Default Looking for builds that show Carbon rods driving multiple flaps?

Over the years I have seen photos of guys running carbon fiber rods through the wings to run multiple flaps with a single servo. If I remember correctly they epoxied on multiple control horns through out the length to control the individual flaps. I am hoping some of you guys may have a link to some of these builds, or have done it yourself and post some photos. Just trying to not reinvent the wheel!!!.

Thanks
Mike

Mike,

One thought, I tried to use carbon rods as torque tubes to run my N28 ailerons and found that carbon tubes allowed too much twist. I had to go to aluminum arrow shafts which worked great. You could then Hysol G10 control horns on the ail arrows haft and it should work fine.

Whit,
Great idea thanks! Should the arrow shaft be supported with bushings at both ends?

Why? servos today are so inexpensive and its so much easier to electronically adjust them with your radio or a device like a servo match box and not deal with any of the mechanical adjustments.

I did use bushings at both ends, you can see on my BUSA N28 thread on RCSB. A friend machined bushings for me and neat joiners that allowed the wings to decouple easily.

Using multiple servos can work also, the trade offs are weight and cost vs easier setup. SmartFly makes units like matchboxes called Equalizers for this exact purpose.

Mike, what you are advocating is perfectly doable as with my Sea Fury flaps, it has six and are all driven from servos mounted in the center section.

FW190,
I am working on an S2-Tracker and the rib profile is to thin to mount mini aileron servos in the wing. So, I am hoping to mount them closer to the center section. Also, I have Four split flaps and a common shaft, at least for two sets, would save some weight in servos. I know I can use match box's and my radio is capable of ganging four flap servos. Just trying to eliminate some hardware. Then again, I suppose one most weigh out all the arrow shafts and support bushings.

Here one of my vids showing the carbon fiber rods in my Fliteskin 109F. If I was to do it all over again, I would either use aluminum or brass to keep down the amount twist induced when operating. The torque rod you see drives an upper and lower inner flap. The main flap. And 2 rods to push out the leading-edge slats for a total of five connections on each wing. It's a little spongy at full deflection, but I think it'll work out fine. I do believe it would've work better using aluminum or brass.

There are links to the build in the description.

Mike,
I agree with Casey, brass tubes are best to build the torque rods, the weight difference is minimal and there is no twist. I've been using a single servo to drive 2, 4 flaps and 4 flaps and 2 slats for many years now and once you set them up, they always work. Also you don't run the risk of having a partial flap deflection. (Full size airplanes uses the same principle) so it's not really about saving money on servos, but design integrity. (you will save money in servos anyways)

The brass tube is drilled at any location and control horns are built with 4-4- or 2-56 threaded rods and Dubro Adjustable Horn Brackets . This allows the throw to be changed individually for each flap as well.

I hope this helps.
