Default Newest Shinden release

This may be the first Shinden of the latest batch to fly. Don't have an exact weight yet, but it flies great and looks good. $1500. I have a YS 175 with Hyde Mount and YS header with Hatori 821 pipe, using Cool Power 30% Heli blend. 19.5 X 11.5 APC prop. Futaba 10CAP, 9650 throttle, 9151 rudder, BLS 551 's in the wings, BLS 153 's in the stabs. 617FS receiver, Digiswitch and ThunderPower 1350mAh battery pack. Expertly put together by Tommy Golson, and he did a marvelous job.

This plane rolls like a dream, snaps are violent and fast. Think I'm gonna love it, planning to bring it to Bakersfield, California next month for myself and Bryan Hebert to fly there.

On a side note, this design is so pure, it captures the spiral slip stream well enough that the smoke stream makes three loops around my left ankle as I hold it for Hebert to run up before the smoke exits the airplane rearward. If you don't believe it, you can even ask me.

Er...... having trouble uploading pics, but I've got ten nice photos, really.

Brian

Brian,

I really enjoy success stories, and specially when you can accomplish this with a $1500 airframe that looks so nice and with world class quality.

I think Brian Hebert made the right choice with this manufacturer as now there is an airframe with reasonable cost which can make anyone competitive, and I know Brian truly believes in that concept, besides the fact you will get a truly no mix plane as it is there, not in just words around the net.

Post those pictures soon, but make sure we can see the smoke!! GO YS!!

I just received a few pictures of my Shinden. It's still in the paint booth at the factory but it's looking good. Can't wait to get it. The stabs in front of my wings are someone else's.

Me too Scott! Hopefully mid June delivery.....

With it's slightly rearward canopy line, I think this model will work exceptionally well with a contra set-up. It is naturally more stable in yaw. If anyone has read some of the latest banter on the Contar in the elctric forum, this becomes obvious.

Hey Matt,

That's what we're hoping for delivery.  Bryan wants me to put the Brenner Contra in this one and with Bryan and Brenner's support, that's our plan.  The only thing I want to make sure of is that the plane RTF minus the 10S pack won't be over 3700g.  In my opinion, you need to have 1300g available for the 10S pack or you'll be flying with small mah batteries (or paying a load of money) to keep the weight down.  With the Contra, I'd like to run 5000+mah and without breaking the bank, that's what I think is necessary.  If the plane weighs more than that with the Contra, we will probably just put in the Neu motor and gear drive and save the Contra for the Allure

Hmmm, didn't realize that you were doingthe contar install....Thought it was Bryan>

It's gonna be very interesting to hear about how that develops. Keep me posted please....

My approach to angular neutrality up front is different and doesn't includes a contra. Air is a fluid and can be bent in all sorts of ways. I am experimenting in my Aesthesis but not ready for any reports yet.

Bryan is sticking with YS for sure on his. We hope to learn what we can learn with the Contra in the nose of the Shinden...all for the Allure design. If we are too close on weight, we'll just weight (lol) on the Allure to put the Contra in it. I'll keep you posted. I'm having Todd Blose finish it out and if he has time, we'll do a build thread as well. That way, you'll know if we do Contra or not. I'll make sure to stay in touch about the performance and I'm positive Bryan will chime in on it as well once I get it down there for him to fly.

Hi Jim,
No sir, no Contra for the YS. Bryan will be running the YS in his new Shinden and I'm hopefully putting the Contra/Neu in mine. Since Bryan is sticking with YS, he asked me to put Brenner's Contra in mine since I was going electric anyway.

I've had a new Shinden in the box for about 6 weeks now that I've been eager to dig into. I waited to start on it until after I completed a different build for someone else which is now done. Bryan asked me to do a thread with some pics on its assembly so I thought I'd just resurrect this one since its already about the newest Shinden version. I'll start with a repost I made somewhere else so everything is consolidated into one thread. These pics show the box a Shinden comes in, the bagged/covered parts as received, and how the airframe looks with absolutely no assembly.

