DLE 170 exhaust
I am considering this engine for an upcoming build. And I was wondering if I was to use headers and run the separate exhaust to a single canister , would this help reduce the weedeater sound?

RE: DLE 170 exhaust
Not sure if you've heard or like the sound of one of the big twins on canisters, but IMO, they sound fairly smooth and much nicer than the standard in cowl muffs. I have the DLE canisters on my DLE170, and am quite pleased with their sound. Much nicer sounding than my DLE55 on a JTec pitts...
As to the single canister, probably would work, but I've never seen one of the size/volume you'd likely need to not choke off the engine and still quiet it down....the DLE canisters are over 2" diameter and 18" in length (just going from my memory)...

That's good to hear on your canisters. I'm thinking both headers running into one big canister on the firewall with outlets pointing down. This will be on a 46% Pitts S-1S and there is plenty of room. All my engines have the pitts style exhaust and I hate the sound but most won't accommodate another form.

You should stick with a proven canister setup. Usually header length is critical on a 2 stroke. A while back I did a canister install on a 38% Extra and to get them to fit I cut 2 inces off the header. The engine transitioned like poop. I ended up putting the stock DA mufflers back on. The best sounding airplane I have owned to date was a Comp ARF 260. It had a DA 150 with stock mufflers but a 3 blade prop. Running at a slightly lower RPM and the loss of a lot of prop noise made it almost sound like a well tuned motorcycle.
