Boulton Paul P111 has flown at last!!
I am delighted to say that the beautiful yellow Boulton Paul has flown at last. Dave Wilde was at the sticks as usual and we had 3 flights and no repairs needed. The only minor problem was the Undercarriage which worked on the ground and refused to cooperate in the air. I think it is just that they are very 'tight' and I will ease the fit of the components and see if I can make it more reliable. The plane was sensitive in pitch like the original and we added more exponential for the second flight. Also the Trim on elevator was working only on the outer surface and that was corrected for the second flight. Roll seemed fine and the plane felt comfortable. It was a little nose heavy and that will be corrected on the next flights. This is a culmination of a very long project started by Alec Cornish Trestrail and taken over by me with help from Ted Gilbert with the painting. The Futaba programming proved quite an ordeal and I must save the settings on a flash card just in case..

Fantastic John...another British classic back in the air! Credit to you for all the work, and Dave did good, as ever...I like his stance during the landing - concentration at its best!
ACT will be proud that yet another of his creations has taken to the air and, of course, no small part was played by The Animal in its initial construction!
Look fwd to seeing it soon John...are you going to Top Gun or Wyton?
Cheers,
Dick

Thanks for the kind remarks, yes we plan to be at Wyton. I will bring either it or the Arado to fly. Though I must say it is so much easier having just the one engine to worry about.
Enrique
I took over a part built project that Alec started and never finished. He made huge moulds for the fuselage which is 1.2m wide at the point where the wheels hinge. There is more detail on

Magnificent John and Dave. Well done on such a complex project. Saw the full size at Farnborough when
I were a lad. Superb.

Thanks everyone for the kind remarks. We were well pleased to come home with no repairs and only the retracts to sort out. I have the plane upside down ready to remove them to work on them. I know the Behotec C50 retracts well and they have been outstanding in other planes I have.
Not sure what to bring to Raydon, but may bring it depends on the weather.

Finally I have some very nice quality photos and video of the Boulton Paul at Wings and Wheels 2013 taken by Peter Coxon.

The day was not without its problems as you will see. The first landing you will see is actually the second one. The gear failed to come down and analysing it afterwards it was caused by one of the U/C doors that came off during the flight bending the door ram and allowing the air from the combined door and U/C system to escape. This is one of the fastest gear up landings of a heavy plane I have seen. The plane is very slippery with the gear up even with the airbrakes out. We were running out of fuel and had no choice but to land. It was a bit like a stone skimming on a pond, but luckily the grass was nice and soft and cut for use as a full size grass strip. There was no damage at all to the plane. Since flying I have split the retracts and door air supplies so it cannot happen again. The second landing shown was in a crosswind for landing and Dave held off putting it down just a shade too long.
We flew twice yesterday at Elvington having replaced the doors and splitting the door and gear supplies with no problems. Also after bending the axles landing at Wings and wheels I changed the axles to high tensile bolts rather than stainless axles.
