@Tuskegee, looks great! How was your impression of the build quality once you took the covering off?

Frank, you are probably right...

OK, back on topic @ Volkert.
The constuction that I've seen is pretty good.  I've pranged a few of these and the wings have held up pretty good.  The weak parts that I've noticed are the landing gear areas like most planes.  If you land perfectly then disregard, but I have my days sometimes and an occasional ugly landing.....I know, I'm sure I'm one of the few.....but, I've noticed spongy wood during the autopsy at the leading edge and sometimes not enough epoxy to really hold the LG Bearing ply or formers together.

I'd reinforce that area with sandwiched ply or G10 ribs and maybe glass it etc. or add epoxy with microfibers etc.  Other than that, I haven't had any other issues with the wing construction.  My biggest peave is that they sheeted everything and left a couple bays unsheeted......why?  Weight would be almost negligible.  They should have sheeted the whole thing.

For the fuse a few people have noticed not enough epoxy in and around the firewall which has already been discussed.

Hope that helps.

J

Stick Mode:Your right on that, I always fill the holes. Why they left them open is beyound me. That is not going to lighten this unit that much. But with the ones that are there is helping
me in the point of running my lines for my lights and putting in my hinge points. I was thinking about doing a two piece wing. the tailwheel is better than the one that it came with.

Wagen017: the wing and this unit is put together better than I expected. even in the fuse other than the firewall..that I filled with Hysol. The former I had to take out to fit my cock pit took some dremel time. It isclean down to the fuse.

My pilot did not want to be stuck in his seat so I made his canopy open (and I put him on the table to have leg surgery). His recovery was great. MYFRIEND got on me because I did not have the deck slide with the canopy lol. now if thiswas my STUKA.....
Out of my 17 planes I now have (2) two german units.

I ordered my box muffler from Jtec, and got a spinner from Skyshark (2blade). I will still be looking for the 3 Three.

FW-190 guru's, Sorry to hijack this thread......but considering the reoccurring theme of the adding weight to the nose to get this plane to balance correctly I wanted to share a photo of what I am attempting/doing to solicit your feedback on the potential downside of hanging the batteries on the engine mounts. I constructed a battery box of ply and then screwed it into the mount and will strap the battery to the box with a healthy wrap of foam. Not sure what the engine vibrations will do to the battery, provided it has sufficient padding. Bad or good idea....Thoughts? Thanks, Jonathan

I did pretty much the same thing. So far so good. The wood tray is bolted to the motor mount and then also screwed down against the firewall. Its carrying a lot of weight....two rx batteries, throttle servo, onboard glow unit and about 9oz of lead

Hey there, guys n gal...time to revisit this bird of mine. With the landing gear issues I've had i basically set it aside and let it collect dust vowing to get back to it soon. The day has come.

First thing I did after the second set of WingSpan Retracts bit the dust was tear out the molded wheel wells. My theory on them is I think I burnt the first WSR sets out with all the rubbing and bottoming out within the wells. Goin to finish them with wood instead like this one. You can kinda get the idea I'm trying to accomplish. Amazing craftsmanship in that bird!

Speaking of retracts, the tailwheel will get it's own servo...http://www.troybuiltmodels.com/items...ELRETRACT.html
...and finally got a proper spinner for it...http://www.troybuiltmodels.com/items/MRCSPWAR3BLK.html. The big Tru-Turn I had was way to pointy.

Oh and one more thing...going to convert it over to gas, no more big E set-ups for me...10S (2x5S) packs are too expensive, imho. Looking at a 40cc engine...which one, not sure, yet.

Can't fly a warbird on electrics! I fly my pattern models electric since years, but my FW had to be on fuel. Don't understand your remark on cost of packs though. They don't cost that much any more! Unless you destroy them? I typically run more then 250 cycles out of each pack.

My 5S 5000mAh 45C packs run $160 + shipping for two. Half the cost of a new gasser and the only down time really is me filling the tank. Most of my planes I take to the field are gas soo it just made sense. I can just take my smaller rx charger too. I sold the big 1.60 and CC ESC anyway after it was in one more plane and the packs I had puffed. Thought really hard about the VVRC 40 twin, but a friend of mine is sending me an MVVS 40...same dimensions as the 35. Hopefully it'll fit without too much cowl hacking. Not sure which head is on it though. "It's a surprise".

Got the exposed part of the wells closed in and adding some balsa edging to close the gap between the leg doors and where the molded lexan was. Gonna try a piece of 1/64 ply as an outer skin to overlap. Re-did the door/leg brackets too. Went with a tab type method to secure the new thinner brackets to the doors. Pics soon.

Hacked the motor box/battery tray off with a hack saw. Came off pretty clean considering and the firewall is needing just a little bit of 'glass repair. Missing the two firewall tabs on each side, but the mb/bt is up for grabs if you need it, just pay for shipping.

Removed tailwheel assembly in eager anticipation of the new one to arrive. I don't think I'll need to do much other than install the hardware. No "door" planned, gonna attempt to drop it through the hole scale-like. I think it'll be a rigid set-up, no spring.

Wheel wells partially enclosed with 1/8" balsa and working at adding strips to the edges. Each retract will have a hatch over it as well. Depending on how much gap is left, I might add that 1/64" skin. If I do that, the current doors will get lightened with strategically placed holes.

I dunno about some of you, but my flap servos had a bit of a tough time keeping the flaps closed with all the buzzing in the closed position. Eliminate the buzzing and they didn't close all the way. I know now that the hinges didn't exactly lign up and only found out after when I epoxied them in place. Solution...tiny rare earth magnets keeps them flaps shut!

Revy good choice of motor I have one here in another plane there quite heavy and you will need all the weight forward try using the large battery packs 4300ma placed hard forward to the back of the fire wall i ended up using two one for the RX and one for the on board glow i run the Saito 170r and needed all i could get up front MVVS comes with a normal glow mount so placing it is no drama cunning plan with the rare earth mags cheers Frank

All good. Got a hold of Tomas and have placed my order for a sierra tailwheel. Great service and can't wait to get this awesome product to compliment this beautiful plane. Out of curiosity...has anyone installed this sierra esm fw 190 tailwheel not as a retract? Meaning bypassed or static locked the air retract tube because I plan to install it not as a retract.
