any thoughts?

The chicoms have been skirting US trade law for decades. I'm sure they will try to side-step it somehow if it ever becomes "law"

I hope they do.
I just got a prescription filled at Costco for $8.30. Wall mart wanted $53 and Wallgreens wanted $63. Some local stores have insane profit margins.

I hope they realize that every dollar in new taxes will mean people will spend less, i I know if I start getting hammered on more purchases online, I will just not spend as much... Somethings can't be avoided others will be.

No big deal if HK closes their USA warehouse, but what if Tower, Horizon and other US businesses do the same and ship only from their "off shore" warehouses? Another dagger in the heart of American business.

I believe it is there intent, at least according to there own words. The great one has said in speaches back in 96-98 that we are to rich, to powerfull, and don't deserve the wealth this country has. The intent is to collapse the system. Capitalism is on its way out, socialism is the replacement.

The report that I saw on the tube about this the other day was interesting. A real to life politician said that collecting the sales tax would make an unlevel playing field for those that do not have brick and mortar outlets. He must have been on drugs at the time, but that is what he said. We may end up with it, but there is at least one that thinks it wouldn't be fair to the small businesses.

When they tried this last year, the TV talking heads said, technically when you sell your used lawnmower (or anything else) to your neighbor you're supposed to collect and forward sales tax to the state,, basically any transaction made in this country should be taxed including Barter deals.

Anyone got some Indian costumes and boxes of tea?

If they could only spend less they could Tax less,,, why is this so hard to figure out once you're "elected"

All bureaucrats, public and private sector, only want to protect and grow their own little world.

We need to get back to true citizen legislators, not career politicians. Congress used to meet part-time, just in the summer. Think of the salaries saved on not only congress but the clerks, lawyers, etc. We should petition a ballot proposal for Washington to cut spending 10% across the board, not just the Medicare/Medicaid, air traffic control, hi-vis items. Congressional pay is first. Most of them are millionaires.

Also should ban any lobbyists from a 50-mile radius around DC.

I know it won't happen, but just maybe...,

Eddie, nice to see someone else knows there history as well. Being so you probably know as well as I which road we are headed down. This administration has manyviews or ideas that have been repeated throughout history such as, Marx, Stalin, Lenon, Hitler, just to name a few.

Live Wire -

I agree with you! I hate taxes more than anyone! But how is the local mainstreet merchant supposed to compete with "free shipping and no tax". Perhaps we should consider a nationwide ban on state sales tax instead.

If it continues like it is now, it won't be long before all local retail dies and we will be forced to mail order everything from China.

Had a hobbyshop myself but no more!

WhatI think would be fair is if every online vendor would charge the same tax that you would pay if you was walk into their store in person, I would bet in short
order many online vendors would begain to process orders from the states with no sale tax or low taxes alsoI think of shore vendors should have to collect a
federal sales tax.

Although it's not enforced when a resident of one state goes to another state and makes a purchase they are supposed to pay taxes on the item purchased
when they return at least thats what calif would like. IMO that would be so wrong and would amount to double tax also all states benefit from out of state
visitors spending in their states.

This has been the problem all along How are you going you get online vendors to collect City, State and Federal and all these other taxes. It will never be enforced, just like a lot of other laws that we have that only apply too the few[:@]
Oh Yes I forgot, Here we have to pay taxes buy Law or loose every thing[:@]

If this was the case, anyone that was going to sell something, couldn't do it unless they had a permit from the State to collect sales tax.
This is how it is/was in Minnesota.

Oldrookie - Just had to say we used to live in Savage before we came to OK. In fact we still have the same snow shovel we brought with us 18 years ago.

i agree it may be nearly impossible to enforce. How can the state of Alabama enfoce a law on a citizen of Iowa? Would Alabama send an auditor to Iowa to check the merchants records?

However, if we all want the convenience of being able to shop locally, something must be done to level the field. Local merchants are usually happy to compete on price but most customers will order online to save the tax. Thanks to the internet the merchants are usually working on very small margins, sometimes under 10% on items over $100.

i once offerd to sell a customer a new DLE engine in my store at my cost. He refused and ordered online to save the tax.

hookedonrc,

I work in Savage at Continental Machines, and live in Prior Lake.
You would have gotten some serious use out of that snow shovel this year. It snowed Monday of this week. Ridiculous winter, even for Minnesota.
Minnesota Nice has taken a back seat to Minnesota Crabby.
