Yep, 1.5 is very big. Only plane I ever had with one that big was a 40%. I have a piece of PVC in it making it look longer plus the over hang of the glass. I just gave it another slather of resin and will finish sand it tomorrow. The tube will be 36 inches long when finished. 12 inches go into each wing halve and about 5 inches inside the fuse. Once I get the tube installed I can set the wing incidence and mount them. Then I will finish the wing sheeting and cut out the ailerons. Can't wait to get back to gluing wood but there isn't a lot of that left to do.

That sure is one huge mother of a wing tube.
I think Gene is building in a little insurance"The wing ain't going to fold" no mater what he does to it

Yesterday, today and tomorrow plus the day after I have a lot to do so not able to be in the shop. I did go over to the wood shop and sanded all the little lumps and drips off the new inner tube so it is nice and smooth. By wrapping a couple layers of the parchment paper tightly around the aluminum tube then glassing over the top the wing tube slides smoothly in and out of the glass tube. A perfect fit. I just hate it when the wing tubes stick when trying to get the wings on and off.

I did get home today early enough to get the tubes installed into the wings. Not a lot done but it was something. Took the ladies out to the movie today, Iron Man is OK, nothing to rave about but OK. The ladies liked it so I'm happy with that. They went together last week to a chick flick, according to them, never again?? Tomorrow I have foreman duty at the wood shop then Thursday I have a test at the DR. so I should get back to building on Friday?

Ran into a problem today, my building stand is too narrow to use for setting the wing incidence. The cord is 20.5 inches and my stand is a bit more then that if I remove the foam. It's just PVC so I can get a little PVC tomorrow and lengthen it or just remove the foam and beat up the LE stock when working on it? My shop is showing it's size too, not much room in this small shop compared to my old one, still, it's better then working on the kitchen table and having my mom yelling at me about all the stink and dust.
I decided to install some hardwood end caps on the outside of the last hardwood ribs to keep the wing tube from getting pushed in too much or sliding around. May as well do some minor things until I have what I need to move on.

Hey Gene,
At least with the wing om - it doesn't look like a submarine!
I tell you what though, in those pictures that thing sure looks short coupled. I bet it will chase it's tail really well. (tight loops).

Funny you should mention the Sub thing. Yesterday Sue saw it with the wing on and started laughing??? What?? It still looks like a submarine with wings!!! It is short coupled for it's size but when the tail feathers are on it looks a lot longer.
Due to having to wait in doctors offices waiting to have tests done today all I was able/in the mood for, was installing in the landing gear braces/doublers. These are 1/4 inch hardwood/ply. Yesterday I made a couple of wing tube stops so the tube doesn't slide in or out too far from side to side. Because I mixed up more epoxy then needed I mounted them too.

Hi Brian, here is a don't do this at home thing. About 10 years ago I was doing a step by step build thread. I mixed up a batch of epoxy in a cup, heated it up so it would flow well then decided to look at my watch while holding the cup. Truth!!!

DAS BOOT. I spent my morning getting the wing on and in incidence. Harder then you would think. The tubes I made are just a touch on the snug side so the wings are a bit hard to get on and off. Once I got them incidenced I had to open up the holes for the tabs, wires and screws. I keep sanding the tube a bit every time it is removed. I will try chucking it up in a lathe and sanding it down a bit more when I get the time. When the plane is together I really have a hard time moving around in the little shop.
Still reminds me of a Hots and not a Sub!!!

Finishing the sheeting on the wing before I cut out the ailerons. Big pile of sheeting still to do. I thought I had cut enough until I started sheeting the center section. I may have to make a trip to the hobby shop and buy some more, I'm running out of wood and glue {Sigment}, I found I really like the stuff and haven't been using a lot of CA on this build.

All the guests have left so I got back to work, the wing is now finally sheeted and has the cap strips on. The wing tube has been sanded down and slides through the wings very well. Still don't understand how epoxy shrunk when I installed the inner tube but it must have?
Now to get to the wood shop to sand the wing then cut out the ailerons. Still deciding what engine to use, the Brison 40cc or the Zinoah 45cc. Both are a good choice but the Zin has a spring starter, that's a plus on an old guys shoulder and arm. Once I have the wing completed I will start installing the inners into the fuse.

The wing was sanded then came the part I don't care for, even worse then sanding!! Cutting out the ailerons! I measured out where the rear spars were located then used an Exacto knife to cut the sheeting then used a Japanese cut off saw that is thin enough to get through the cut so I could cut through the ribs. This does give you a great fitting aileron and I do it often but I just find building the ailerons separately easier. This method requires the builder to sand or cut the width of the aileron down to fit so it is the correct size after you install the leading edge to them. Using the ruler and doing all the math {counting the little lines} hurts my head. Now it is just a mater of installing the wood between the ribs, a backing so I can have some meat to install the hinges into the wing and the hard points for the aileron control horns then the LE and I will get into installing the gear into the fuse. If I was in a hurry it would be a few days work before I start covering but I'm old and lazy, never in a rush anymore.
