RE: Ross Engines
I am quite partial to that Ross flat six engine myself. I actually wonder if anyone actually used the engines in a airplane. I think the vast majority of the engines sold to modellers, even way back in the 1970's and 80's probably all wound up being displayed and not used.
They have a bit of a story about the engines that Lou Ross made here http://modelenginenews.org/drj/ross4.html
There are several varieties of the flat twin. I have seen rear exhaust and side exhast versions of that engine, and having the carb towards the rear and in the middle too.

RE: Ross Engines
If i remember from the old Clarence Lee articles the singles ran well but were not powerful; so the pattern people were not interested, which ruled the day. When Robertson got the company, he wrote Lee saying he had spares but no new engines would be made; I guess when no one wanted spares he put the others together. I think he was hoping to protect his multi cylinder collection value when he bought the company. I also remember a twin was used in a Pober Pixie in Model Aviation by Wisher and he noted that the twin looked cool in the cowl but had the power of a .40 single.

Earlwb,
Nice photos, are these part of your collection. I always wondered what exhaust system would be use on the multi-cylinder engines.
Those exhaust stacks look kind of small, where they actually used or just for display? The 61 I posted is for sell (280 euro/$362) on
ebay.de, there were a couple others there also.
TFF,
I never read the review or use one but I always thought because of it design, that the Ross 61 might have been in the same power
range as the K&B and Super Tigre blue head PDP engines. I agree, back in the day when the 61 engine was king, the pattern guys
were the makers or breakers. Lots of guys flew or tried to fly pattern, I've never heard of Ross being used. Maybe it was good sports
engine.

Back in the 1970's mufflers weren't used all that much and the mufflers one could get weren't very good anyway. Ross baically just used exhaust stacks to get the exhaust out away from the airplane. There were some nice cast muffler adapters made for the twins and quad engines. I would have liked to known who made the cast twin in cowl muffler though.

That red head .61 has a K&B carb on it...is that what they came with in the later versions? I haven't looked in a while, and don't recall right off hand, but were they or are they currently sold by mecoa? (that might explain the K&B carb )
I have a very early one with natural Alum. case (sand cast )...black head, prop driver and backplate...and a Perry carb...all original.

RE: Ross Engines
It is difficult to say what carb was the standard used on the engines. Ross used Kavan, and Perry carburetors on the engines. I am not sure about K&B carbs though but he could have used them too. I don't think that is a K&B carb on the Ross .60 Red Head though, it looks more like a Kavan carb to me.

RE: Ross Engines
Definitely a K&B carb...looks identical to the carbs on the 7.5 Marine (outboard ) K&B engines on my friends boats...but most likely has a smaller throttle bore.
Edit: Just stumbled across this...

RE: Ross Engines
I owned a Ross twin prototype engine for a few years that used K&B 40 pistons so the twin was an 80 . It used a Perry carb. I like most buyers never ran it but looked at it fondly for a few years till it was time for it to move on. It was natural aluminum, no black paint.

Proptop,
I have the same engine as you with the Perry carb. Maybe the K&B card was used on the black 61 only.

Strangely, just a couple of days ago I added the [link=http://sceptreflight.net/Model%20Engine%20Tests/Ross%201.20%20Flat%204.html]Ross flat 4[/link] to the list .

Hey you think that's strange, checkout post # - 9. It's not like one of these are being put up on Ebay every few months. But a few days later after my post, there it is
a black Ross 61
