RE: Epic Journey
Pat,
I've never been one that needed all the top-shelf stuff, so unless someone is donating that plate to the cause, I'll stick with the plywood core version lol. Thanks for the link.

RE: Epic Journey
Here's some pics of it all assembled. And I had to let my friend/caller get a pull on it just to see his reaction lol. Dave was in pure concentration mode until he handed back the transmitter.
No graphics cause I'm not sure where to put them. On the old scheme it was pretty easy to figure it out, but haven't on this yet. Oh well, still have some time.

RE: Epic Journey
Jason could you take a tape measure around the highest and thickest point of the fuse and measure the girth?
The Spark Dynamic is the largest I've even seen at 36 inches. The Nuance/ Prolog is pretty big at about 35"'s.
Sometimes looks can be deceiving. Thanks in advance, Mike Mueller
BTW nice looking plane.

RE: Epic Journey
Doug, when the plug was cut there was some discussion that it was too big and to make it smaller. I assured Marcelo that it would be fine the way it is (crossing my fingers the whole time). After flying it, I wouldn't have it any other way.
Thanks Bill.
Tommy, the RCACF field is a great site (even though we have to watch out for the expressway on the North side of the field) and the club members are 2nd to none (aren't all our clubs that way ). Plus we have a nice mix of pattern guys, pylons guys (former WC and Team members), glider Team member and rumor is a past heli Team member, now enjoying his past pattern roots, (and his Bootlegger is BEAUTIFUL!!!) is going to join.
Jeff, this is even a bit different from the original Epic... guess this makes it a V2 Epic lol. Still think I'm gonna frame a few things from the drawings and try them out. Thanks again!
Mike, thanks and my 'Beluga' is 38" around [X(]
Thanks Cris. I am very happy with the plane, and the more I fly it and get used to it the better it gets. I have about 25 flights on it now and am pretty close to having it just the way I want it. Just doing some T-can testing now so doing some changes to get the same feel as when it is off. Next is a few more flights with different props and then get some parts cut and my Contra goes in it for a new batch of testing. It looks pretty big at 150 though lol.
Thanks Bill.

38 inches. Wow!!!! That's huge!
Dick Hanson used to always comment on how large fuses doesn't effect speed as much as the airfoil. I'm no expert I've always thought its a combination. The large fuse planes today virtually fly on their sides without a lot of rudder. Mike

RE: Epic Journey
There's alot of Red, White and Black in that scheme...could be the T&T influence!!
I'd really like to know how the T affects this design and how big/small you need for it to be effective without hurting performance.
Colin.

RE: Epic Journey
LOL, even Dave commented on that the first time I showed him that scheme Colin. It was conceived from a plane my dad had when I was 3, a TF Contender, done in Red/White/Black. I've always liked the colors so I drew this up using them. I was a little hesitant about changing from my usual colors, but I bit the bullet on my Xurama. When I unpacked it I couldn't assemble it fast enough to see how it turned out. Well, needless to say, I gave Marcelo the go-ahead to make the Epic the same way. Besides, this scheme with all my old colors just didn't flow the same as past schemes did.
I have 2 flights with the T (forgot my APC at home when I flew it the 1st time and the cg was too far back to gauge performance), but did manage to borrow an APC 21x14 to do a 2nd flight and was impressed with the increase of rudder authority. I'll be getting the CG correct before trying it again, but was glad the my T that I've had since the Integral just bolted right on and only required 2 clicks of down trim from without it.
Once I ask the owner of the other finished Epic if I can post pics of his I'll get them up here.

RE: Epic Journey
Sadly Joe, that's not really the case. I have a Xurama that I got mid-December that still only needs a firewall made and pushrods glued in. But the Epic is a bit more personal to me so that's why it was done so fast. But I did have it a week before my post of the box. I gave it to my builder friend to do the hinging for me and then started working on it. Also had to make the firewall so that took sometime. After I said that I got it my phone blew up (hence the reason for not saying anything right away lol). But I am so glad and happy about the way the Epic has turned out. I won't be at Muncie as the Worlds are too close and I'm saving my pennies for that.

Yeah I didn't realize the Worlds and Nats were always so close together. Maybe next year.
Still seems pretty quick to me - either way, I enjoy following your progress
I start my Integral on Sunday. Probably only working on weekends but hopefully I will leverage what I've learned from you and get it done quick.

RE: Epic Journey
By the 4th Integral, Ryan and I had it down to starting on Friday night and flying on Sunday before the sun went down. I'm sure you'll be fine regardless of where you build it
Here are a few pics of Epic #2 (or 3). Owner Ney Mancheno is patiently awaiting it's arrival. Marcelo test flew it when it was completed.

RE: Epic Journey
Jas,
Thanks for the info on the back groung of the epic. When I saw it at Victor's rib fest I knew it was something I had to have. I have always liked the delcro opium, and well the Epic was it in many ways but it had everything that it did not. I know that I am new in pattern but I feel like the epic fits me and I can"t wait till mine shows up in three weeks. I will shut down KMF and turn off all phones and build it. Thanks so much for letting me use your graphics and change the colors to make it my own. once I get it and built I ll drive down and see you.
Thanks again
