Default Can you cut the Saito .40 air intake?

Hi, I'd like to mount this Saito .40 as close to the firewall as reasonable. The rear opening on the carburetor air intake seems to require plenty of clearance for free air intake. My other 4-stroke engines all have downward opening air intakes. Could this Saito intake be cut at 45 degrees or so to take the air more directly upward and not need so much firewall clearance? Thanks to all.
