Thanks Mark.
I agree completely, I might have Anne towards that end while I make a few laps.
I need to also find out if the "lake" is active...

I will also sketch out a plan b to see what we need to do to be on the west...

Default RE: MN jet rally 2013 - new site?

A few updates after speaking with our sponsor down at the airport.

1. The lake and campsite are active so I dont think we should overlfy that area.

2. We can setup on the West side but it will need to be North enough to clear the hangar area.

3. The entrance to the airport can be blocked so that we can fly to the East. I looked into the historical weather which suggests South wind at 10mph as an average for August in New Hampton.

4. Hangar space is likely

5. The airport can mow a spot for us on the west side for parking and pits etc.

6. The airport can be closed for the event, no funding issues...

I am heading down this weekend to take a look at the asphalt and location first hand. I think that we have a great opportunity here although we have a few thigns to do to make it work on the property. We are very lucky to also have the RC group there happy to help us. Jerry, I also asked about a fire Sat night...

I am thinking that being mid runway or just a bit North of middle will give us the best layout on the field to avoid everything including the hangar.

Again, there is not much else there so where we setup is not such a big deal. Just a walk/ride from the hangar once a day...

I think facing East will be safe and allow a lot of flying.

Flying before noon? What? Huh?
What is this mythical thing you speak of?
Never heard of it... must be an Internet Urban Myth or something... clearly doesn't exist...

Dave, All looks good, and quite promising.

Ok, Just back from visiting New Hampton, IA and Cresco, IA municipal airports.

New Hampton
The runway is well used and has many cracks that are filled and have relatively small steps. The are a few depression along the centerline that could hold some water or make for a slight bump. I found an area about 50-60% North on the runway that has several landing light lengths worth of pretty flat asphalt. The guys from the local club met me there and we reviewed som options for setup- would be similar to Rushford:

Park on grass off runway, on West side - there is about 90-100 feet to park and setup back from the runway. They can mow it all short for us there. Spectators visit from behind us or may view from the park.
The hangar and area south will be vacant for our event. If we wish to avoid it completely, the 50-60% North position puts it pretty far away: See pictures.
It is not quite as smooth as Rushford but we will have the place to ourselves, no issues, flying over corn and nothing else. We are likely to have a " South" wind but I expect it will be 30-45 cross. We will look East, so flying late is now problem.
I think we can still have our evening fire too, have to confirm a few things. Hangars are old, some concrete, some pebble floors but should work for us.

Next was Cresco Iowa, Ellen Church Field.
Great runway and taxiway. Concrete is good and gaps are sealed. We will face W...not the best. Note sure about the ok to use this one yet anyway...Pictures to follow.

With the area closed for us, we could really have fun and not worry about traffic and other things. It would be nice to try and get a few more pilots to attend from IA, SD, ND, MO, WI and moving this a lithe South helps with a slightly more central location - anyone reading this from IA? Please come this year !

Grass field in Rochester is still an option too.

I would like to get a sense from everybody if New Hampton looks ok?

There is a tractor pull area to the SE of the hangar but it is used only in July - will be empty for our event.

Glad to hear it!

I think we are going to go ahead with plans for New Hampton although we have a few details to iron out.

Reservations would be a good idea though, the Super 8 was holding ten rooms for us, you might want to mention the "jet rally at the airport.."

I think this will work here pretty well, not the smoothest runway but it should be quite reasonable.

I will update the www.http://mnjets.info site shortly, I realize the name may be confusing but I don't plan to change the mnjets.info yet.., that site will stay the same.

While we have a few thing to finalize, you might want to call and check about a reservation - they started by setting set aside 10 rooms for us, about half with two queen beds if you want to share.

The Super 8 in New Hampton has offered us a 15% discount for the event.
While it is early to book a room, they can be reached at 641-394-3838 , ask for Brad or Amy.
Dates are 8/21-25. They mentioned that Saturday was beginning to fill up...

REgarding 8/21. We usually are setting up, maybe flying in the afternoon/evening. Since we anticipate a closed runway, our ability to fly anytime 8/21-25 should be wide open.

Dave,
Looks awesome as far as I'm concerned.

I've a monkey wrench for this one year, as I'll be in Switzerland, at the Jet World Masters from Aug 19 through Sept 6. This is a one off type of thing, so the site and dates look great for us, for all the subsequent years.
Wish I could be at two places at once......

Thanks again for all the work... excited that the event will continue and at what looks like a great place to go flying at too...

Hi Lance,

Ok, well I will see you in NE at least.

Sorry you will miss it, I hope Jerry can still make it. You can send the SR71 along with him and we will exercise it a bit!

Sucks being Lance. I've already made reservations! Will bring the SR-71 in tow. Everyone gets a lap on it. My treat.

I have had a few messages regarding some new attendees this year. We certainyl would like to try and have a good turnout, especially from around our surrounding states. I hope thos who have loked at this event in the past will consider it this year.

IF we do indeed have a completely closed (city owned) airport, we will have lots of room and time to fly!

Dave
