Joey,
I have used the Top Notch kit on a BUSA 1/4 scale and the kit is excellent. I used a Fiberglass Specialties cowl made for this kit and was pleased with the quality.

I wish I had gone that route.  I bought the cowl with the molded in engine, it's no where near as good.  Live and learn......

Question guys I have a BUSA 1/4 cub kit that I will most likely change in to a P-18 for a next winter build and collecting bits, I have some books on the cub but nothing that shows a fire wall profile.

so does any one have one they would share or can you point me to the info. Thanks in advance.

Please Pm me

The PA-12 and PA-18 have same firewall profile. I could be wrong. Paul Matt 3-views show a PA-12. I have cowls for 1/6 PA-12.

Extra! Extra! Piper J-2 (not J-3) pics coming soon so stay tuned!

Arup

I have the 1/4 super cub cowl from Fiberglass Specilites but there is no info on the over lap or if it is a but joint, that is why I am looking for a flat patten of the fire wall, and if I cant find the tail fethers shapes I will fake them free hand from pic's and such.

The cowls fit flush on top but expand on the sides to allow for cooling air to pass. There is even a cooling 'ramp' undercut into the fuselage bottom of the PA-12 (and probably the PA-18, too). The cowl opposite has a 'lip' or flanged edge there to help pull air out of cowl.

I got ya one of our club members has a full size on so I my try to go get some pic's of his. also in the books I have are some good three views for the tailfethers so I can wing them, my bigest problem is the fire wall, I have checked a few web sites, I have a frind who is a member of EAA so may see if he can get a pic of the fire wall and scale it in a printer. But this is planned for next winter build so I still have time to see what I can find.

Joey B You can go to Top notch and buy a kit from them for the dummy engine, They look to be cut from my plans that I have for free on my site.

Looking for someone whou has a set of 1/3 scale super cub plans from balsa USA> need to look at the firewall area. still woking on my set, but need to see the firewall for some cowl sizing....

Yesterday we finally got a nice enough day to fly the Cub so I was out and must have done 40 landings with it. The 14 & 3/4ths long shock cords work very well - they are stiff enough at that length to keep the gear up but will give if needed so I'm gonna leave them at that length and see if I can fly the dickens outta this nice model this season. The G-26 powers it very scale-like and makes the model a lot of fun to fly. Now you know what I know about using shock cord on the Dave Patrick Super Cub. Have a good one! [8D]

Hi Cub Man and all you Brethren! Here is my Goldberg Cub converted to Taylor J-2 Cub in the 'bones'! You folks are the first to see these pics. I started this thing over 10 years ago and it got put on back burner for other projects. The spars were cut in half and shear webbing placed 'I' beam style. Struts and jury struts fabricated. Barn door ailerons, riblets and capstrips used in lieu of kit construction methods. New cabin area ply fashioned and operable doors installed. Tail feathers made more scale and constructed with laminated outlines. LG modified for strength. Polyester glass laid up inside the ABS cowl for durability. Elevator pushrod stays inside fuse. Rudder is pull-pull. It'll get Koverall, nitrate and silver butyrate with dark blue 'N' numbers and trim.

Hey ARUP,
Looking real good. What is the wing span and how much do you think she will weigh when you get done with her? What power plant are you going to install? Hope to see more pics when you are done with her.

Thanks R.L. and Pete! It is the standard GB Cub wingspan of ~76". I'm hoping to have just over 6lbs weight and power will be an O.S. 40 four stroke. I'm going to build a SIG version of a Taylor E-2 and power it with a 26 four stroke. A J-4 Cub Coupe will be after that. One nice thing of these E-2 and J-2 'Cubs' is that they have some different color schemes and you don't have to deal with the fuse/fin fillet of fabric.

Hey ARUP, the cub is looking sweet. As far as the OS 40 goes, you may or may not like it. Kind of under powered. I have the SIG 1/6 scale cub with a saito 40 and it barely gets off on grass. I will be putting the saito 56 on it soon, especially before I even attempt a take off on floats. There's no way it will fly with the added weight of the floats. I don't remember the exact specs of mine, but I think it's similar to yours as far as wing span and weight. It does fly pretty scale though. Good luck with it and take some video of the maiden if you can. Steve.

Hi Steve, thanks for your comments! I appreciate them very much! I really like to 'work' an airplane into the air. That is why I'm going the 'low power' route. You will love float flying if you've never done it before. I had a GB Cub with a Supre Tigre 61 on floats and it was a blast. It was over powered but it flew just fine. I think I've had four Cubs previous to the current two being built. I built a bunch of Nosen Champs. I like the Champ but since this is a Cub forum...

We use to fly them with 40 four strokes on them back in the 80's, flew them fine. These days I like
the 56 four stroke on the long wing and 70's on the clipped-wing.

well, if you like to have to work to get hert in the air then youll love it. but you already know that. yeah, ive had a couple of champs as well, they fly ust like the cubs do. if it werent for the fact that im just dying to fly off of water i would keep it because i love the way it flies so scale like. Im hoping its not too much more with the 56 and floats. a guy at the field has a used 56 for a good price and the floats just need one more coat of paint and a couple of coats of clear and shell be ready. Im hoping to post some video of my first float fly experience . I cant wait. thanks. Steve. P.S., ill post vids weather it goes good or bad. if bad, maybe someone can spot something wrong. but it wont come to that. i hope. Ive spent hours reading up on setting up float planes.

I picked up a SIG 1/5 scale cub kit for my next build. I will be using a Saito 90 twin for power. I’m going to build the full wing version in a military scheme of olive drab with invasion strips. I got the kit off Craigslist for $120 but the windshield and cowl are damaged and need to be replaced. SIG has the windshield and I think I’m going to get a cowl from Fiberglass Specialties.
Does anyone have any do’s or don’t suggestion for this kit? One I heard of is to not cut the wing tube.

Is this a new GB cub kit? I know you said you had changed it from the J-3. I just ask becaus I have built a few of the older kits, and see the cat strips and the ailerons are built up.

Hi Cub Man- this is an old Carl Goldberg kit. The ribs were cut down to receive the cap strips and I didn't use the sheeting topsides at TE as per kit instructions. I built up the barn door ailerons in lieu of kit tapered stock. This necessitated changing the rear spar depth at the ailerons' location. Not shown in the photos are the cabin window changes. I'm currently making vacuum forming molds for them. The landing gear is getting finished up, too. I'm going to start covering this week, I hope. Pulling a cowl from the ABS one works a treat and is really smooth. Stands to reason since the molds used were better than the finished kit item.

No reason not to cut the wingtube. My Cub is built stock minus the landing gear, the aluminum struts, and the electric conversion. The gear was changed to Robart, which requires the addition of a modified gear plate (The Robart are the same width as the fuse but shorter front to back than the stock gear.)

I probably have 300+ flights on mine. I have flown lots of Cubs over the years and the Sig 1/5th is probably one of the best flyers. It builds and flys light.

Remember, the struts are functional so there is absolutely no need for the wing tube to cross over the fuselage. It adds no strength to the wing. If the struts fail a one piece wing tube will not stop the wings from folding.

Here are a few photos of mine.

SunDevilPilot,
Thanks for the information. Is the Robart gear worth getting? What is your plane covered with?

I put Robart Gear on mine and although expensive it is worth it in my opinion..I used to have troubles with take off.. It did not track well for me .. With Cubs you need everything going for you that you can have going for you.. The Robart gear works great..I guess it depends how much you like the plane.. If you really like it then it is probably worth the upgrade...

Covered in Natural Solartex and painted with Nelson Paint.

Robart gear is definitely worth it.
