RE: Top Flite '.60 size' P-51D Mustang ARF: Building & Modifications
My left gear ripped out on a soft landing with mine and busted out the leading edge of the wing. When I got it home and started to repair it I see why it happened. The gear mounting plate was just tack glued to the ribs with some weird looking glue. NO triangle stock to support the plate or anything. It really pays to build it yourself. Now that I fixed it, it is how the kit is built.

Bob, that K&B is one of my favorite 2c glow engines. They just go and go with a sweet idle.
Yeah, I was looking at the gear unpacking everything and I see why everyone is upgrading the retracts. I ordered 3.5 robart wheels and noticed the kit is supplied with 3.25's ... hope they fit.
I was looking at the Lado's as an option.... Did you go with the RS333's at 90 deg? My next P-51 is the ESM which is 1/6th scale... so I am wanting to get a set that will work with both (planing ahead) with only a strut change.
The YS 1.20 looks like it will fit nice ....

Does anyone know the difference in the Robart 511RSE and the 591E retract units. The 511E's are more expensive but on sale.

My take on them is that the 511RSE are the standard electric retract unit and will take a 3/8 strut or a 3/16 wire. The 591E are the Progressive Retract, they operate in a more scale fashion and only work with the 3/8 strut. That is a good price for them. Shame, I just spentmy monthly hobby budget on 2 new recievers and an engine.

Ordered this last night to try on the flaps.
A fully adjustable 3 channel-out Servo Regulator which can be used on any receiver channel and will increase the servo travel time, direction and duration. Great for scale model retracts flaps and canopies where scale detail and flight characteristics are important. No more cartoon like landing gear or flap action.
Weight: 3g
Input: 1 servo Channel.
Output: 3 Channels.
Options: Travel Speed & Travel Time in both directions.

Thanks for the heads up on that device. I've been wanting one for a while but they were always out of stock. My buddy uses one on the flaps on his giant scale P-51.

Robart Gear selections - this is what I found out (for anyone that cares LOL)
The 511 and 591 are about the same. The 590 or 591 as a "progressive" means that it can be purchased as a mechanical then easily upgraded to electric or air (or switched).
THe 551 is a heavier duty unit with a bigger price. IT will hanle up to about 24lbs such as the ESM P51 or the H9 150. It will take both the TF 3/8 strut and the larger 7/16 strut.
All the electric gear and the conversion comes with the card to run an aux battery and delay the sequencing

Almost have the parts to finish this bird.
Flaps ; Hitec 545's I had new with a Turnigy speed reg
Elev & Aorerons: Futaba 9402's
Rudder: Fut 3305
Throttle 3301
Still need:
Gear looks like the 551RSE Robart eletric w sequencing board /struts and 3.5" wheels
2 batteries - haven't decided but the LiFe looks like best option
Solo prop 17" - 4 blade for that just needs a little more running in before mounting.

Another retract failure to report. On my first landing of the day, a very normal landing on grass and the left retract collapsed. Upon inspection I found that the mounting rail split right thru the screw holes. You would think they would have used 1/4 ply for that high stress area. Instead, they cheaped out and used a plain piece of hardwood. I wonder how much money they saved?

Thats unfortunate... thanks for the heads up. I am just starting mine.... work has had me stretched out. I did look at those rails and had though about wrapping then with glass/epoxy.
STILL trying to decide on gear. Like the Sierra struts... but no answer to email or answer the phone from them. really like the Robart electric but dont like the plastic struts. The ESM V3 are my fav although dont know if the struct can be shortened. They are for 1/6th scale... this one is a 1/7th scale plane. decisions decisions

Wow a 17" 4 blade on a 1.20 FS sounds a little big to me. I'm using a 17"x 6xoar 2 blade on all my DLE20's and that works well. What pitch are you using?

RE: Top Flite '.60 size' P-51D Mustang ARF: Building & Modifications
I got a Biella 16-8 four blade at a garage sale. Cheap as in almost free. I tried it on the DLE 20 in the Mustang. Only turned 4,000 to 4,500 rpm. Looks great static though. Way too much prop. Master Airscrew two blade 16-8 works great. About 8,500 rpm. Plenty of power.

WOW ... that WAS a garage sale find!!!
The quest for a 3.25 or 3.5" aluminum scale wheel has proven difficult. So started playing with some flight metal on the Robart wheel... jury is still out .. will take some time to get finished to see if it will work well and look good.

Hey Guys
I have a silly Question I would like to ask. I have just gotten to the point where I have glued the scoop to the bottom of the wing. Now when I take the wing off how am I going to get the wing screws back into the wing. The scoop is a lot deeper than the screws. I don't think this is a big problem but it has me baffled.
Thanks
Ron

The best option is to leave the bolts in the wing. They will generally stay in place if left. Unscrew them from mounting bolt (don't completely turn them out), remove wing, push them back down. They should be snug enough to stay but loose enough that they don't need to be turned to seat them back in the wing. I’ve been doing it that way for years without having to ask the age old question “Will the wing stay on with just one bolt?†Get some slightly undersized rubber washers for the fuselage side if you want a little insurance against them vanishing.

Thanks I Fly
I was considering doing something like that, but wasn't sure what to use on the screws. Rubber washers should work fine.

o rings also work and they can be left on and not really interfere with attaching the wings.

That's a great idea RotorWing Nut. Sounds like I need to do a retrofit on my wing.

Same here - O rings work so well. I also used old plastic printer rolls (like printing calculator paper roll) as a guide so that the bolts would have a path. Prevents it from falling or tipping inside.

I cut a small hole in the scoop just in case I had toget in there. I also put rubber grommets on the bolts themselves.

I use a small piece of CA hinge material cut like a washer to keep my wingbolts in the wing.

Hey Blue Max
good idea cutting a hole in the back of the scoop. I was getting tired of holding the wing over my head and using hemostats to pull the screws out of the scoop.
