R-48/P-61/P-66 Vultee Vanguard
Hello people.. Am trying to get good plans for a model of the P-66 variant that was built before the final radial-engined production P-66. The aircraft had a streamlined cowl over a radial to give the impression that there was an in-line engine under the cowling, but heating problems put an end to the project. If any of you guys have any info on this variant, pls email me if you can. My best wishes to all and their families for a healthy, happy holiday season. Joey [email protected]

Hello JG.. many thanks for taking the time to answer my post. Yeah, that's the production version of the P-66, after they scrapped the streamlined cowl version which developed engine heating problems. Imagine the pic you sent with an extended, streamlined cowl, and that would be the bird I'm trying to get accurate pics or drawings of. They only built one, & it was all aluminum. If you get any more info, please let me know. Thanks again, & best holiday/new year's wishes to you. Joey

Hi Scale dail... Thanks for your response.. the pic you sent shows the bird in a photo I've seen before, and yeah, it's kinda ugly from this angle, but there are other pics taken when the plane was on the ground, and she's just georgous. Sort of like a Hughes H-1 with a streamlined cowl. Anyhow, thanks again for your response, and I hope your holiday season is a great one!! Joey

That picture is the only one I have ever seen of the prototype. It did not fly very long in that form. I am currently building a BT-13 trainer and you can clearly see that the P-66 was just a BT-13 with retracting gear and cleaned up canopy plus a bigger motor. You may be able to utilize BT-13 drawings or even the Brian Taylor plans from Bud Holman to build your P-66. I gave it a little thought at the time I got the Plans for the BT-13 but could not find enough info on color schemes etc. The picture of the model looks like the plane that Ziroli built for an article in Flying Models quite a few years ago. If I remember it was a small 60 to large 40 size. They probably still have the plans available.

Hiya Larry.. Thanks for your response, and best holiday wishes. I think that color shot of the P-66 model was built by Vance Mosher who also sells the plans (which I already have.) I was just trying to see if anyone out there had some accurate specs or drawings of the prototype R-48 with the streamlined cowl. Many thanks again for your info. Best, Joey

Can you tell me where you got the free plans from. I used to have vance moshers prototype, but sufferd a fatal accident. I have everything to rebuild it, but would be cool to build a smaller one first. Did you form the canopy or just bend the plastic yourself? Do you have anymore build pics you might could share? Thanks for the the help.
Thanks, Jason
