Another Planes of Fame airshow is in the can and I thought I would share some pictures from the event. This year's theme was "Lightning Strikes" and the show featured five flying P-38's as well as a sixth on static display. A truly magnificent sight! There were many other highlights as well. I've got a ton of pictures and will continue to update the thread as time permits until I've run out of photos or you guys beg me to stop!

Curtis P-40C Tomahawk


Seversky AT-12 Guardsman


Unrestored Messerschmitt Bf-109E on display in the museum. This airplane was brought down by a Hawker Hurricane over Russia in 1942 if memory serves. It will be restored to fly in due course.


North American P-51D Mustang


Freshly restored Hawker Sea Fury with original Centaurus powerplant. Something of a rarity these days.


Boeing P-26 Peashooter, yes it flew and the pictures to prove it are coming!


North American P-51C Mustang


A gratuitious shot of the P-51C just because I like it so much!

We were there Friday and Saturday Chris and I think everything I've posted thus far was from Friday. I'm sure we must have passed one another many times. Guess we need to all wear t-shirts with our names printed on them!

Thanks to everyone for the encouraging words and I will continue to post as fast as I can. This is but the tip of the iceburg!

Bell P-63 Kingcobra, I never getter tired of seeing this airplane perform. Simply awesome!

Aichi Val replica which, if I'm not mistaken, is based primarily upon a BT-13 airframe.

General Motors FM-2 Wildcat, I had the great fortune of getting to sit in the cockpit of this little fighter. (Thanks Wayne!) I have a whole new respect for the brave veterans who went to war in such machines.

Just one more before bed. The show was opened each day with the missing man formation flown by this spectacular four ship consisting of the P-26, P-40, P-51, and F-86. Not a great photo but a superb salute and one that may never be repeated.

Thx for the pictures Chad. ANYONE that lives close enough to make it to Chino for an Airshow is one lucky person. I visited there once, but not at an Airshow. The planes they have are awesome, and I only wish and hope I someday can make it to a Chino Airshow!. For now, at least I can enjoy Chad's pictures.

Thanks so much! Chino was always our lunch stop while flying patrols of the high mts. in the DFG Cessna 175 STOL. Great food and being in uniform we were never refused access of the various hangars
where some of the most outstanding planes were housed. What a way to spend your lunch hour..........maybe a little more? That was many years ago but your photos bring back a lot of memorys.

Happy to share Lee. I have many photos from previous Chino shows as well.


The P-40C belongs to Stephen Grey's The Fighter Collection and will be travelling to Duxford, England to join his many other warbirds. A collection that already includes a P-40B and P-40F. He also has a P-36 under restoration which will join his already flying Hawk 75 which was the export version of the P-36. For those who may not know, the P-36 was the radial engined forerunner of the P-40 series.



The Planes of Fame F4U-1a Corsair leads the F4U-4 in a line up of radial engine types. The F4U-1a is currently the oldest flyable Corsair in the world.

Douglas Skyraider


Late 1930's American aviation technology, Boeing P-26 Peashooter, Grumman Duck, and Grumman F3F. Where else but Chino could you see these three on the flight line?


Grumman F3F-2 "Flying Barrel"


Sea Fury "Argonaught" belonging to the Sanders family. This bird has seen three different powerplants in the course of its flying career, the original Bristol Centaurus followed by a Wright R-3350 and now flying with a P&W R-2800.


Recently restored Hawker Sea Fury T.20 (two seat trainer variant) also belonging to the Sanders family. The Sanders also own the R-4360 powered Sea Fury racer "Dreadnaught" to round out their collection of Furies.


Another shot of the Mk.XIV Spitfire which is operated by the So Cal wing of the Commemorative Air Force. Another airplane I never get tired of seeing.


The Spit leads the Kingcobra and a brace of Mustangs in the line up of inline powered fighters.


P-51D "Lady Alice" owned by Dr. Ken Wagner.


The Planes of Fame's Seversky AT-12 Guardsman. The only flying Seversky product anywhere in the world if memory serves.


The AT-12 was an export version of the P-35 fighter which was the grandfather of the P-47 Thunderbolt. Can you see the family resemblance?


Curtis built P-47G Thunderbolt of the PoF. One of only two razorback Jugs still flying, the other being the P-47G belonging to The Fighter Collection at Duxford, England.

As mentioned previously this year's show theme was "Lightning Strikes" and there were 5 of the world's 7 flyable Lightnings in attendance as well as one static example.

F-5G photo recon version of the Lightning belonging to the Yanks Air Museum. This airplane is restored to flyable condition but is not flown and thus was on static display only.


P-38E "Glacier Girl" owned by Rod Lewis.


P-38L "Honey Bunny" owned by Allied Fighters.


P-38L "Tangerine" of the Tillamook Aviation Musuem.


P-38J "Thoughts of Midnight" belonging to Commanche Fighters.


P-38J "23 Skidoo" of the Planes of Fame collection.


All five flyable lightnings in something of a formation. Not a great photo but it does serve to record the event. Sunday's formation was much tighter but, unfortuately, we were back in Arizona by then!

Chad,
I go every year, but it's great seeing your pictures. Thanks for showing them. As you well know, it's aviation sensory overload going to Chino, so seeing your pictures captures a few glimpses of things I either didn't see, or things I did see but don't remember! Keep posting them, don't think anyone will complain.
Also, just to let others know, the P-51 Lady Alice belonging to Dr. Ken Wagner who is a fellow R/C flyer! He flies with us over at the Prado flying field almost within sight of Chino airport.
