Yes I agree with that Doc. It's no fun when it gets to that situation. Art Glad to hear she's already fixed. Enjoy yourself at the ODP, Say Hi to Paul for me.

Check it out!
I'm start'n to get good at this......[:@] This time it was a landing that went bad - actually a whole flight that shouldn't have happened. All the flags, windsocks and air directional devices were still, straight out and pointing in every direction, all at the same time.......it felt ok on the runway at take off time, but .......
the wind was turbulent and from the side now and I found that I didn't want to be in the air at all. I quickly tried an approach but the plane was nearly sideways (a good 45 degrees crab) from the cross wind.....so I went back to the other runway and tried again. The wind seemed to be sort of down this runway and it appeared that a landing was possible. I was close to touching down about waist or chest high and a turbulent wind gust hit the plane from the side, swirling violently........the plane tossed up and to the left (the same attitude you might see when flying a power on snap roll) - this was not a good angle to be at, especially this close to the ground. Of course this reduced the flying speed to less than flying speed - it came down on the left lower wing tip and landing gear, twisting and going up.......cart wheel style........ The cowl,prop/engine did not hit the ground at all. The next part to impact the ground was the top right wing tip - followed by the tail end..........then it ended up on its back......about all I could do was hold the radio and watch. Oh I suppose I could have firewalled the throtle and tried to power out, but experience has taught me that power at this point just adds momentum to the crash, making it worse.
The left lower tip was broken off - again! The trailing edge on the lower right wing at the first inboard rib was broken. And the landing gear was bent and partially torn from the fuse. The hatch which held the rear landing gear legs was slightly damaged, but easily fixed. Numerous flying and landing wires were also broken.
The fuse has no structural damage at all.......WHEW!

Hi Art,
That was some nasty wind we were flying in Friday. I didn't enjoy my flight at all either that first day because of the swirling turbulence. Very glad to hear that the damage wasn't too bad. How long before she's flying again?

Hi Folks - it's me again!
I am entering the third flying season for my 1/3 scale Nieuport 11. There have been occasions that I haven't treated her very well, but the design has met my expectations. I finished up last season with a top 10 finish in the Scale Masters - for me, that is an accomplishment. The outline has proven to be pretty accurate. And the flight characteristics are stellar (in my humble opinion). It has been my main flyer for the past two seasons and has earned its place in my hanger!
I also attended the inaugural Mid Atlantic Dawn Patrol in Virginia Beach last October - better known as the MAD Patrol. It is held on the grounds of a full scale aviation museum which hangers 20 or so flying, full scale WWI aircraft......what a treat! My N-11 was awarded a trophy as the Top Allied Aircraft.
I flew a lot of sorties, that's for sure......engaged in several dog fights......had a grand time with the plane. The museum is awesome!
My N-11 has been inspected, cleaned up, had the fuel tank serviced, batteries cycled and is deemed ready for another flying season.
I have sent out several sets of plans to various modelers. One has reported back to me about his maiden flight this very weekend. He indicated that he had no issues with the build or the maiden flight. I felt almost as proud as when my first kid was born! I hope he will chime in and give you all a first hand report of his build and his first flight.

I have completed a build of Art's N-11 and flew her this past weekend. I have to say she flies absolutley fantastic. I will be taking her out again tomorrow evening and all weekend. I will post pictures afterwards. The build itself was very straight forward and I encountered no issues. I will say this build is for people with some building experience. Art provided a disc with a boat load of build photos which will help guide you along. Flight characteristics are great, she was very predictable and stable through out the entire flight and will perform spirited aerobatics when asked. I am flying with a Zenoah 445 twin which is way too much, this airplane is light even at 1/3 scale, I don't have an exact weight but I will weigh it this weekend. Feel free to ask any questions and I will be happy to answer them the best that I can.

Here are a few pics from the field on Sat. She weighs 29 lbs dry, I have a Zenoah 445 for power, so it's a 1/4 to 1/2 throttle bird.

