I put it in my watch list, may bid on it later, still has 9 days.
Isn't funny how some people say "no reserve" and then start the auction at $XX.XX. To me, that's a reserve price.

Here is my .60 sized ultrasport I mentioned earlier. It hasn't flown in ~10 years... I've got the radio back in it and am just waiting on delivery of a new motor and hope to be flying it again in a week or so.

My memories of this plane were it took off fast... flew fast.. and landed fast. Never was able to slow it down, that was with a .91 FS in the front. I'm putting a .90 2 stroke in it this time... I imagine my results will be similar :-)

Yep, I'm thinking the same, maybe even a little faster. I've got a Saito 1.00 in mine and it slows down nice for landing. It's got the Minnflyer flaps but I never use them. I'm thinking you may have had the CG a little to heavy to the nose.

You may want to consider on moving the CG all the way back of the range that will help a lot to slow the plane down on landing and you still have a fast plane if you want it to be fast. The picture of the plane that i posted is a Tower Hobbies Kaos 60 which it is a Ultra Sport on the inside anyway I have the CG on the very back end of the range so give it a try and let us know what you got.

will do.... with the 4 stroke .91 we had to add tail weight to get the balance into the acceptable range.. so if you were to say "I think your plane was nose heavy" would have me responding... likely! It was a big engine in that long nose. It would snap roll with the engine torque.. wouldn't against the torque at all.. I liked the plane well enough but never truly fell in love with it... this is round 2 with a different motor ( 15GX evolution ) and we'll see how it goes.

It sure was fast to land... I could come in hitting the start of the run way level flight at 2-3' off the ground and cut the engine and completely overshoot the other end... which was at least 600feet long 2 footbal fields ....plane held speed forever.... it was fun in its own way... My father was always in awe that I could land it at all at those speeds...

It is a clean airframe. Add retracts and it gets even faster. Mine does slow down, eventualy. I have to start my landing approach about 1000' out. The performance with the 1.00 is awsome, I just love the way this plane flys. It's my second US 60 and I've had a US 40+ that flew just as nice. This is one of my favorite planes. There are two pattern flyers in my club and both of them love this plane.

My .60 US has a Fitzpatrick .60 in it and is a great flyer. My giant US was built from RCM plans,( before the kit came out) a very enjoyable project, it did have a 1.2 four stroke, in process of putting a Saito 1.5 in it. I also have a .40 a.60 kits in the stack. Joe

Hi Guys,

I am well on my way building my first US40 cloned(doing 2) from the kit I purchased from the LHS and need to start thinking about the canopy. I asked our LHS to order me one in but it never seems to come in.

Is there any handy "jug of wonder juice" that anyone has found that will suffice? Or do I have to make a plug and build a vacuum former?

Some nice looking UltraSports in this thread, I only hope mine will come close. I am going tail dragger with the landing gear all on the fuse, it does cause me to land 3 or 4 times(bounce) but I like the fact that my fuse does not rest on the horizontal stab while in transport.

How is the roll response with the Minnflyer flap modification? I bought an UltraSport 60 kit from Tower and at the same time ordered retracts for it too. I'm tempted to push the canopy back a bit to give it that more of a modern look, but there again the classic look is nice with a good color scheme.

I really wish that the UltraSport 1000 kits were still available...

tschuy, roll response is about the same I guess, when I did the flap mod I also set up a radio mixing so that way I still have full span aileron and then when I flip the switch the flaps come down but I don't know what the aileron response is like without the flap part not working.

For the ultra sport 40, use the ultra sport 60 canopy. I have both and you can cut the 60 down to fit the 40. I've done it on mine and another at our field. I bought mine off e-bay.

Thank you Robert...

Mixing of the flaps with the ailerons would be an option. Just add an addition servo (one servo per flap) and trigger the mixing in the radio... What are the other options to add drag during the approach for landing and keep from having a long flat approach. I've understood that if you work the CG towards the rear of the recommended range it helps to slow the landing approach.

Going with an OS .65 AX with a tuned pipe.

Cheers,

I put retracts in my Ultra Sport and I would not do it again.. I have nothing but trouble with them.. They are constantly bending no matter how softly I land.. I am on a rough grass field though...Not real rough.. Just bumpy.. It is a lot of extra work and a lot of extra weight..I am thinking about making another wing without retracts .. The Flaps are fun to play around with ..

Yes, I am looking forward to using the flaps I am building into mine, and like you have had bad luck with retracts on a grass field. I do prefer to fly off of grass tough, allot easier on the muffler on the nose overs

I also put retracts in my Ultra Sport and like Bikerbc would not do it again. I have not flown my plane yet but they were just too much work.

As far as flaps. Before mine crashed due to an elevator servo failure a couple of years ago, (yep, it really wasn't pilot error this time)
I had built my 60 with flaps and retracts. All worked perfectly. I used the Minnflyer retracts, I'm not sure you can get them anymore but they were great.
My first flight, as soon as I got it trimmed out I used the flaps. They add no adverse characteristics to the flight at all that I could tell. I also used full flaps with my first landing.
Of course you Don't need flaps, It flies great without them. But for that added touch they are fun. As far as speed, it is a fast airplane, but landing was no problem. I have a Revolver 60 that lands about twice as fast as the UltraSport did.
I still have a Ultra 60 kit under my work bench. I may get it out and start some day. I'm actually considering putting electric on it.

retracts are not to be used on a grass runway and if they runway in question is not smooth you are going to get bent or ruined retracts and struts.

I repeat, I had no problem with my retracts, and I have had more than one plane with retracts. You can't make a blanket statement like that as not everyone experiences the same problems or conditions as you may have experienced. If that were the case then no one would use retracts. It's still a personal preference.
That would be like saying every biplane is going to crash because the one biplane I built, crashed.