Attached is a picture of the parts list that came with the plane. I weighed everything just for kicks to see how close my numbers were to what was already listed. My numbers are hand written in pencil to the left of the "Quantity" column. Everything seemed to be within reason of the weights they had written on the sheets themselves.

The sum comes out to 5.3 lbs. Is it the E or the G version?

This will be an electric version of the Shinden using a Q80-11S that I already had.The landing gear was installed first. The fuse landing gear plate was predrilled with holes for installation, however, the gear halves themselves were not. It would have been a bit tricky to perfectly match the fuse holes to the gear so I took the easy way out and drilled new holes through everything at once which was quick and easy to do.

The next thing to do was to verify proper wing and stab incidence settings.

The wings were already set and do not have wing adjusters (I believe Bryan's next production run will have them???). The right wing was slightly off from the left wing so I manually changed it by enlarging the fuse holes for the wing pins and overlaying new doughnut/cookies to lock in a new setting (see pic). Both wings are now set at +0.5 degrees which is where Bryan said to put them.

The horizontal stabs do have a cam type screw in the bottom of the fuse to adjust their incidence (see pic). They required adjustment and were set to +0.2 degrees per Bryan's instruction.

Next comes the installation of the Q80-11S.

Bryan said to set the motor to the front face of the nose ring and indicated it should have about 1/4 degree down thrust and 3/4 degree right already built into it. I found something slightly different by checking the parallelness (word?) of the face plate relative to the positioning of the wing tube. By using a 90 degree datum line between the leading edge of the wing tube and the face plate I found 1.5 degrees right thrust. A bit unconventional way to see things but it worked out. I found 0.1 degrees up/down thrust relative to the hatch rails when using them as a datum line reference.

I did set the motor to the nose ring regardless of the thrust difference but left about 1/8" gap for the spinner back plate to allow right thrust adjustments if desired after flying the plane. I know, I know, I know most pattern folks like a tighter spinner fitting than that but hey, I'm allowing room for easy adjustments later in case I want some.

Ryan Gonsoulin set his Shinden up using a Q80-14XS. He came up with an aluminum plate that made mounting the front of the motor really easy. He drew it in autocad specifically for the Q80 and the Shinden nose ring. It's made from 1/8†6061-T6 aluminum through a water jet cutting process. I wanted one real bad and had to eat crawdads and party like a Cajun with him to get him to make me one. Anyway, the plate was mounted 3/16" behind the back of the nose ring using standoffs. The pictures may be more self explanatory in how it was used.

The rear supporting mount was made from light ply. This methodology is similar to something I saw Earl Haury use in his Axials but he used CF plate which I didn't have.

Individual elevator servos (Futaba BLS153's) were set in each stab using a light plate placed under the skin. See pics...

BTW, I'll replace the clevis linkages someday with the fancy ball bearing stuff when I accumulate enough items to justify a parts order.

Ruder servo and linkages installed. Pretty basic stuff as the kit already has the hard points installed, holes drilled, needed hardware, etc.

This is a wire tube that will go back to the tail section. It's made from rolled very light 1/16" balsa and weighs only 5 grams all up. The ends are reinforced with lightweight FG cloth so the exiting wires won't break through. The forward end terminates near where the receiver will be.

Vent holes were cut in the bottom of the fuse such that air will flow over the speed controller and motor batteries before exiting. The hole pattern is similar to what Ryan did on his Shinden except this has fewer holes. Combing was added to the front of each hole to create a lip in order to disturb the air and create a low pressure are behind it. This should help create a higher velocity of air flowing through and exiting the fuse.

My Shinden finally arrived today. My wife and I made the 6 hour drive over to Baton Rouge and back to pick it up from Bryan. Pictures really don't do it justice. Bryan weighed it and we should be OK on weight but there's just not weight room on this big airplane to put the Contra drive in it and be under 5000g. I'll have the Neu motor in it and hopefully have it in the air in a few weeks.

Very nice Scott! Is there a story behind that scheme, does it represent something? Should show up well in the sky.
