757jonp - Would that be these? on Valley View RC dot com - \ Accessories \ Canister Mufflers \ Canister Muffler (23cc-26cc CRRC Pro, Zenoah, DLE-30cc)

How do you modify the header to fit the DLE 20?

That's the one.

The DLE bolt spacing is slightly narrower, so I used a round file to slot the holes slightly, then used a flat file to provide clearance for the bolt head. You want to be careful that you get it modified in such a manner that the bolts will thread in straight.

There seems to be plenty of "meat" to play with on the flange.

I used mine on a "slab", so it was easy to mount the can alongside the fuse. You're probably in for some adventures mounting it in a normal inverted engine/normal fuse type of plane.

As I stated before the clamps for the teflon tube suck, the can clamps however are fine.

I will try a 4.8v battery only for EI. I hope it solve the problem and i'll post here the results.

microdon2,

To break in the engine basically I ran the first tank at factory settings in the 2000-3000 rpm range. The second tank I set the high and low needle to the richest point before the rpm drop for being too rich. I have been testing these settings this weekend and that's why I though something else was wrong. I'm moving the needle very slowly and I can hear and follow the RPM changing because I have the tachometer installed in the cockpit. I can't use a prop larger than 15" due to ground clearance. I think XOAR have a 15x10 prop that I can use.

I am using MOTUL 800 at 30:1 ratio and the spark plug is the NGK CM-6.

Well I think I already have a lot of things to try. Thanks everybody for the help!

I ordered today a 15x11 carbon 2-blade prop from www.engelmt.com. This is the best 15" prop I could find fro this engine. Does anyone ever tried it?

I will try to mod my Seagull Super Tucano tricycle landing gear to use 16" props.

As for the engine problem I was talking in mas last posts, I will test the 4.8v batt in the EI tomorow.

I have a KMP P-38 that also has limited prop clearance. I used APC 14-13 props. The DLE 20's swing them at a little over 8100 rpm.

I have replaced the 6.0v NIMH for a 4.8v NIMH battery and the problem gone!! Thanks guys! I was never thought that this was the problem.

Now I am getting 7450rpm from a APC 15x12 prop. I now this is a bit too much of prop pitch for this engine, but the RPM are a little low right?

I use J'tec compact wrap around pitts muffler. Will I get more power if I change to the stock muffler? I need speed, the plane is a Super Tucano.

I have 2 gallons of flight.

I spin a Xoar 16X8 @ 8100RPM. I had an APC 15X10 at 7700. Check your high end setting

I tested with the stock muffler and lost 110rpm. I'm going back to the compact pitts muffler and will try again the 15x10.

I'm working a lot on my hi end setting, turning the needle from 1/8 to 1/16 turns, and I can see the tachometer vary in 10rpm steps.

I finally put the maiden flight on my KMP P-38 today. The DLE 20's ran flawlessly. Tom Denney of ValleyView came out to watch and was smiling as much as I was after I landed. With the APC 14-13 props, this thing flies FAST effortlessly. Slowing down takes a lot of time, even with full flaps and the gear down. At a little over 18 lbs. it is grossly overpowered, but with 50+ oz./sq.ft. wing loading, I'm not complaining. This airplane is going to be a LOT of fun this summer!

Kerwin, have not run an 18-6 prop on this engine. I'm running one on an SPE 26, turns about 7,400 rpm. I think it would be a little much on the DLE 20. I'm running a 16-8 Master Airscrew two blade on a DLE 20 in a Top Flight 60 size Mustang. It turns 8,600 rpm static. Plenty of power. A Master Airscrew 16-8 three blade turns between 7,800 and 8,000 rpm, depending on the muffler. A Graupner 15-8 three blade turns 8,500 rpm.

Default RE: NEW DLE 20cc Gasser! (Data & Links 1st Post)

hey guys I need some advice...

I bought a ESM BF110 second hand with twin DLE20's. I maiden'd the plane today and it was out of this world exciting. The plane has flown for 5 flights now (3 with the previous owner and 2, today, with me) with 13X8X3 MA props spinning at 10,500 to 11,000 RPM.

is that too high a RPM? I've been flying DLE20's in other planes with 16X8X2, 17X8X2 Xoar Props at around 8000 to 8500 RPM... with the 13X8s I'm 2000 to 2500 RPM faster...

Will the engine fail at that high rev? what would fail?

thanks in advance

13x8 prop is not listed in the prop range in my user manual. Personally, I would not use a prop that spins above 9000 rpm. The parts inside the engine may not be of the highest quality standards (hence the low price range) and you are risking a major failure. But it's your engine, do as you please.

I have read that at those rpm's the lower rod bearings can fail.

I think it's beyond "can" fail, and closer to "will" fail? Something in the bottom end will let go. Makes no difference what....

Bet it sounds great though!!

A couple of years ago the rod bearing on my DLE 20 failed - there seemed to be a rash of similar failures at the time. Haven't heard much about it since - maybe a bad batch?

That said I'd be wary of moving north of the mfg's suggested max rpm.

How about going to a 14X9. Think that's enough to load up the engine?

Agreed - 16x8 or a 15x10 - both good props for this engine.

Sorry... I was asking if the 14X9 3-blade would be better than the 13X8 3-blade... 16X8 2Blade Xoar on my other warbirds for sure.. but this plance doesn't have the clearance (HIGH AOA on take off and landings)

You might be able to get by with a 14 X 9 three blade? Watch you max rpms.  Too high on the rpms, you risk loosing the rod.

I run MAS 16x8x3 at 7,300 RPM, that;s good enough on a CMP Bf-109 because its quite light and sleek airframe.
15x8x3 at 8,200 should be good for the Bf-110, don't know about the 14x9x3, test it and post results
