GS Warbirds Servos selection

RE: GS Warbirds Servos selection
I'll second the 645 or 5645s as choices for that size warbird. I use them all the time, one per control surface. A key thing is there's not a lot of deflection needed on control surfaces for a warbird moving at 100 plus mph reducing the load on the servo.

Not to start a servo war here, but I have had too many problems with Hitec servos lately. The pots go bad, one of the motors froze up in mid-air (imagine how that turned out) and the gears become really sloppy.
I have switched to Airtronics and have been very happy I did.

We have been using Futaba 3050 servos in 1/5 scale warbirds. They work great, just make sure that you have a very good Mechanical Advantage on your linkages. If you use a servo torque calculator so will find that the requirement for torque is not that high.

I do agree that most servos in the 90-100oz torque range will be plenty for the 50cc class birds, and I have plenty of experience with the 50cc stuff. But getting into the 40 lbs, 100"ws 85cc class is new for me with only 3 planes experience. I noticed that a lot of you diehard warbird nuts are married to the old Hitec 645's and I agree they work great. I cannot say the same for the digital Hitec 5645 with their famous centering issues, seen it 3 times now in our club. I guess 645 will do for now until more people have experience with reliable digital ones in the 35-45 bucks range. It's hard to beat the 645 specs/pricing ratio.

To each their own I guess. I believe you are taking a risk with unproven power hd. They are very cheap (price alone I can't attest for quality), which I believe you get what you pay for. Hitec servos have a proven track record for years of using quality components whereas power hd is relatively new. I haven't experimented with power hd, but would like to see the quality of their motors and materials throughout. I have been trying to decide on which servo for my warbirds and have been looking at the 645's and the 5685 which are metal gear high voltage. For an airplane with 10 servo's you will spend $200 more for servo's alone. If anything, I buy piece of mind and don't mind the difference. I have been eyeing power hd's for the flaps. I'm not trying to burn p-hd at all, I am actually considering them in I non-critical areas. I would like to hear reviews and see some pics of the servos.

Let's get a vote/survey of how many gasser warbird guys have had the conversion from Hitec 645 over to Power HD 1501 or something else. Let's count only ones willing to put them on elevators and ailerons (critical locations). I will try the 1501's myself on may be 50cc stuff to start. Looks like they have the speed and power for 3D 50cc birds. Are these these same ones from HobyKing?
