Default RE: DW Foamies On Axis

Flew it this morning and it all worked well. Brand new batteries so I didn't test vertical but it climbs well at 1/2 throttle so I believe it will work going straight up. Tried the battery full forward and think it's a bit nose heavy, so I estimate proper CG will be about 1/2 way between the 2 wing spars.

It has a lot of coupling on knife edge, but it also flies really slow, which is great in general but especially so as the ballfield where I will be flying this plane on the way to work in the morning has a small/obstructed landing area!

On the downside, granted I'm not used to foamies, with the battery on one side (left) it needed gobs of R aileron trim to fly straight & level and I think this may lead to issues on vertical maneuvers. Any suggestions?

Thanks,

Bill

Bill - Dale and I were fortunate to have Tony Frackowiak help us with some trimming the other day. This was one of the first items he addressed. Mine took 36 cents on the right wingtip to offset the battery weight. After Tony trimmed it out the plane really fly's great. It actually is a foamie that you can practice pattern maneuvers with.

Have fun!

I put 14 g of weight on mine....$.50 worth? LOL

Inow have a Rimfire .15 motor, turning a 12x6 prop, has gobs of power. just need more battery for a complete sequence. I just ordered some 33oomAh batteries form Dinogy.

Bordering on sacrilege!!! You can't fly pattern with anything less than a 2M plane with a BelchFire Turbo 180 or a PowerPlant Eco 7. What, no composites, carbon fiber, or mega $$$ servos? Say it isn't so, Surefire..... ;-)

I think we'll have to change Jon's name from Surefire to Misfire

Jon, I don't remember. Was that a quarter, two nickels and a penny? Or was it 7 nickels and a penny? Or a quarter, two dimes and a penny? The possibilities!

Put .35 on my wing today. Flew perfect. You have to use a 2012 quarter as it makes it fly better.

My .02 keep the change.

With standard time back I have time at the park in the morning for a few flights with the On-Axis before work.

What thrus angles are you using? I'm at 0 - 0 and so I am carrying some right trim which causes problems when inverted.

Thanks,
Bill

Does everyone still like their On-Axis? I'm looking for something along these lines and wonder if it just flies like a typical bigger foamie or something better.

I got my On-Axis in the summer and didn't fly it much until the past couple of weeks. I've got it pretty dialed in and I like it a lot. The only thing I have to compare it to is the Multiplex Acromaster, and it's definitely optimized for pattern compared to that plane.

In the end I went with a 3300 mAh battery and had to reinforce the LG to avoid prop strikes, but all systems are go now.

After 160 flights on with my On Axis I had a control failure of some sort on a vertical downline with devastating results (see photo).

I was using a small Spektrum RX with my Spektrum DX8, Castle Phoenix 54 ESC. I had full control as I pulled up into the stall turn 1/2 way thru my 3300 mAh pack (plenty of juice left in batt). I went to pull out and nothing there, cycled the throttle stick a couple times to re-arm the esc in case of low voltage cut-off to no avail.

A similar glitch happened once before but cycling the throttle did the trick and I was much higher when I noticed the lack of control, and I recovered. I have experienced not other control anomalies in over 17 hr of airtime with this set-up.

Can anyone help with what the most likely failure point could have been? I really want to get another one of these because it works great as a work break 3 mins. from the office, but would feel better if I could eliminate a potential cause of a future wreck.

Thanks, Bill