Thank you Ron,
No Art didn't arrive until late Sat, due to that dreaded work thing and I had a few cable issues to straighten out after its last flight on Sat. Today it's been raining all day so everyone packed up. He's welcome to as much stick time as he would like. I really think it will handle the same as his, our weight is pretty much the same. He's flying with a G62 which is a great match with this aeroplane. It's great to hear from you Ron, I haven't spoken with you in quite a while, take care.

I just got Art's plans for the N-11 and put it on the to-do list. I'm in the middle of bashing a BUSA 1/3 N-17 into a N-23. It will have a MR Gear Drive and will be done in the same Belgian squadron you did for the N-11.
Will you be making the trip to Rhinebeck this year? I'd like to make it out to your neck of the woods one of these years, 2014 is the big one isn't it?

Hey Ron,
Rhinebeck is up in the air this year, work and family responsibilities have cut the travel schedule so everyhing is fluid at the moment. Yes Dayton 2014 is looking to be a huge show, I'm really looking forward to that. I think Paul also sent you the flyer for the Ohio Dawn Patrol in July. Have any photos of the N-23?.
Have a good one.

Hi Guys,
I have a copy of Art's plans and will start building this winter. Just took a quick glance at the plans looks pretty straight forward to build. I lost my 1/4 DRI last summer and I think this will fill the spot nicely.
Later!!

RE: 1/3 Scale Nieuport 11
Hi jeffo,
One of those stupid builder mistakes. When I assembled the plane I noticed the rudder horn bolts barely caught into the nut plate on the back side. I told myself I needed to pick up some longer bolts and replace them before flying. Well after about 10 flights on the DRI it happened. I had forgot to replace the bolts and the plane started acting funny in the air, started doing slight flat turns with no inputs. I immediately turned down wind to set up for landing and about the time I went to turn on crosswind the plane snapped and spun in from about 150-200ft. The rudder horn had pulled loose and the rudder went full left. The results was a tight spin that was uncontrollable. All I could do was chop the throttle and wait for the impact.
I thought about rebuilding the plane but decided against it. I had to rebuild my Waco and that was enough. I was very hard on planes last year. The engine was not damaged and I am using it in a 30cc Stick. The N-11 will make a nice WWI replacement. I watched Art fly his last year and it is a nice flying plane for sure.

I love your N11................. My first love is WWII birds, but after seeing all of those WWI planes at the museum in Pungo flying around so many times, I am beginning to appreciate them more and more. If TRC has another MAD Patrol at the museum this year, you need to bring your N11 back as well as your new Eindecker. The museum has added a couple more WWI planes to their collection since the last Patrol that I think you'll like to see. I have attached a "Sneak Peek" for your viewing pleasure.........ENJOY ! ! The Albatross hasn't flown in about 35 years, but the D-VIII is in flying condition.
Take care,
David

Hi David
Thanks, I sure have enjoyed the N-11 project. The design, construction and especially the flying!
I am looking forward to making the trip again this year. More full scale WWI planes for the museum is always good to hear about.
Don't know which planes to bring this year.......I will have 3 but only have room to transport maybe 2. The N-11, the Eindecker EIII (which I am finishing up this month) and then there is a Balsa USA DR1 which should be flying sometime in July. All are 1/3 scale - that's a lot of wings to pack into one Dodge Caravan!
If I had to make a decision today, it would be the N11 and the Eindecker.
Cheers,
Art

Well, here it is - 2 years later and the same problem rears it ugly head AGAIN! The skid broke in the exact same spot, even with the additional length of spring steel........but it did last two years.......so that is a step in the right direction, isn't it?
Any whoooo, I made another skid just like the last skid - it should last a year or two, right?
I think the better approach would be to laminate a 1/8" G10 piece between two 1//16' plywood pieces. Barry made the skid on his build like this, but it has only flown maybe ten flights or so - the jury is still out on this one.

Hey Art,
I know I'm about a year late with this, but I have finally started on my N11 project. I have a lofty goal of getting it finished for the '14 ODP. I finished one fuse side up in one night. The rest of it looks like it should go together without any problem. I did get a Tony Clarke belt reduction for it, so I'll be able to swing a (mostly) scale prop at 32". Looking forward to getting it done.
