Today we had SUCCESS! Its still a bit nose heavy and there are a few bugs to work out, but other than that, it flew extremely well and came down and home in one piece! Very relieved and happy at this point as this has been a very frustrating project! One down, one to go!
The bugs:
The nose gear didn't get all the way up in the well, which caused a gear door hinge to crack when the doors closed... gotta fix this again. Its odd though, as today was the first time the nose gear has never gone up completely, i've got to look into seeing if i can program the door sequencer delay to a longer delay time.
The second and last bug, is the lack of steering. With 19lbs of weight on the nose gear and a 8711 servo for steering (yes an 8711!) the model still has very limited steering on the ground. Its currently got a 4-40 pull-pull setup and I know the cables have stretched since install.
Anyone have any suggestions on a pull-pull arrangement that won't stretch?
Here's a video, I forgot to turn the auto-focus off so you'll have to excuse the lack of model in the screen at times, we didn't have any other camera's to use as we decided to pick a day where the local crowd wouldn't be at the field asking questions.

You can get it as a Sullivan product, either a pull-pull kit or just the kevlar cable. I get mine from the Evil Empire ( Tower Hobbies ).
Good work on this thing, it's a fascinating aircraft.

For those going to Warbirds over Delaware, we hope to have a short kit there for sale... Unless someone wants one sooner then.. any takers?
Also, would anyone be more interested in a short kit if we were able to include laser cut wing ribs, drag rudder parts and sheetings jigs?

Another successful flight on the horten today. Still some growing pains with the steering (the steering servo ripped through its mount), but its flying well.
I removed 2oz of lead from the nose since the last flight. The trim was set at 56% on the last flight, this flight it was reduced to 40%. It appeared noticeable faster to both myself and Tom.
The takeoff roll was still really long, a good 600-700' and full up elevator before it finally got off the ground (missing the seeding corn stalks by no more than a few inches. Keeping the thing going straight down the runway is near impossible with the lack of steering, im going to replace the mount/battery plate with some 1/4" aircraft ply (its lite ply now) and probably run a carbon plate doubler as well.
I also rolled it for the first time! Its roll rate was pretty quick considering its size. It wasnt very axial due to the frise elevons, but it had no problem getting completely through the roll.
I also attempted to get it to stall. I say attempted bc i took it up nice and high and pulled the power back to idle and just kept pulling back on the elevator until i had max deflection in. The thing never did stall, it just kept flying forward in a decent and roll control was still very effective.
So, steering is still a problem, gear door issues are fixed as well.
Im pretty sure its still pretty far nose heavy. The 19" aft from the LE at the centerline is just the 82" plans cg increased 150%. I ran a cg calc last night based on the wing planform and it specified 20 1/2" aft.
Unfortunately no video as i forgot the camera.
When i get back home from my trip, ill fix the steering mount, and we will try again. I have already removed 2oz of lead for the next flight which should put the CG af 19.1". A little at a time as there is still 10-12oz of lead in the nose.

Flights #4 and 5 were completed successfully today. I removed 2oz of lead for flight #4. Other than a gear door coming off in flight due to a broken hinge (still not sure why the hinge was broken, as the nose gear was fully up when the doors close... weird). Otherwise, not allot of change noticed with the nose weight removed. I did replace the steering servo/battery mount plate with a 1/4" aircraft ply plate. Ground steering is greatly improved and its issues finally (hopefully) fixed..
Flight #5 involved remove 3oz of weight from the nose. I feel this made a much better improvement in handling than previous weight removal's. It got off the ground quicker, and elevator authority felt better during the landing flare. This could be wrong, as there was a significant headwind as well.

I finished up the second pair of cannon barrells today. Now i just need to add the weld details to the suppresor ends and do some paintwork to them.
We also got Tom's completely painted. Other than some dirty washes (which he is doing at home) it is done. Here is a photo of both of them out i the daylight
