Default RE: Lightning Build

Robert,

I use two basic types of carbonfiber in my build. I use 5.6 oz/ sq yd bi-directional cloth to do most my laminating. I use this laminated to both sides of 1/8" lightply to make my gear plate, and laminated to one side of 1/8" lightply to make the former that ties into the stab tube. On my next airplane I am probably going to use 1/8" regular ply, laminated on both sides, for my gear plate. I havn't had issues on the current airplane with the lightply gear plate, but the one on installed on the prototype had the plys of the wood split apart. For the corbon reinforced fuselage longerons, I used 1/8" lightply, laminated on one side with unidirectional 0.005 carbon on a web binding. I also use the unidirectional carbon, cut into 1/4" strips to reinforce my foam wings.

I have never used net binding, but it does not seem to be as uniform as the web binding. I suspect either would work just fine for the applications we are discussing here.

Thanks for the info. Looks like they carry all that. Didn't realize the laminate was cloth. Will probably use regular ply as you suggest for the gear plate.

Another quick question. Does the orange show up well in the sky? I am planning on using similar colors.

I think the orange shows up great. This is the second plane sinced I switched from red, white, and blue to white, black, and orange and I think it works great.

Robert,

I use the same servos on my elevator, but I can't personally speak for the ones you are using on the ailerons and rudder. The specs look like they should work fine.

Robert,

Those are fairly standard pattern servos. They should work great. I set my wife's Monolog up with that exact setup. Also, used the same setup on the 2m Vanquish.

Thank you all. I'm really a newbie so this plane will be a sportsman on up. So don't want to spend too much but want quality. Hard to do sometimes but I think this will work. Motor will be a Hacker A60-7s V2.

Just trying to get all the parts a head of time before the CFO has time to think about it

Robert

I'm preparing to begin a Lightning of my own. Any chance you could email the plans? I would greatly appreciate it. Kevin

Viper,

I am probably not going to do any future updates to the Lightning design. I know at least one Lightning was built with anheadral in the stab, an it seemed to work fine. The beautiful thing about scratch building is you can make changes to make the airplane what you want it to be.

Kevin,

Check your email.

My Lightning has anhedral in the stab and flies very well. I'm building another right now for my dad that has the canopy moved forward and a mount for plug in canalizer as well. The Lightning is a great platform for poking around with ideas. It's very neutral. It also has the benefit of a great build layout that lets you add/subtract bits and pieces as you go.I encourage everyone to build one!!Guy

"I am probably not going to do any future updates to the Lightning design"

This is very pitty! I thought we could give all our expirience of "Lightningers" togetherin making a V2

But it is like Jeff sad"The beautiful thing about scratch building is you can make changes to make the airplane what you want it to be."

I love my plane!

PS: Could you show as a picture of your modification?
