Wassup fellas! So I was wondering if I could get some opinions regarding the new Top-Flite giant scale Spitfire. The only thing that bugs me about it is the way the cowl looks (and I know a lot of companies have difficulty with scale cowls in general) but that's really it. What d'ya guys think?

Thanks in advance

-Spence

Hi Spence,

In the grand scheme of things only you can decide whether the TF Spit is to your satisfaction or not. I myself will have to pass as TF has taken too many liberties with the outline to suit me. For sure I'm in the minority though as one of those "purists". However I will say that, having owned and flown several similar size Spitfires, there is no reason why an accurately proportioned Spitfire model can't be made to fly very well. But I realize that TF is aiming more for the sport flyers than they are for guys like myself. Personally I would go for the 1/5 scale ESM model before I would buy this one.

Here are a few of the things I see about the TF Spit that turn me off:

1. Dihedral has been reduced
2. Stab size has been increased (substantially I might add)
3. Nose has been lengthened
4. Cockpit a bit too far forward in relation to the wing (Done, I'm guessing, to make the longer nose less noticeable)
5. Landing gear are spaced wider than scale
6. Wing is substantially too "fat" at the tips
7. As you noted, the fit of the cowl is awful.
8. The color scheme is wrong for a Mk.IX

Here is a great build Thread we are doing on an electric Yellow P-38 with massive sound system. Also has videos of the benedini system on Corsair and P-40. SonicBoomRC.com is getting ready to launch the new Benedini systems in the US and they are doing it cheap. Less than half the cost of the AeroSoundRC prices.

albsurfer;
What a great story!!! The look on the pilot face was priceless!!! I am glad theses guys took the time to find some of these people and let them see part of their pass. The best part to this story would be to find that plane and let him see it again. I know that would make his day, but just looking at him just looking at the move, you could see just how much love he had for that plane.
Thanks again for the link.
All brothers need to see this!!!

Sonny,
YEAH!!! It was definitely one of the best war reunites I've ever heard of. Some of the bomber pilots & crews get tears when they find their old plane in the boneyard at Davis Monthan, AZ.
To live through a minimum of 25 missions at the beginning of the war with a life expectancy of only as little as 2 weeks... then you find out your plane, the one that saved your life, is still around. But.. in this case still able to fly... Towards the end of the war fighter & bomber crews were expected to do as many as 35 missions.
British fighter pilots had a low life expectancy and greater chance of doing 35-50 missions because of losses and a lack of pilot source numbers.

Steve,

I received my Spitfire Brotherhood cap yesterday.  I love it.
Wore it at the field yesterday evening and flew my spit.
Thanks OldScaleGuy.
On the good news, I solved the nose over problem on take off by bending the tail gear up bringing the nose of  the plane
up and applying more up elevator .  Three take offs and no nose over tendencies.
On the bad, 3rd landing she ballooned up and tip stalled doing a cart wheel.
The right wing tip block cracked and the two wing fasteners tore out of the fuselage.
I am quite sure that I can repair it and call it sortie action damage.

Andreas
Happy building & flying.

Great Video and Story. I have a friend who passed away last year named Truman Smith who also flew 35 missions in B-17s.
If you ever get the chance to read "The Wrong Stuff", that is his book.
