How about CG location? Elevator setup? Flaps used on takeoff? Flap-elevator offset.

I know folks have said this plane likes to ground hog and then break ground suddenly. Seems to me the right combo of CG location, flaps, and elevator should cure most of that.
Flaps or at least half flaps cures most of the takeoff leap, but it still like to get airspeed up before it rotates.

Gentlemen, I discovered on my smaller OV10s that the problem with take offs is the location of the main gear; they are too far aft. I discovered this on my 50" Bronco and fixed my 80" plane before it flew; it needs no flaps for a smooth rotation. If you can't move the main gear forward easily, try about 25° of flaps on take off. With the plane ready to fly (fueled up, etc), push down on the horizontal stabilizer until the nose gear is off the ground; this is roughly how much force the plane will need to rotate on take off.

That's a good point. I always look at the relation between the mains and the CG for stuff like this.

I notice on this Super-giant Bronco, he has the main gear struts raked forward slightly. I don't know if that's true scale or not.
But if you watch the takeoffs, the roll is short with little pressure on the nose gear. I think he probably has his CG further back than I would like on a first flight too.

WHat kind of elevator offset do you guys use with full flaps. %'s can be different with everyone, different Tx's, etc.
Maybe you could give an estimate of elevator movement at the trailing edge

For example: 1/4" down with half flaps, 3/8" down with full flaps. - something like that?

On my 80" OV-10, I had only a small amount of downward pitch when my flaps were about 30° down. Since I liked the nose down attitude on landing, I didn't mix any up elevator in.

I sent my gear back to Century Jet to get converted to a 85 or 90deg. (can't remember) This gave me the forward rake that the F/S has and allows the gear to retract fully in the boom. Mine has no problem rotating on take off.

Check out this video at the 1:00 mark. There isn't any wonder I can't get my gear doors to look scale. I never had any idea they folded like that.

Hey Guys, I had a blast with my Bronco at Joe Nall. I got 9 flights on her in 1 1/2 days. She ran great, flew great and landed like an angel with sore feet.

Here is a pic that the photographer from Model Airplane News took.

I love this plane!!!!!

Ok hope this thread is still going, guys need a little help please, I'm working on a YT Bronco which as far as I can gather is the same as the KMP ESM one, first thing I notice on the thread is that it refers to it being 96inch wingspan yet KMP instructions state 94.5 inch.

Ok so my problem is that I've just returned from the States and had Lenny at Shindin make me a scale set of retracts for the Bronco, today I fitted the rear mains, retracts and legs, some wood removal required but no major hassle, so this evening I've just remove the required amount of woodwork to get the front retract unit installed, this is where my headache has begun, with the main retract unit sat flush theres no way the leg fork is going to fit inside the fus and hold a 3.5 inch wheel as stated in Lennys website, the fork just about sits flush with the bottom of the fus, any ideas please

Laurie

I'm not sure why you measured "only" 95.5". My KMP is exactly 96", which is exactly 1/5 scale, which is why I assembled it to begin with. I really like the size.

P. S. The recomended balance point is SPOT ON.

Thats strange because ESM are the suppliers for KMP and YT and theres no way they'd have made a sliglhtly bigger version for KMP even KMP's instructions say 94.5 which is wrong, don't know seems bizzare, all I know is I got to work out how to fit this front retract unit

Is your retract mounting plate flat in the plane or at an angle/ I think it's supposed to be tipped back at an angle. I don't have a crystal clear memory, but mine is sitting open on the bench so I'll try to take a photo of the install, if I remember to.

Mines sat flat, problem with it being slightly angled is that the leg will not be 90 degrees when down, been workng on it again today and had friend round so we put it together with gear down, checked out with some scale pic's and came to the conclusion 3 inch wheel on the front and 4 inch on the rears will look about right and I think a 3 inch front will hopefully fit just inside, be interested to see how yors looks

cheers

Ok. I got the pics. It is installed at an angle but the CJM retracts seem to be set up for that. Btw, a few degrees of forward angle on a nose gear is preferable. That is a 4" wheel in the pics

John I completely reworked both the mains and the nose mounts on your Bronco, I was the person that built it flew it for 4 maybe 5 years and then sold it. When I had it was flown on 2 EFlite Power 110s on 8s. There was a lot of mods done it enhance the looks, I flew it right up to selling it. Really miss the Bird, great flying airplane there are more pics of it on post 110 of this thread you will find pics on page 1 of Bronco #1 powered with Thunder Tiger Pro 120s, later changed out to the EFlites, had a Lock Out on a DX7 and lost it. Yours is #2, kept all the templates on the gear mounts and built in the same ones in the one you now have. Enjoy....Don

Mine wouldn't steer with the servo in the back. I had to mount mine up front. I also lenghten the steering arms.

Made some sidewinder missles for it a couple weeks ago and added a drop tank.

I hope to change out the pilots for some more "scale" looking ones. Already have one just waiting for them to get back in stock to get the other one.

John, hows it going with yours?

Hey Don. I guess this plane is destined to be hacked on for 9 lives. Knock wood. I wish it was still set up for e-power. It may change back if I can't get the motors tuned to my liking.

I reviewed my intentions for it back on #118. The mains have already been back to CJM - someone had sawn or ground one of the mounting bosses off. I get the feeling I rescued it from certain demise - since the previous owner claims to have flown it, though 5 of the 6 wing pins were loose enough to pull out by hand and the control horn on the elevator was anchored about as stout as I would for a gentle lady glider.

I'm partial to the 3 tone USMC lizard style 1980's camo and will be painting that up once I get her flown a few times and fix up the rash. Oh, yeah. I have the D-nose on the way from fibertech.

A new nose? no. But I will be converting mine to the long nose, probably after the new year. I could forward you the nose I remove if you don't find something else. You also might try Bob's Hobby in Orlando. They used to be a dealer and claimed to have a good number of spares for this plane.

I really thought I'd have it flying long ago, but life gets in the way. May be able to mate the cockpit to the wing and get the engines running this weekend.

Did you scratch build the sindewinder? What about the fuel tank?

Hey John, Yes I built the sidewinders with 3/4 dowls and 1/64 ply for the fins. (18" long)

As for the fuel tank, I used a 32 oz in the center of the wing. I work pretty good. 32ozs on two DLE-20s if a lot of flying time. Let me know if you want pix of the tank install.
