So You have a Triplane

RE: So You have a Triplane
So I was excited to find this book in my mail yesterday, http://www.amazon.com/Fokker-Aircraf...rds=Fokker+DR1
It is a great source of info on the placement of many detail items. So good cockpit info and gun details. I had a few problems with it though. Some photos are mis-marked. Confusing the DVI with the DR 1 prototypes.
I certainly recommend it though, for anyone looking to detail their triplane, as it is helpful in showing how many items look. It is interesting how the DR1 had no instruments on the panel as we are used to seeing. They were spread out throughout the cockpit.
I am doing my cockpit details now, and this book, along with all of my others are coming in very handy. And for those that are interested, there is a Fokker DVII book available as well.
Oh, funny how the draftsman used knotty wood to represent the sheeting and wood components of the aircraft. I have to assume knots would be avoided in the actual full scale build.

RE: So You have a Triplane
Just started a build on a Flair 1/4 scale DR1. I am planning on powering it with a DLE 30. What servos are you guys using on the 1/4 scale ones. There is not a lot of info about radio gear in the instructions.
Thanks,
Chris

Thanks for the info mustangfever. I didn't even think about having to use low profile servos for the ailerons. I just started building yesterday so i have a lot of work ahead of me!

You're right about the work part. Fun, tho. Not a difficult shape anywhere. Here's mine in bones. Note weight in the right wing tips (middle and lower) for counter torque purposes. (Engine displacement in cid times 1 oz of lead.) Also, I put counterbalance weight in the counterbalance ends of the ailerons and elevator. Takes some of the load off the servos, I guess. Flies well, so who am I to argue?

I am putting HS625 metal gears in mine all around, on the controls anyway. You do not need low profile servos as the wing is thick enough to take standard size. I will go with some other standard sized for my throttle, then probably a micro with switch to ground the magneto for engine kill.
Got word today BUSA will add a triplane to the 1/6 line of kits. That was very good news.
I added a drain line to run down one of the rear landing gear struts. This tube runs from inside the tank compartment, all the way down, under the axel wing. This allows the overflow fuel to run straight to the ground. Very important when trying to avoid fuel contact with the axel wing. Raw fuel is very hard on them.

How about this one? A friend of mine built it but never had any luck flying it. It crashed at least twice and he rebuilt it, then finally gave up. It was 1/4 scale.

I am the builder of the Sopwith Tripe that Chris posted. The maiden was fine except for my landing. When I rebuilt the gear, stupid me never rechecked the balance and she was just a tad tail heavy the second flight. Couple that with my less-than-great flying talent, and she ended up stalling and going in. The maiden was solid and steady.
Jerry Beherens plans
G38 with a 20-8 prop
Scratch built with cowl and dummy engine from Fiberglass Specialities
It's a 70's design and came in at 22 lbs. Probably could be built much lighter. Solartex covering.
I'll find and shrink some more pics.

Balsa USA 1/4 scale. Zenoah G26 power, weighs 16lbs. Solartex with latex paint. Flys great. Agreed, landings with any crosswind can be ....interesting! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8ccytPmHWDg

RE: So You have a Triplane
Guys, i am coming over on vacation in november, and i am considering having the balsa USA 1/3rd scale tripe kit delivered to my hotel, how scale isthe outline? and do the wings dissasemble into 2 halves, or are the 3 wings one piece units? i owned the Flair one, and loved it, wish i had not sold it, but it was getting tatty, and money offered was too good to miss, power was a zenoah 23, landing was always interesting, i was a good customer of menz, tried wheeling it in on 2, three pointing it, all had equal chance of biting the tarmac with the prop,

The upper and middle wing attach directly to the fuselage by two dowels in the front part of the middle wing and two bolts and the back. The lower wing by the same method with dowels in the back and bolts in the front. Then it's just a simple matter of attaching the screws for the lower wing interplane struts and your done. Takes me about five minutes to set it up at the field.
