I recently fell for nostalgia & purchased a Cox Pee Wee 020 from a friend.

Of course I needed a model for it so I downloaded a plan from Outer Zone
and built a Top Flite Roaring 20.

One flying session was enough to remind me why electrics have made tiny glow
engines a thing of the past (except for the 'old hands' who get great pleasure in
the mess, smell & noise.)

What I want to do is convert it to electric which I should have done in the first place.

I will probably buy from Hobby King, what would the ideal outrunner to replace the Cox?

The model weighs 190 grams (6.7 oz) including the glow engine.

I had to look twice. You call it a Roaring 20, but sure looks like a thing I built years ago by Top Flite, Called Top Dawg. I cannot find the pics. I think they were in the album that our dog ate.

I can't say it's ideal, but I have used the AX 1806 with 2s and a7x3.5 on some .02 planes and it seems pretty close. Also the Tunigy 2200 seems to be close with 3s and a smaller prop.

Edit:

Slight correction that is the Turnigy 2211 2300Kv that I use on 3s. http://www.hobbyking.com/hobbyking/s...or_2300kv.html

The AX is this one http://www.hobbyking.com/hobbyking/s...otor_19g_.html probably much like a .02 on 3s but I never tried it.

Just a quick couple thoughts Mate.
1,you are using 20/30 percent nitro
With at least 20percent castor aren't you?
2, the peewee is prob the hardest Cox to
Get to purr, apart from incorrect fuel the usual
Cure is remove the needle valve,coat with
Silicon bathroom type sealant or Hylamarr,
Replace at about 3.5 turns out from closed
Then leave it to cure for 24 hours.
The result should make you smile.

If you still think lekky 3 cells will be massive
Over kill.

Yep, 25% nitro & 25% oil (half syth, half castor). No problems starting it or running it, just the mess & noise. I have no idea of the history of the engine, it was clogged with old castor but I have a feeling it was never actually given a decent run. I left the exhaust throttle off. - John.

Update!

Thanks xby, I ended up buying 2 of the Turnigy 2211-2300 motors mainly because they come with the prop adapter.

Following comments on the Hobby King page for this motor I went with the 5 x 3 black props. The only mods I had to
make were a 6mm ply spacer so the prop driver was in the same place, cut & spread the fuselage sides to clear the
motor and cut holes in the firewall to cool the battery/speed controller.

Originally I had a 350 mA 2 cell lipo & home made regulator to run the radio. I took a chance that the battery would
be large enough & fitted an 18A speed controller (a bit of an overkill) which of course meant I could remove the regulator.

The overall weight is almost exactly the same, heaps of duration, considerably more power than the Pee Wee plus throttle
control. And I sold the Pee Wee to a fellow club member who enjoys the noise, smell & mess. Every one's happy.

you will like the 2211-2300. On 3s with a 5" prop it is like a .049, should be fine on 2s. I have used several and the only problem I ever had was bending a shaft in a crash

PS I find a 12 a esc is enough
