Default 28th Roadrunner Pattern Classic

It's not too make plans to attend the 28th Annual Roadrunner Pattern contest. This year it will be held on May 18 and 19th at the Rocky Mountain Flying Machine(RMFM) field outside of Albuquerque, NM. This field is north of the Route 66 Casino on county road 36 at an altitude of 5300 feet. Maps are available either through the RMFM website at http://rmfm.org or through the NSRCA website contest calendar. Weather and size of entry field permitting we are planning to fly six rounds with four on Saturday and two on Sunday. We have both north-south and east-west runways that are over 600 feet in length with a petromat surface and no dropoff at the edges. There will be no issues due to early morning sun as both runways will be set up with stripes and 150 meter poles. We will be checking for proper failsafe operation.

The world famous Laguna burgers will be available for lunch both days at the contest plus the standard coffee and donuts in the morning. We are planning a Saturday night outing to Village Pizza as we have done for the Fall contest in the past. There is also a full casino and hotel within three miles of the field.

If you have any questions please drop me an email or give me a call at 623-986-8206. The flyer and more information is on the NSRCA calendar.

Thanks
John Gayer CD

Looking forward to it! Guys are coming down from Colorado, coming up from the south, and sounds like a group from Arizona. How about from the east- anybody coming in from Texas?

Thanks to John Gayer CD, Richard Lindberg Asst CD, and the Rocky Mtn Flying Machine Club for putting on a great contest in very challenging wind/dust conditions. Only 3 rounds flown the first day due to wind. Today was forecasted for even stronger wind but John called for wheels up at 7:30am (which we met!) and managed to get the remaining 3 rounds in before 11am.

Default RE: 28th Roadrunner Pattern Classic

The 28th edition of the Roadrunner Pattern Classic is complete. We managed to get in 6 rounds in two days and finish by 11 AM on Sunday despite rather challenging conditions. While we have both a north-south and an east-west runway the wind, as always, had a mind of its own and liked to split the runways and come on strong. We quit early on Saturday when the wind started picking up the desert.
WE had 14 contestants split fairly evenly across 4 classes with no FAI contestants. There was a lot of excellent flying being done in the wind. Alan Schiaffino has improved a lot since I saw him fly in his first Advanced contest in Phoenix this winter. If he keeps up this rate of improvement, I expect to see him doing well in Masters next year. Ricardo Arcibar was flying a Sequence in the windy conditions over the weekend and ended up with a well earned third place.
The contest would not have been possible without excellent support from non-competing members of the Rocky Mountain Flying Machine. Of course those members competing(four) also contributed in large ways. Jeff Worsham spent a lot of time doing the photography, as seen above and a lot more, in addtion to bringing home a first place in Sportsman. A lot of practice does pay off.
Results are attached. They are also available on Don Ramsey's website and the NSRCA website. Also attached is the artwork on the tshirts that were included with registration.

And a big thank you to all the out of town pilots who showed up in Albuquerque to compete this weekend. We even had a contestant come in from Chicago to join us.

Nice job John, Richard, and club.
With the possible exception of poor Bill, the whole Colorado contingent enjoyed the contest and your hospitality!

It was heartbreaking to see Bill loose his Nuance. But on the flipside, a great encouragement in character and sportsmanship as he hung out with us right up to the end- helping others, calling, judging, constructive feedback, coming to the evening gatherings, and all the while adding fun and camaraderie to the event. This is what makes pattern fun
