RE: 2013 Bakersfield 2nd Annual Pattern Bash
Chip,
Thank you for such an awesome event! Jennifer and I want to thank you for making us feel welcome. I know how much effort goes into something like this, and all of your hard work is appreciated. The contest was well run, the demos were top notch and the atmosphere was truly a great time. Congrats, and we are already making it a priority for next year.

Flew like crap, got roasted by the sun, and had a great time doing it!! Looking forward to next year!! Practice and more sunscreen is my prescription in the meantime!
Good to meet a lot of folks that I only knew through the Internet and to reconnect with some that I had not seen in awhile. What could be better?? The Old School pattern was amazing to watch. Did we really fly those planes?? Kind of like watching a movie from when you were in high school or something.
And thanks to the Bear Mountain club for once again being the gracious and hospitable host club!!
Oh, and that guy Chip what's his name did a great job too

Hey Chip
I would like to second what Steve and Fish stated, Great Job!!!. An for those that missed this great event "Shame On You". Guys we had 3 days of great weather with the temp's in the high 80's
and low 90's, so between the AMA pattern and Classic pattern we had 59 pilots, the biggest so for the year, and if chip is not exhausted, I sure am. I would like to send out a big thank you to
Gordon, Rex and the young lady from the Bear Valley Flyers club for the scoring duties, An to Bryant Herbert, Brain Clemmons and Robert Green for coming out to So Cal, and Congrats to John
Bently, for winning the BJ Craft Nuance pattern ship, and thanks to all those sponsors that Chip was able to put together.
I'm sorry about not having any scores, and maybe someone could post them, because the printer died just before the final scores could be printed. But I do have photos, so enjoy.

Great event, Chip! Hands down... the best event on the west coast by far... I bet that next year we'll have 70 pilots competing! What did we have last year - 46? This year 59... next year? Rarebear racing was a hoot - even though I didn't even make the grid. The "Expert" class was a HIT and definitely helped breaking up the HUGE Masters class that we normally would get.
I can't wait for next year!
BTW, thanks to Bryan Hebert (Louisiana), Brian Clemmons (Louisiana), Robert Green (Nebraska), Mike Caglia (Utah), Rex Lesher (Oregon) and Gordon Anderson (Washington) for coming to play with us.

In the photos, the Gaudius without a nose is mine. I thought I'd better comment on it because there are a couple of lessons to be learned.
Lesson 1:
If your airplane is acting erratic, land. On my first flight on Saturday which was my third flight of the contest which was Round 4 for me, I had some major flaws, one so bad on the Top Hat that I went around and did it again. I was having some trouble seeing it in the haze which really scatters the sunlight, and so I blamed it on myself. The format that we used required that we fly again in about twenty minutes so I didn't even discuss it with anyone and took off for flight number two. On the very first pull up for the Half Clover, it did almost the exact thing it had done on the pull up into the Top Hat on the previous flight. My thoughts were clear, don't give up. I blame that on having recently read Seal Team Six. Those guys never give up. The long and short of it was that after a few more bad maneuvers the plane went into a death spiral/spin and impacted the hard desert right on its nose which happens to be a Contra Drive. At that time I figured the radio had quit but still didn't believe my earlier troubles were caused by that and so didn't recognize that I should have landed and found out what was wrong. It is so obvious now.
Lesson 2:
Make sure your wing and stab tubes, including anti rotation tubes are secured so they are not able to move. When we saw the airplane, you could see the horizontal stab on the left side was at some odd ball angle and the the anti rotation tube had migrated into the right stab to the point it was not engaging the left stab. The rear tube was secured to both stabs with small screws designed to keep the stabs from sliding off, but are not designed to keep them from rotating on that tube under heavy loads. I suspect they kept the left stab in rough alignment for awhile but eventually allowed some serious angles of attack in both directions. I'm pretty sure I saw it reverse the spin at least once from about 400 feet.

WOW!! Can't believe it's all over. Another great contest before I move back east. We had so much fun the first two days that we were already worn out by Saturday. Needless to say it will take us several days to recover!
Some highlights of the contest that kept me laughing on my 11 hour drive home:
- Joking with Kirt C. about doing his vertical down four point at full throttle with or community "TEAM ATLANTA" plane.....he did it!!
- Chip flying his Rare Bear under the shade and then under the table while standing on it!
- And all the hilarious mishaps with the Rare Bear racers!!
Jim - Sorry about your stab and the plane. Hopefully you can repair it!
Thanks to Chip and everyone who helped in making this contest so great!

Chip, Thanks for a great contest! You and the club did an outstanding job, and I really had fun. I know this is a huge organizational task and your job was well done. Lets just take the week off next year and have a " West Coast Pattern NATS". Remember the winter NATS in Tucson? I would guess we could get 80-100 competitors. Just a thought.

Oh man, the WInter NATS at Marana!! Brings back some memories. Sky filled with pattern planes and the pylon racing was off the hook. I was still in high school. What a blast!!

RE: 2013 Bakersfield 2nd Annual Pattern Bash
I too want to take a moment and thank Chip, Leon, and the entire Bear Mountain Flyers Club for hosting this event. I most likely will not be able to attend the Nats this year so for me this was my "Nats", and even though I had to leave Saturday night to catch a flight to DC for work, it was a wonderful event that I will fondly remember for a long, long time. Late on Saturday afternoon I made a comment to someone that I believe to be valid and relevant, "This contest has everything you could want in a Pattern Meet. There's lots of pilots and planes, nearly perfect weather, a fantastic facility, and a fun group of people having a really good time!". I will also remember the look on Chip's face when he saw the framed Dr. Jeckyl - Mr. Hyde artwork that we gave him after the totally INSANE Saturday lunchtime Helicopter demo by Kyle, it was just priceless!
It was also really great to see some of the people that I normally only get to see once a year at the Nats. It reminded me that flying pattern would be nothing if not for all the people that are associated with it, that's what the memories are about the people who helped create them with us.
I took a handful of pics of the sunset on Saturday as the evening wound down, hopefully they'll come out on here as they were the perfect ending to a perfect contest day for me. Thanks Everybody!

Jerry,
You are absolutely right.
This is the closest to the NATS that I can get this year as well (like every other year, it is extremely tough for me to fit in the time required). It was really a special event for me. My work schedule doesn't allow much wiggle room for things but this was a really fun time.
And that sunset on Saturday was spectacular.
